Three ways to hold politicians accountable: two failed in the 1940s; jury is out in 2023

Update 1/9/23

Another reason to seek accountability for January 6.  The US has exported the template for others to destroy democracy and replace it with fascism.  The best antidote: prosecution of the January 6 insurgents and defeat of the elected officials at the next election to demonstrate such copy cats are a road to failure, not  a ticket for success.   Bolsonaro supporters invade government buildings in Brazil | The Independent

There are three ways to hold politicians accountable: two failed in the 1940s, but the jury is out in 2023.  I just binge-listened to all of the segments dropped to date in Rachel Maddow's podcast ULTRA.  Clearly, the Nazi and fascist influences in 1940-1944  brazenly shaped US policies and attacked our democratic form of governance as inferior to fascism and authoritarianism. While they were not held accountable by the judicial system, Pearl Harbor resulted in making them much less potent as the greatest generation rallied to defend our country.  The examples in the  Maddow podcast sound disturbingly like what we have been experiencing in the Trump era. Even terminology of the 1940'a  echoes today. After digesting the ULTRA episodes, a conclusion I reached was that accountability is the essence of American democracy, whose continuation depends on faith in an idea instead of an iron fist imposing it.  Faith is a belief that those who govern are accountable to the voters, not to some strong leader. Three ways to hold politicians accountable are internal party discipline, civil and criminal justice, and the ballot box.   Success depends upon the education of and effective communication with the public.

Accountability not only stops the abhorrent activity, but it deters others in the future from trying the same stunts, strategies, and tactics for fear of a harmful backlash. The lessons I  took from the podcast are three ways to hold bad behavior to account, and two out of the three failed in 1940-1944. The sedition trial of 1944 of those accused of Nazi sympathies ended in a farce and the death by heart attack of the judge. When criminal and civil court action failed, and political parties were torn by division, dissension, hatred, antisemitism, corruption, and misplaced loyalties,  the ballot box worked to bring the bad behavior of elected officials to account. Slowly but ultimately, voters became educated about facts and evidence of what happened, and they voted the bad actors out of governance in 1946. Maddow concluded herself: the voters ultimately held the 1940s politicians to account.

If internal party discipline also fails to bring accountability, as Kevin McCarthy's ambitions to become House Speaker caused him to ignore the bad behavior of a new caucus member,  the ballot box is also the ultimate tool in the next election cycle. We are not sure who  AG Merrick Garland will or will not charge and prosecute for a crime committed around the events of January 6. At least, when civil and criminal judicial action fails to hold politicians accountable, the ballot box can.

The key to action at the ballot box is educating the public about what happened in a credible way with evidence and an understandable presentation. That is the service the January 6  hearings provided. The results of the November 2022 midterms serve as evidence that accountability by ballot box is beginning. The value of the January 6 House hearings is that the public became educated about what happened. In the November midterms, voters held a significant number of politicians accountable by voting for someone else or leaving a ballot line unmarked.   It also became clear that Trump's support of many candidates proved to be toxic.  There is nothing worse for politicians than losing elections, other than jail time.

However, if democracy is already so damaged and corrupted,  the ballot box cannot deliver accountability no matter how educated voters become.   So long as America's form of democracy survives, at least voters can do what the judicial system and party peer pressure fail to do to hold those committing bad behavior to account. They can vote freely and fairly. Freedom of speech and press and personal liberties are defined in the Constitutional  Amendments and are protected. The rule of law is both the interpreter and enforcer.  It is the mechanism that makes those protections work. That is why keeping the democratic system we have in America is so very, very important. It permits and protects the rights and abilities of voters to learn what is or was happening. We can learn from our mistakes in the past and not repeat them.

The neo-fascists and neo-Nazis are always lurking within our country and emerge in the publics' eyes when they think they have a chance to improve on the template to grab power, a template that has its roots and formation in the late 1930s and 1940s. The value of the podcast ULTRA is revealing that neo-fascists do not need Hitler or his operatives to inspire them and show them how to do it.  They just copy what they got away with in 1940-1944. down to torch parades, thuggery, violence, antisemitism, white nationalism, and the same vocabulary.   Trump green-lighted them, embracing them as part of his loyal supporters, calling them fine people, exhorting them to come to Washington for a wild time,  as they dressed in khakis and polo shirts and military gear instead of silver, black, or brown shirts and found the support of politicians in the halls of power and in an oval office.

That is also the greatest weakness of fascism and autocracy.  The law to them is what the strong arm says, not what is honored and obeyed in a constitution. Accountability to the people they govern over time is replaced by force and edicts, the autocratic leaders surround themselves with those who only tell them what they want to hear, and the public is only told what the leader wants them to hear. History is rewritten and old books burned or banned so new generations cannot learn from the past. Judgment becomes befuddled by falsehoods and unreality.  Putin's attempted takeover of Ukraine was a disaster and a case in point.  We know how Hitler underestimated the resistance to his territorial grabs and how that turned out.

Accountability can also be abused and can be a risky political strategy.. When accountability becomes a revenge method, and Congressional hearings take the place of legislating solutions, the GOP House members in swing states could be very vulnerable in 2024.  It is a strategy that can backfire, particularly if the GOP   gets hung up on social issues, hurting women, LGBTQ,  and voter rights.  If the GOP tries to call out the January 6 hearings for too much focus on accountability, Democrats can respond that they were able to do both problem-solve and hold hearings with great success when they were in charge. Democrats can charge the GOP with hyping accountability hearings to divert voters' attention from the GOP failure to legislation in a way that benefits their constituents. Democrats can paint the GOP House with a broad brush as the place where good solutions to problems go to die. Taking credit for the gains in 2022 requires dramatization by ribbon cutting and news coverage of stories of people benefitting. The job of Democrats will be to capitalize on this by protecting public policy gains that proved to be popular in 2022 and more so since they will be implemented in the next two years and the results will be seen and felt by voters.  usatoday.com: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2023/01/02/congress-house-gop-biden-democrats-senate/10867027002/

The ULTRA podcast inspired me to do some reflections on why my political views were shaped by both the 1940s and the rise of Trumpism.  My lifetime, being born in 1938, spanned the period and the reincarnation of neo-Nazis.  I am a child of that and much that happened in between.

The ULTRA podcast inspired me to do some personal reflections. Excuse my indulgence, but this answers some questions of why I write what I write in this blog. It is for the record that will interest mostly my family someday when they ask how I got to be me.  I will be 85 in February. Rachel Maddow's podcast is about the bookends of my political thinking life, the 1940s to 2023.  The period ULTRA covered took place in my lifetime, though I remember being politically aware as World War II came to its close. My parents openly and freely discussed their views about politics, and I am sure they shaped mine.  If anything, dad of the Colorado eastern plains and mother of southwestern Missouri with Iowa and Indiana-rooted parents had experiences that shaped them who spent the rest of their life in Jim Crow ultra evangelical Oklahoma, as dad was a transplanted corporate executive with Bell Telephone.  What I remember in my early years post-war II was that Dad hated any extremism, whether it was McCarthy's anticommunist witch hunt or the vestiges of the New Deal that bordered on socialism.  Mother came from a political family with her father as a county judge (elsewhere known as a county commissioner) in the time of the influence of the Pendergast machine of Kansas City, from whence Truman ascended. She detested Truman and, before that, Huey Long  of Louisiana, the corrupt authoritarian governor of the 1930s.  I think she was in revolt against her roots as well. Both of my parents were staunch Presbyterians because they considered their church to be more intellectual, focusing on the basics, than other denominations going off on extreme emotional tangents. Eastern Oklahoma was the bible belt and the prototype of southern culture."To Kill a Mockingbird" described my young life and my neighborhood to a T. Most who had settled in the Muskogee area had their roots in the Southeastern US. The climate and geography were similar to Tennessee, Kentucky, and Appalachia. I was surrounded by those who thought otherwise, and that experience, being culturally disconnected in my youth from those around me, gave me empathy with other minorities,  were they black, native American, Catholic, or Jews. I knew how they must be feeling.  I was cut from a different cloth, and so were they. No wonder my high school years focused on debate and forensics. I could see two sides to many issues.  When I went to Northwestern, a political science major with more hours of study in history, I spent my junior year abroad in post-war Berlin on a Presbyterian-sponsored "exchange" program. I saw firsthand in 1958 how Communism pre-wall brutally consolidated power. My main interest, however, was attempting to discover how in the world educated white people fell for Hitler and fascism. Was it something cultural?  I am still puzzled by that since the Germans I got to know personally and up close were little different than those in eastern Oklahoma, certainly even better educated and better "mannered", who had been through economic hell post World War I and the following world depression. They had grasped the Hitler straw as a way out of chaos and economic pain and found a religion to blame, Jews, for their misery. This could have happened in the US, but Roosevelt's New Deal pragmatism that leaned left and addressed the economic pains was an effective deflection from fascist sentiment. He harnessed radio technology to communicate and convince voters why his policies would work. My views over the past 65 years regarding that have not changed.  Fascism is always lurking in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to emerge when government policies became unpopular or failed to address immediate fears and needs. My abhorrence of fascism and faith in democracy has also been a constant in my political thought.  I considered communism as practiced by Stalin and even Tito of Yugoslavia, inhumane in a failed economic system.  In Berlin, I met a medical student from Yugoslavia, and we were married for over 52 years, living in the US since 1961.  Since 1972 we were able to visit Yugoslavia, and I saw the impact on people's lives from the ground up. It was oppressive and unfair, based on fear of non-compliance. Putin's style of governance is the same as those old communist leaders since he, too, came from that tradition.  He is not a modern leader but a throwback to the past, though without the ideology of Marx, with an outspoken desire to reassemble the Soviet Union's sphere of influence. His invasion of Ukraine wrenched my gut. I admire the spirit of the Ukrainian people in their resistance.  I have close friends and family over the years from  Germany, Austria, Croatia, and Bosnia, and have shared the joy of their embrace of democracy and economic progress.  I have no desire to see Russia try to peel that back from them.  A Russian victory in Ukraine would have destabilized the whole region with constant conflict, and not always bloodless ones.  American Firsters and their  Trumpster followers of the current crop would have permitted that to happen.  Biden did not. He saw an opportunity to stop Russian aggression in its tracks without a war with US bloodshed.  Hopefully, his policies continue, and in 2022 continued Democratic control of the Senate gives me hope.

Political correctness has been replaced by tongues of hatred

Dana, a close friend of my daughter dating to their high school years and their parents became friends of our family, a friendship lasting over 30 years. They had a horrific experience last year.  Dana's mother Sally passed away, and last July they held a zoom memorial service because their synagogue was closed due to COVID-19. This year, another daughter of mine, age 53, passed away and we also opted for a zoom celebration of life hosted by my church pastor. Ours worked beautifully and the recording of the service is a treasure.  Sally's zoom service was hacked by Nazis and swastikas appeared on their screen.  That was just one of the horrors committed by those who felt the time was right to tout their hatred more openly. The numbers of reported antisemitic crimes have tripled since 2018 in Colorado.  Dana's recounting of the incident was featured on television and is available on You Tube. https://youtu.be/59jErmUmI4w      What makes such hate groups feel they have gotten permission to increase their public activities?

Whatever happened to political correctness? The sad state of our nation is that civility, any veneer of supporting a common good, has "gone with the wind". Too often it has been replaced by tongues of hatred and followed by some committing crimes. Even those who do not fancy themselves as hate group fellow travelers are contributing to the atmosphere that encourages them to be more public. Any attempt to castigate some for the lightest tinge of comments defending racial or religious bias is met with counter-accusations from the right of "cancel culture" and anger that "libtards" are trying to do it to them. The definition of culture they feel is under attack has been left to the imagination of others. Some on the left reacted in kind in countering what they see as racial suppression. The country has been divided as speech gloves have been taken off and anger is raw and little hindered. It is clear there is a revolt against "political correctness", once a general agreement among most Americans not to be overtly racist and anti-semitic, to keep noncorrect jokes and slurs hushed, or not to appear publicly antagonistic toward "others" that did not mirror their own ethnic, racial, or religious group. In right-wing demonstrations from Charlottesville to the US Capitol nazi and nazi derived symbols and antisemitic hate slogans are chanted or on display in banners and shirt patches among the other marchers. They and their hate-mongering ilk have always been around, but not so brazenly and publicly in many years as they are now. In the past four years, more have crawled out from under the shadows of rocks to openly flaunt their hate in the light of day. Why?

While verbal and social media barbs are thrown by both sides, the end of more recent societal ethics of political correctness can be traced to the beginning of the Trump era. Donald Trump's words had consequences. The lid of political politeness and respectful speech became something of the past as Trump ripped off the scab of a festering white resentment to the rise of the political power of minorities. Early in the Donald Trump presidential campaign, the slogan that caught fire was Make America Great Again. Reporters had no luck in getting Trump supporters to put into words on camera to which era did they want the US to return that they considered good "again". Trump's oratorical and media skill set was his ability to tap into their gut feelings and to channel them into support of public policy issues which also contributed to his own political power. No longer carried in his favored media were inconvenient facts or embarrassing videos. The media on the left responded by giving focus to what they saw as the truth and reality. Those who tuned in solely to Trump's preferred media still get a view of the world filtered to create a reality that is not shared by viewers and readers of non-Trump media. Recent polls revealed that over half of Republicans believe the election was stolen and Joe Biden was not elected legitimately. At rallies, Trump's devoted audiences cheered racist dog whistle oratory as they jeered at those they disdained. The 1/6 rioters were just tourists viewers were told and they were shown carefully edited videos that neglected to show the violence, vandalism, and combat with police that ended with some dead and 140 injured, and nearly 500 arrested and charged for their alleged criminal behavior. Even with his tweet and facebook wings clipped, Trump's threats to take revenge on non-loyalists get conveyed through other means. Trumpism is now more than just a cult of one person. It is a movement that controls the GOP and uses the fear of being primaried to keep discipline among officeholders and candidates.

Now, in any case, political correctness appears to be no longer part of the culture many assert is being canceled. What this end of political correctness means could also be deduced from which public policy initiatives those decrying political politeness supported that resembled the era before civil rights legislation and the increase in immigration from south of our border. Recent examples are cries of protest against banning Dr. Suess or the renewal of barriers to voting by demographic groups who are viewed as their political opposition. These issues have occupied the Trump media for some time. No government banned any of his books, but the publisher ceased printing several of them at the request of the Suess heirs who did not want Dr. Suess' reputation to reflect racism in a few of his illustrations and words he used in less sensitive times. The other is the wave of voter suppression legislation aimed at making it harder for students, and minorities with lower income and education levels and/or access to transportation to vote. A further objection to the exposure of the participation of neo-Nazis and white nationalist groups in the January 6 riots is also part of the same syndrome. Most of the GOP Senate closed ranks to scuttle further exposure of GOP culpability by voting against an independent commission just before Memorial Day designed by bi-partisan legislators to discover and expose to the public what happened on January 6. Sweeping that embarrassment under the rug will not work and Democrats via hearings and campaign advertisements will make sure voters understand the January 6 rioters were no tourists. Democrats branding Trumpist GOP candidates as anti-democracy will be front and center in the 2022 election campaigns. Exhibits one and two will be videos of January 6 violent rioters carrying Trump banners and airing tactics by GOP Trumpists in state legislatures to suppress certain demographics' ability to vote conveniently and to get their votes counted fairly.

Donald Trump's unique contribution to the end of political correctness was to light a fire under the smoldering sores of divisiveness, resentment of an Obama presidency, and disrespect and hatred of others not like them. . This resulted in more openly expressing intolerance of "others, couched in social media memes and postings, and advocacy of certain public policy positions.. His contribution to racial and religious divide was flagrant, from Charlottesville's new-Nazi parades to Michigan statehouse to the US Capitol, calling white nationalist militias patriots or containing "some good people", his thinly disguised racism tagging one racial group as he kicked off his 2016 campaign with the broad brush of "rapists" and "murderers" or banning another group from entering the US solely because of their religion. Others took the end of political correctness to mean it was a permission slip to be rude and inconsiderate to others or to ignore Covid masking rules and vaccinations as some liberal scam cooked up to control them, to battering innocent Asians on the streets, and to rising antisemitism. That is the sad state of our nation today.

My message to COVID Freedom demonstrators You are infringing on my freedom.

Originally captioned is Trump inciting violence in demonstrations against governors? Updated April 30, 2020

Forwarding to me from Dr. David Lurye, formerly of Winter Park , which he received and posted on Facebook he copied this from another post.
I'll say it again: Your "rights" and "freedoms" do not include the right to endanger others by acting irresponsibly. Even if you want to.
Ok, so, here’s some venting and some explaining and if you don’t like it, I honestly don’t care. Move on and good day to you.
This has easily been the longest 2 months of my career, and, for that matter, my life. COVID-19 has changed everything. The way we live, the way our kids learn, the way we work. It has trashed the economy, exploded unemployment, and harmed businesses, many of them, sadly, beyond repair. But here’s the deal: it’s real and it’s here and it’s still spreading.
As a healthcare worker, I’m exhausted. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. As a manager in the the healthcare industry, it’s been one of the longest, most stressful things I’ve tackled.
First off, the truthers and the conspiracy people and the protesters, you’re not helping. The people bitching CONSTANTLY about the governor’s or whatever level of government’s handling of things, it’s not constructive.
Do you want to know why medical people, real medical people, not some crackpot quacks and kooks with a YouTube account or Facebook page, are taking this seriously? Because it’s serious. And we’re serious people when it comes to people’s health and their lives. Yes, it mostly kills at-risk populations (the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions) but it also kills perfectly healthy people with no prior diagnoses and we don’t know why. I’m so tired of people acting like there’s information that’s being cooked up or withheld. You know why there’s lots of gaps in the information? Because we’re still learning about this virus every day. It’s new. It’s never been seen. How it acts, how it spreads, why it does the things it does is all new and we’re learning on the fly. Stop mistaking genuine lack of information for misinformation or withheld information.
The numbers: this one sticks in my craw like no other. “I heard they didn’t die from COVID-19, they died from a heart attack but they were positive so they called it COVID-19 to boost the numbers and scare people.” Stop. It. You know how many people died specifically from AIDS? Zero. AIDS patients die from pneumonia or some other illness normal, healthy people fight off because the AIDS virus destroyed their immune system and they couldn’t fight off the infection. But at the heart of it, they died because of AIDS. The coronavirus attacks the respiratory system. The respiratory system is, in case you didn’t know, pretty important to sustaining life. It also has a huge impact on how other organ systems, like the heart, work. Guess what, when your lungs don’t work because they’ve basically filled with brick mortar because the virus is attacking them, that puts a bit of a strain on your ticker and very well can cause it to fail. So unless you have a basic understanding of or want to understand how interconnected organ systems are and how the body fundamentally functions: stop.
I think I can speak for a lot of medical professionals when I say, we don’t mean to be arrogant, we don’t mean to be jerks, but damn it, this bullshit is frustrating and yes, we’re going to clap back to ignorance. Ignorance is not something to be flaunted and there is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is being uninformed. Stop being willfully ignorant and even reveling in it because it doesn’t fit your preconceived narrative or opinion. Even worse, stop pretending you’re not ignorant because you watched some damn YouTube video or read some op-ed piece. That’s someone’s opinion, normally based on nothing. NOTHING. No research. That’s not information. That’s not factual. That’s not based in science. It’s click-bait with the sole intention of riling you up and getting you to let your guard down. And instead of being pissed at the virus that’s causing all this, it’s to direct your anger at the government or doctors or anywhere else their agenda wants it directed.
Medical people are fired up for a couple reasons. 1 month ago, we were all heroes and putting our lives on the line because this was dangerous stuff. Well, I think I can speak for most of us when I say we aren’t heroic, we’re just doing our job. But guess what, we’re still doing the same damn thing we were doing a month ago and this crap still hasn’t gone away but now we’re “just trying to scare people” because “it’s really no big deal.” We aren’t looking for a pat on the back or even a thank you, we just want you to do what we all need to do to stop this thing and avoid the spread. Listen, if you think that my big fat ass enjoys sweating like a whore in church in an isolation gown, walking around like Mr Magoo because my glasses are fogged up because of my mask, and wearing goggles that dig into the backs of my ears because I’m “just a sheep,” you are mistaken. It’s because I don’t want this virus and I don’t want to take it home to my family and I don’t want to infect my co-workers and other patients. We’re fired up because we’ve seen and even performed intubations. We don’t intubate for funsies. Outside of the surgical setting, an intubation is basically throwing a Hail Mary to save someone’s life. And when the mortality rate once that plastic tube slides between your vocal cords with COVID-19 is 85-89%, yeah, that’s terrifying. This virus is dangerous.
Lastly, stop being spoiled children about public health advisories. Stop bitching about wearing a mask when you’re in public places. Stop pretending that that is somehow infringing on your rights. Get over yourself. I wish all businesses would grow a pair and refuse service to people who refuse to wear a mask “out of principle.” Police aren’t inclined to enforce it and that’s fine but, spoiler alert, private businesses have and reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. Don’t tell me it’s ok for a bakery to refuse service to a gay couple for a wedding cake on religious grounds but not ok for a convenience store to refuse service because they don’t want the outbreak monkey strolling through their place coughing all over other patrons and their staff. Stay outside the 6ft bubble, wear a damn mask, and wash your hands. It’s that easy. Stop pretending they’re asking for a kidney. It’s as much to protect yourself as it is everyone else. People wonder why we have things like stay-at-home orders and closing of non-essential businesses. It’s because of you, jackass, you’re the problem. It’s your lack of ability to exercise common sense and your refusal to follow simple, insanely simple advice that forces the government to exercise it for you. And even then, you still thumb your nose at it in all your ignorant glory. Sorry that you feel like they’re infringing on your right to be an irresponsible child.
Look, all I’m saying is I get that it’s frustrating and I get that it’s irritating, and inconvenient and all the other bad things that it is, but please, continue to take this seriously, continue to do the little things that make a big difference. Stop denying facts, science, and the advice from people who have spent a lifetime doing what they do in the medical and research fields to ultimately make everyone’s lives healthier, safer, and better.
I’m done with my soap box now. ✌🏻
My message to the" freedom "demonstrators:  Freedom has its limits, and it has always had those limits when it infringes on the rights of others. In this COVID -19 case, the safety of others and me are at stake. Your selfish and self-serving actions are infringing on my freedom. The irresponsibility you and others advocate would also spread it to more innocent people. This is thanks to your ideologically driven wilful ignorance and lack of caring either about your own health or the health of others in trying to force premature disregard of stay at home orders. With this virus, carriers of the disease may not even know they are carrying it...or they think they just have a little cold. In another disease of years past, we called such spreaders Typhoid Marys. Without testing, we do not know how many like those are even in our community. We do not even know what the odds are when we do not know what the risk is even if we wanted to gamble leaving our homes now.. The number of people one carrier of COVID 19 can infect can be as high as 3.5 people.
On April 30 a Michigan court ruled in favor of the Governor's right to impose stay at home decisions. Michigan has been the epicenter of demonstrations by opponents of stay at home orders. Demonstrators have included in militia members brandishing assault weapons with ammo clips in them and storming the state legislature which was debating whether to extend the stay at home orders. https://www.newsweek.com/michigan-gretchen-whitmer-lawsuit-1501109?amp=1&fbclid=IwAR3re4Rs5wuR4_MqWTku4ppvwf2ObJNQtX https://sph.umich.edu/pursuit/2020posts/how-scientists-quantify-outbreaks.html
Bring on the demonstrators; demand freedom from the stay at home orders issued by governors, as Trump calls out via tweets specific Democratic ones in swing states critical to his re-election. https://abcnews.go.com/US/residents-protest-coronavirus-stay-home-orders-states/story?id=70233220 This was after telling governors they can decide what's best for their state in reopening them for business.  Much of these demonstrations are being fueled by right-wing activist groups, similar to the Tea Pary, as a way, observers to believe, that their purpose is to put the blame for the response to the pandemic on them, and to get Trump off the hook in November.  In Denver, April 19, the demonstrators were noisy but peaceful, many staying in their cars. However, they chose to demonstrate when Colorado's Department of Health reported over nine thousand cases of confirmed COVID-19 infections and over 400 deaths, reaching the highest numbers to date.  Recent public opinion polls show both Democrats and Republicans are afraid to lift stay and home orders and opening for business now. https://fox40.com/news/national-and-world-news/ap-norc-poll-few-americans-support-easing-virus-protections/
Is Trump inciting violence? Actually, the demonstrations were funded heavily by the Dorr family, famous for disinformation to promote their pro gun anti choice agenda. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/conservative-activist-family-behind-grassroots-anti-quarantine-facebook-events-n1188021?fbclid=IwAR0Qn7_eNyRrXGPEM3AlEWwT9pMNUmH9PIkKB7ytX5HcfyUCIYpQQORY65QThe demonstrators turned out in Michigan wearing MAGA hats, some waiving anti-government, and Confederate flags and guns. Why? Why guns other than to threaten violence if the governor does not cave in to their demands?  Why Confederate flags often toted by neo-Nazis, anti-Semitics?  "They like me", Trump said when asked about the demonstrators. I was just waiting for Trump calling the demonstrators "some fine people". In a weird and troubling twist on the Nazi theme, governors of Michigan and Colorado's governor were called Nazis by "freedom" backers for issuing stay at home orders. Colorado's governor had a public meltdown since he was Jewish. Freedom for what? Freedom to act like irresponsible juveniles who don't believe the virus will kill them or they will infect others? Freedom to riot a la Charlottesville? Never had we had a president to urge anti-government demonstrations against his own official guidelines, either. The president is a danger to the civil order of our society because gun-waving neo-Nazis and their ilk can and have easily turned violent in violation of the right guaranteed in the constitution to demonstrate peacefully. Before he knows it, they can act beyond his control. Or does he want them to act that way to make a political point?
Let me give you a personal plea: I have a daughter who is a grocery store deli clerk with a major chain in the Denver area.  The store in which she works is in one of the heaviest Trump-supporting areas in Colorado. She has asthma. She supplies her own masks. Others in her section are over 60, and like her, some also are recovering from cancer.  Masks keep her from infecting others. They do not protect her from those not wearing masks.  She is at risk; her life is at risk.  However, there are many customers who think they are making a political statement or are not taking COVID-19 seriously and they are not prohibited from shopping even if they do not wear masks. Without testing, they have no way of knowing if they are asymptomatic carriers or even if the little cold they may have might be the virus. Their infecting droplets are dangerous. They could infect up to 3.5 more people with their virus. Their political statement of freedom,  to ignore even the president's guidelines, is dangerous, inconsiderate, and harmful to their own health.  Shame on them.

The photo of the freedom demonstrators in Denver that went viral in the US and internationally was of the health care workers in scrubs and masks standing with crossed arms to block a vehicle cavalcade led by a crazed-looking woman hanging out of a pickup truck window demanding that the stay at home orders be lifted so she could go about her freedom, free to get sick and get others sick from COVID 19. That was not the message the demonstrators intended that would warm the cockles of any person questioning whether a stay at home order should be lifted.  It was a picture worth a thousand words.
From the UK Daily Mail: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8235127/amp/Defiant-healthcare-workers-clash-anti-lockdown-protesters-Colorado.html?__twitter_impression=true&fbclid=IwAR29myojcwwlJBiJ0TU13KwrrqvQ9_r9aDwQYxcVa6R8s0DV5UK3SoUQG_U
The demonstrations have been overtly political, organized, funded, and designed by Tea Party type Trump supporters who are trying to shift blame to the governors from Donald Trump's fumbling, delayed, incompetence in handling the response to the virus. Their targets are swing states President Trump needs to win if he is to be reelected in November. https://www.vox.com/2020/4/19/21225195/stay-at-home-protests-trump-tea-party-reelection?fbclid=IwAR0QkYRnrTlLv5HK3N15J2UStvt89CzJExnV9rl6brM7-31-HIT_p-P85l0
The message the demonstrators were delivering ignored the fact that Gov. Polis of Colorado had already set April 26 before the demonstrations as the date his stay at home orders were going to be lifted anyway.  Polis's orders for re-opening business are gradual and phased in slowly, with safety valves if the disease ticks up. All schools and universities are to remain closed; people should exercise social distancing and wear facemasks.
From Colorado Public Radio: Colorado’s Stay-At-Home Order Will End, Gov. Polis Says, Outlining A New Phase Of Coronavirus ‘Marathon’ | Colorado Public Radio
""Your May will look a lot like your April if you’re in that most vulnerable group," he said.
“We can’t lose sight of the fact that our job isn’t finished, your job isn’t finished, not by a long shot,” Polis said, as he outlined new rules for businesses that would maintain levels of social distancing that are much higher than normal, but that are greatly relaxed from the way the state has operated for nearly a month.
“Retail curbside delivery, any retail that wants to do that, that starts immediately April 27,” Polis said. Other retail would be allowed to open May 1 with some restrictions.
He said that elective surgeries would be allowed starting Monday.
Large workplaces, starting May 4, will be allowed to open at 50 percent capacity, and are advised to have symptom and temperature checks for workers as they arrive.
Polis said his own goal for bars, restaurants and clubs to reopen would be mid-May, but that he’d have to wait for data on the effects of other changes to make those decisions."

COLUMN VERSION (CONDENSED AND EDITED)

My message to the" freedom "demonstrators is this:

Freedom has its limits, and it has always had those limits when it infringes on the rights of others. In this COVID -19 case, the safety of others, my family, and me are at stake. Your self-serving actions are infringing on my freedom. The irresponsibility you and others advocate to “open up the state”  in the middle of the state’s height in a pandemic would also spread it to more innocent people. This is thanks to your l ignorance or lack of caring either about your own health or the health of others in trying to force premature disregard of stay at home orders. With this virus, carriers of the disease may not even know they are carrying it...or they think they just have a little cold. In another disease of years past, we called such spreaders Typhoid Marys.  Without testing, we do not know how many like those are even in our community. We do not even know what the risk is even if we wanted to gamble leaving our homes now. The number of people one carrier of COVID 19 can infect can be as high as 3.5 people.

Bring on the demonstrators; demand freedom from the stay at home orders issued by governors, as President Trump called out support to demonstrations via tweets ones in specific swing states critical to his re-election.  This was after telling governors they can decide what is best for their state in reopening themselves for business.  In Denver, April 19, the demonstrators were noisy but peaceful, many staying in their cars. However, they chose the time to demonstrate when Colorado's Department of Health reported over nine thousand cases of confirmed COVID-19 infections and over 400 deaths, reaching the highest numbers in the state to date.
The demonstrators turned out in Michigan a week before wearing MAGA hats, some waiving anti-government, and Confederate flags and guns. Why? Why guns other than to threaten violence if the governor does not cave into their demands?  Why Confederate flags often toted by racist extremists. In a weird and troubling twist on the Nazi theme, governors of Michigan and Colorado's governor were called by demonstrators Nazis by "freedom" backers for issuing stay at home orders. Colorado's governor had a public meltdown since he was Jewish. Freedom for what? Freedom to act like irresponsible persons who do not believe the virus will kill them or they will infect others?
Let me give you a personal plea: I have a daughter who is a grocery store deli clerk with a major chain in the Denver area. Grocery store clerks are considered essential workers and given the dangers they fact, they are also included in the list of COVID-19 heroes. Yes, she is lucky to have a job but it is more than that. Grocery store clerks do it at considerable risk to themselves. She has asthma. She supplies her own masks. Others in her section are over 60, and like her, some also are recovering from cancer.  Masks keep her from infecting others. They do not protect her from those not wearing masks.  She is at risk; her life is at risk.  However, there are many customers who think they are making a political statement or are not taking COVID-19 seriously and they are not prohibited from shopping even if th
https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/22/opinions/denver-1918-lesson-avlon/index.htmley do not wear masks. Without testing, they have no way of knowing if they are asymptomatic carriers or even if the little cold they may have might be the virus. Their infecting droplets are dangerous. They could infect up to 3.5 more people with their virus. Their political statement of freedom, to ignore even the president's official  COVID Task Force guidelines, is dangerous to others, inconsiderate, and harmful to their own health.  Shame on them.    For more, visit www.mufticforumblog.blogspot.com

Why I am worried about American Democracy's future

A version of this was published in the Sky Hi News July 31-Aug 1, 2018
https://www.skyhinews.com/news/opinion/muftic-why-i-am-worried-about-american-democracys-future/

Thirteen years after World War II ended I spent my university junior year abroad in Berlin. It was a heady time for a US political science major wondering why what had happened. The Wall had not yet been built. I had conversations with survivors of the Nazi regime that seized control of democratic government with populist support and violence and now it lay in ruins. I saw first
hand how the Soviets used propaganda and violence  to consolidate control of their conquered once democratic eastern Europe.  I married a medical student from Yugoslavia, then a communist country headed by dictator Tito who had both popular support and who used brute force. We settled in the US, he became a US citizen, a respected doctor in private practice, active in civic and political affairs, and never taking for granted the freedom to pursue his dreams. We first visited Yugoslavia and his family in 1972 when the country began to allow  refugees to visit. We returned about every two years until mid-2015, when he passed away. I experienced Yugoslavia in their brutal Stalinist era, fear of a late-night knock at the door, their period of a more benign dictatorship that still forbad dissent, and their civil war for independence. Today Croatia is democratic and a member of the EU and NATO.

I wish such painful histories on no one. Modern autocrats like Putin of Russia and Erdogan of Turkey have used some of the same techniques 20th century dictators used to turn democracies into dictatorships.  Donald Trump admires them. and adopts and tolerates some of their media and election tactics.

Fair elections are the very foundation of American democracy. Media free both to criticize and to validate is one key. Security of election systems is another.  An informed electorate that will and can listen to all sides of public debate, sorts truth from fiction, and then votes while trusting the integrity of election systems can nip wannabe despots in the bud, allowing democracy to
survive.

Like his “strong men” idols, Donald Trump is no fan of freedom of the press or an advocate of elections secure from foreign manipulation. Instead he frequently denies Russians meddled on his behalf in 2016 and favors and consults with media who support his views. In October he threatened to yank NBC’s broadcast licenses whose news reports also include news and data unfavorable to him. He calls media "enemies of the people”, tags reports he dislikes as” dishonest”,” “fake “, lies, while fact checkers work overtime exposing his playing loose with facts.  Just last week he told a VFW audience, “what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what’s happening…Just stick with us.”
He continued to call contrary reports, "crap".. Claiming there are no credible facts except those presented by the Leader (Hitler called contrary press, the lying press..Lugenpresse) is a tool wannabe dictators  have used to destroy freedom of the press. In fact, at campaign rallies some of Trump supporters aggressively chanted "Lugenpresse" at reporters.

He banned a CNN reporter from the White House for asking tough questions, said he was yanking security clearances of former intelligence officials who criticized him, and initially left out of official Helsinki transcripts Putin admitting he wanted Trump to win in 2016.

We know from Mueller’s indictment texts, Russians in 2016 used many media platforms to intensify racial and ideological divisions to help Trump. They hacked into state election systems and political party sites, showing an ability to manipulate future election outcomes.

So why am I worried about American democracy's future?  So many do not care. A July 17 Atlantic/PRRI poll found only 22% of Republicans thought influence from foreign government in our elections was a major problem versus 68% Democrats; 40% independents and a subservient GOP House just voted down funding for hardening state elections systems’ cyber security.   Democracy is fragile, and its survival depends upon the dedicated support of the governed.  That support is weak and fractured.

A worrisome poll:

40% of GOP members are OK with Russian meddling; 11% welcome it. https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/republicans-want-russia-influence-us-elections-202847050.html

Freedom of the press, concern about the rule of law, abiding by the Constitution, do not even turn up as a blip on polls of top voters' issues: .https://www.vox.com/.../2018-midterm-polls-policy...

A frightening poll;   https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a22600827/donald-trump-supporters-believe-the-media/

How racial and ethnic hatred can destroy nations and their people

(Updated 8/20/17 and references added 9/17)  A version of this was published in the Sky Hi News, August 23, 2017
Donald Trump’s once implied  tolerance  of white nationalist support and his many hints of sympathy for them are now explicit. He revealed  that  dark corner  of his mind  in  the bright light of  his  post Charlottesville tweets and public statements.  These events have reminded me of  my personal  lifelong  quest  to understand  why  people of  civilized and educated nations act out  hatred of fellow  citizens, unmindful that it would  lead to the destruction of their own homelands. If the history  of Nazi Germany and the tragedy of Bosnia are not sufficient  lessons of where this can lead, heaven help our country.

I am optimistic that  America  is taking a different course because of  the growing number of  Republican leaders  and corporate America CEOs  who  called out Trump   for giving the KKK and neo-Nazis the same moral equivalence as those who opposed them. Others, from clergy to the military Joint Chiefs reaffirmed their condemnation of  racial  hatred. Sheer numbers of those marching overwhelmingly peacefully against hate in Boston Saturday further relegates those hate groups to a fringe that uses terrorist tactics to inflate their influence.

My 1958-1959 junior year abroad  was spent in  an occupied post war Berlin where  shrapnel scarred remains  of  buildings  were separated by  empty spaces of rubble. I had many conversations with  Germans as I tried to understand how Nazis came to power and the Holocaust happened.  I met my future husband,  a refugee from another destroyed, Nazi invaded country, Yugoslavia.  From him I got personal insights into a family experiences and views. On spring break, I toured  his country, the first of many visits.  Yugoslavia  was not only a battleground between Nazi forces and the  resistance, there was an ethnic war, as well.  The subsequent  Communist government of  dictator Marshal Tito  kept the lid on simmering ethnic hatred until  after his death  the 1990’s Balkan wars  broke out.   I was a close hand witness of the times leading up to  that conflict and the aftermath.   The Balkan’s  economic recovery from communism was set back years. The former Yugoslavia  is now broken up  into  several small countries.

What I did find  from Berlin to the Balkans is that  political leaders rose to power  by appealing to many of their countrymen’s long time hatred  of those of  a different faith or ethnicity   Leaders hyped blame on these “others”   as the reason for individual  and national  failure. They struck  a responsive chord with large numbers of their population who felt victimized   and others  who believed  in those same leaders who   promised  to solve their economic malaise and chose to turn their backs on the rest.

I see those same elements of blame and victimization in the US in  recent polls. In one study  45% of Trump voters, felt they were  being more discriminated against   than were  minorities. Those in Trump’s own administration have whispered to reporters, while expressing  dismay in his post Charlottesville comments, they would stick with Trump because he has promised tax and  regulatory reform and economic growth. Likewise, recent polls show Republicans are standing by their man.

An  icon of the results of  ethnic hatred is  one of those fragments of  Yugoslavia:  Bosnia.  During   my frequent visits to Bosnia  I have seen what happened when  ethnic hatred erupted into ethnic cleansing.  Bosnia  is now the poorest country in Europe with a government paralyzed by  ethnic groups still not working out their differences, but fortunately working  within a nominal  framework of democracy.
When I see white supremacists chanting  “ take back America “ which means ridding America  of all who are not white Christians or subjugating them to white rulers, I get sick to my stomach. I know how  that can end.
