"Slavery was not that bad" is Trump's newest propaganda line.

As part of the White Nationalist influence in the GOP, as personified by Project 2025's anti-DEI purpose, now the Trump regime is trying to rewrite official history (revisionism like the Chinese and Russian communists undertook to justify their policies) by pressuring the Smithsonian to stop portraying slavery as so terrible. Trump says the Smithsonian focuses too much on 'how bad slavery was'   Even now, reference to Trump's impeachments is removed from the Smithsonian because of his objections. Trump’s impeachments have been removed from a Smithsonian exhibit, for now : NPR If the Smithsonian complies, it will become the Trump Propaganda History Museum.  Its lies will be revealed by the preservation of the real history of newspaper report archives and of slavery in America by many institutions not dependent on federal funding. This recent outrage, coupled with recruitment appeals to racists to join ICE "to defend your culture", is the newest example of Trump's racist appeal to some of his core supporters.

To bring this up to date, the persistence of these racist attitudes in my native Oklahoma is that the anti-woke attitudes will be taught to their children in school, as all teachers hired from blue states will have to be screened to get teaching jobs for compliance with anti-wokism..Exclusive: Oklahoma to begin controversial test to weed out ‘woke’ teacher applicants today | CNN Politics  Oklahoma by any measure ranks lowest in education, near the bottom of the 50 states. Oklahoma schools ranked nearly the worst in the nation in new study  Whatever education their children get will now be MAGA's view.  Oklahoma has already banned  DEI on higher education campuses.  DEI ban on Oklahoma college campuses signed into law • Oklahoma Voice.   Nearly 8% of Oklahoma's population in African-American per Google AI, and Tulsa was the site of the most famous racial massacre of blacks  by whites,( Greenwood, 1921), in US history per Wikipedia..

What is so horrible about this newest example of the racism element in Trump's MAGA movement to paint slavery as not that bad is that slavery has been a part of human history forever, and usually those enslaved were bounty and victims of a lost war, regardless of race or religion, but the uniqueness of American slavery is that those enslaved were of a particular race and color, enslaved because they were considered inferior, less intelligent, less competent, for one reason, because they were black.

. I remember my days growing up as a little white girl in a Jim Crow-like culture in Oklahoma, where I was sat down, not my parents, but by my music teacher,  and told  Negroes were descended from monkeys and were just not equal to white people. I was 12 or so in the early 1950s.  I had been told by my parents, who were from the north, that black people were every bit as smart and intelligent as white people.  They were human beings like us and deserved to be treated likewise.

There were two attitudes I heard expressed by other adults then, too. It was either that they deserved being cared for because they were inferior to us whites, a paternalistic holiness; after all they got free food, clothing, and housing, and medical care. Say what? Here is what I know. This was in return for work with no pay, rape, beatings of the slackers, and death to those who revolted. Slaves were property.  Starving and sick and unable to work were of no value. Rebellious slaves were to be feared.  Negroes were to be controlled by violence, lynching,  and brute force to keep them in their place. (I am using the word "Negroes"; that was the term used in "polite" white people's conversation then; the "n" word was in more common and open usage.).  Whether Trump himself is like that, he is careful with his words, is a matter of deduction and surmise, but with such statements, he reflects some of those same racist attitudes held in the ruby red south that  I remember from growing up in that culture.  Cudos to  Joe Scarborough on MSNBC today, that those who deny the awfulness of human slavery in the US are like the holocaust deniers.  He is right: both deniers are ...trying to erase the guilt of their participating or approving in acts that are the worst examples of an awful side of human nature.

Fascism is shaping youth to believe in the leader's ideology: it's happening : Update 8/1/2025

Now one of Trump's top advisors only wants funds to go to educating kids who reflect his view of democracy. Stephen Miller claims that children are being taught to be 'communist' in schools. What's communist about it?|Spell it out. He did. Communism is woke culture. (So that means diversity, equity, and inclusion are communist?. Dang...and I thought they were Christian concepts. ) Pope Leo XIV may have some ideas about this, too. 'Our new woke pope': Newly minted pontiff’s post slamming JD Vance lights up social media

Removal of Trump From Smithsonian Impeachment Exhibit Sparks Outrage - Newsweek Rewriting history to make the dear leader look flawless is the stuff China and other doctorship run countries use to control the thought of their subjects. That Trump was impeached twice is now removed from the Smithsolnian museum.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/05/22/oklahoma-schools-teach-2020-election-big-lie-trump/83731606007/ This is not civics ; this is brain washing. of children. It is what is done in communist and fascist dictatorships. There is a good reason Okahoma education ranks 49th in the nation and is such a ruby red state. There is a correlation.

How about teaching kids American history and why we have a separation of powers, the Bill of Rights to protect us from an overreaching and abusive federal government, and protect the civil rights of all of us, and how we fought fascist ideas and their methods in World War II.

Update 5/14/2025 Here is a problem, however, if whatever civic education is required nationally, the contents can be controlled to suit whatever party or wannabe dictator is in charge of the Department of Education, or whatever parts of the federal government have the power to set policy. One way to deal with that is to tie the exam or course contents to the citizenship test required in the naturalization process as part of any enabling or funding legislation. One problem is that civics is no longer part of achievement testing scores, so it is no longer emphasized in our education system. A passing grade in civics, tied to the citizenship test, should be required for graduation from high school.

If anything, Miller's contribution to the Trump regime is his anti-immigrant stance, including using the cruelty of family separation as a tool and in deporting immigrants without due process. He is viewed as an extremist in these sensitive matters. Given his anti-immigrant reputation, I doubt if the Bill of Rights and the civil rights-related amendments would be high on his required list of curriculum topics. The Southern Poverty Law Center tags him as an extremist.https://www.splcenter.org/resources/extremist-files/stephen-miller/.

Per Google AI  "in rankings related to K-12 education, Oklahoma generally performs poorly, often being ranked near the bottom. Specifically, U.S. News & World Report and The Annie E. Casey Foundation's Kids Count report place Oklahoma 48th and 49th respectively in educationWalletHub's study also ranks Oklahoma as having one of the worst public school education systems. "

As a country we sorely need an education in civics and the Abrego Garcia case is an opportunity.

Update 5/2/2025: A majority  are getting the message. Per a respected public pollster, 54% of Americans see Trump as a dangerous dictator. The rest think Trump should have more power to accomplish his goals. Most Americans Describe Donald Trump as 'Dangerous Dictator'—New Poll - Newsweek

Continuing with the original post:

Why does it seem eyes glaze over whenever the rule of law, the Constitution, is cited and terms like separation of powers and checks and balances are tossed around? No wonder we are about to lose our democracy. We are a country of civics illiterates.  As a country, we sorely need an education in civics, and the Abrego Garcia case is an opportunity.  Somewhere, our educational system failed us. Naturalized citizens must pass a civics test to become citizens, and according to a 2018 survey, 60% of  Americans would flunk it.  Those over 65 had learned it in school; the younger you are, the more likely you are to fail. "Those 65 years and older scored the best, with 74 percent answering at least six in 10 questions correctly. For those under the age of 45, only 19 percent passed with the exam, with 81 percent scoring a 59 percent or lower."National Survey Finds Just 1 in 3 Americans Would Pass Citizenship Test - Institute for Citizens & Scholars. No wonder the age and educational divide predict who votes for whom in any poll. No wonder we are about to lose our democracy because 60% of voters do not understand how worse it could be without it. This is a challenge for political messaging. Trump's defiance of the Constitution and the rule of law presents an opportunity for a national civics lesson. It is also important for anyone crafting a political message to take heed.   An explanation in common terms must be part of any messaging of what it means and why it is important to all of us.

Update 6/1/2025 https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/05/22/oklahoma-schools-teach-2020-election-big-lie-trump/83731606007/
This is not civics ; this is brain washing. of children. It is what is done in communist and fascist dictatorships. There is a good reason Okahoma education ranks 49th in the nation and is such a ruby red state. There is a correlation. (PS I was born and raised in Oklahoma and left the state after college graduating)

As part of Harvard's answer to Trump's retaliation and revenge campaign for not bowing to him, Harvard is planning to offer a free online course on American civics and the Constitution.

So here is lesson one: What the heck is due process?

We are now aware of a term we may not have learned in school: "due process".Why is due process so important? All persons in the US are protected by the 5th amendment of the Constitution. It protects us from being snatched and disappeared by a tyrannical government. That is why the Supreme ruled 9 to 0 that migrants are covered ..including Abrego Garcia. It is fundamental to our personal freedom from fear of an overpowering "King", tyrant, or dictator. The Abrego Garcia case is a learning opportunity.

The Google AI definition of due process: The Fifth Amendment's Due Process Clause guarantees that the federal government cannot deprive individuals of life, liberty, or property without following fair legal procedures. This includes providing notice, a hearing, and a neutral decision-maker when the government is taking action that affects those fundamental rights. The Due Process Clause also limits the government's power to interfere with certain fundamental liberties, regardless of procedures followed.

If you are ever accused wrongfully of a crime or even disobey a tyrant ..you would be especially grateful for it. If Trump succeeds in defying it..the precedent is set that the due process clause has no teeth and therefore, we all are no longer protected by the due process clause. It is unenforceable no matter how a court rules that it is Constitutional in this case. This is why the Abrego Garcia case and Trump's defiance of court rulings have the makings of a Constitutional crisis. Without adherence by all to court rulings, like them or not, the Constitution is just a piece of paper that once had importance in history.

Lesson number two: The rule of law still rules. It is being challenged by the rule of Trump as Trump demands judges whose judgment he does not like to be impeached, and he tries to get around obeying court orders by pulling a stunt that looks like criminal contempt of a judge's order. For example, in the Abrego Garcia incident. Judge just found probable cause Trump did in this flight of the night incident to avoid complying with court order. "those individuals were on planes being flown overseas, having been spirited out of the United States by the Government before they could vindicate their due-process rights by contesting their removability in a federal court, as the law requires." We have not heard the end of this story.  There will be a full-out trial of the stunt, and if the Trump admin. is found guilty, someone may go to jail over this. https://www.npr.org/2025/04/16/g-s1-60696/judge-contempt-alien-enemies-act
Update 5/1/2025 : https://www.newsweek.com/trump-appointed-judge-hands-migrants-legal-win-against-president-2066830   and upholds the right of immigrants to protect their due process by objecting to the application of the alien enemies act to their cases.
