GOP wants America First, but we are already nearly America Last

BLOG POST March 18, 2023 updated March 27, 2023. One of the themes coming from the right is that America is on its way to being a third-world country. If by implying we are becoming more black and brown than White,  I fear that is an anti-immigrant/ racist dog whistle.  However, when it comes to the nuts and bolts of just raising families and living a long time, we are almost there, and the GOP just wants to make sure we are America Last.

The US is already one of the worst-ranked countries for infant/maternal mortality

rates and life expectancies. The GOP is so fixated on ending Roe v Wade

because they believe in "life"

, they must think caring about life ends at childbirth. as they try to slash services

for the poor and middle class.

."The U.S. had a higher infant mortality rate and lower life expectancy than most other OECD member countries. Even top U.S. states ranked poorly among member countries for the infant mortality and life expectancy measures, despite the U.S. having the highest total health spending of all OECD countries.  What we are already hearing from the GOP right," so if we cannot touch Medicare and Social Security, then we will cut all of the other social programs. that serve the poor and the diverse. " The problem is those programs also serve their White constituency as well. including Obamacare ACA (5.3 million enrollees are White, 1.3 are African-American), food stamps (37% of users, the largest demographic, are White and 26% percent are African-American), Medicaid (39.5% of users are white while 19% are African-American), school lunch programs (no data per race available), and a set of benefits to women including choice (about half of the states do not protect, are hostile, or outlaw women's access to abortion). The irony is that 8 of the top ten states getting more in federal funds than they contribute to the US treasury are Republican or divided government dominated. . States Most Dependent on the Federal Government - 2022 Edition - SmartAsset

We will also see the attempt to pass a federal abortion ban. The states most likely to harm women are those that already have the worst levels of infant and child mortality in the US and who have already banned abortion (court challenges pending in most of them) Of the states with the ten highest infant mortality rates, 8 are states dominated by Republicans or a divided government. Stats of the States - Infant Mortality (cdc.gov) in 2020. In 2023, 9 of the top 10 states with high maternal deaths are also in states governed by Republicans or divided government. Maternal Mortality Rate by State 2023 (worldpopulationreview.com). 6 of the 50 states with high maternal death rates are among the ones that have banned or nearly banned abortions, though three of those are being challenged in the courts. Six Months Post-Roe, 24 US States Have Banned Abortion or Are Likely to Do So: A Roundup | Guttmacher Institute

Update: 3/22/23

This happened in one of the most conservative states in the union. It has implications for the Texas abortion law which sparked a suit against their extreme ban so poorly worded that doctors fearing going to jail for performing abortions refused to take action to save the life of mothers who nearly died.. The US has one of the worst rates of maternal and infant death in the industrialized world already. The new extreme abortion bans will only make our outcomes worse unless courts intervene as they did in Oklahoma, ruling in striking down a law criminalizing abortions, and permitting abortions if the pregnancy is threatening the life of the mother. The US ranks near bottom in maternal and infant mortality rates
