No kidding. The real fear facing FOX: loss of audience trust updated 3/11/23

The eyeopeners in sworn testimony and text messages between them showed their contempt for Trump himself and the shared belief that the election was not stolen, while on camera they were promoting the exact opposite views. The reasons they gave were revealed in these depositions is that if they reported what they really thought did not reflect their loyal audiences' misconceptions fed to them by Trump and other media outlets, they would lose ratings.  Their fear was not of being called out as hypocrites; they feared they would lose their loyal audience who had believed what three of the hosts themselves privately called  BS.  Instead, they promoted on air  Donald Trump's version of the truth.  At CPAC he promised retribution against those who did not fall in line with his explanation of why he was called a loser.

Damning Dominion depositions showed what those opinion personalities and execs themselves in real-time thought about the violence and significance of January 6. In an attempt to justify some FOX  opinion hosts twisting the January 6 riot violence into a peaceful protest, Tucker Carlson this past week attempted to revise history to fit his public views.    Tucker Carlson cherry-picked police videos that depicted the rioters as peaceful looky-loo tourists. With 140 Capitol police injured,  the police defending the Capitol tripped over their own feet? Since the violence was shown live on TV as it took place, I wonder how many who were glued to their TV's that day still believe in peaceful tourist sham.  There were videos shot on January 6 by a variety of videographers. One from ITV Britain entered the Capitol with the rioters. and security cameras were used as evidence in  the January 6 select committee hearings and trials.  One outcome was evidence that the violence was led by anti-government militia members. No Antifa members turned up in any data source.  They were joined by others who were angered by the big lie. An estimated ten thousand breached the capitol grounds on January 6 per the police and AP,  and about 2 thousand of those entered the Capitol there.   Of those two thousand, about 1000 have been prosecuted on a variety of criminal charges. 26 Months Since the Jan. 6 Attack on the Capitol (justice.gov) Trump, the wannabe dictator, this week also called those who found themselves charged with crimes and/or imprisoned "political prisoners" who he would release immediately if re-elected.  To heck with evidence and the judicial process or the rule of law.  That's just what autocrats do.

What is driving FOX is fear of losing ratings which translates into advertising revenue.  That was also revealed in the Dominion deposition transcripts.  What FOX did not count on was a release of the transcripts of sworn depositions and text messages to other media outlets. FOX hosts promoted guests they texted privately they considered were nuts,  the ones who claimed the Domion tabulating systems were falsely programmed to favor Biden. Whether the revelation of the lies FOX told their audience that Dominium was the one whose systems stole their election when they knew the election was not stolen would be enough evidence to help Dominium win their defamation suit will meet the high bar of proof required when freedom of speech is at issue will probably be decided by a jury. Settlement before a trial would require FOX to admit some culpability which would be a bad PR move. Better for their reputation would be if Dominion lost the suit.Critical will be proving intentional harm to Dominion. Defamation case law favors the media's first amendment rights. It then could be claimed that the FOX hosts and Rupert Murdoch were off the hook for their hypocritical role. Regardless of the suit outcomes.FOX the bad taste will linger,  that they themselves were hypocritical, fooled their audience, feared rating loss, and took their audience for fools.. Regardless of a trial outcome, the damage has already been done to the trust in FOX  bringing bad news their viewers would not like.

 https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/fox-dominion-reach-787m-settlement-220400496.html

Did FOX admit they lied about Dominium's voting systems contributing to  Trump's defeat in 2020?  In effect, they did, but it was not in a sound bite.  Instead, they acknowledged the judge's ruling to move the case to trial because it was "crystal clear" FOX had lied. The trial would have decided on the amount of settlement and rehashing of what was discovered in the pre-trial process. The depositions of sworn testimony made public as part of the civil defamation case leadup to trial were damning, with testimony from those who knew that behind the scenes, FOX evening personalities knew that it was a lie, but still promoted it as truth to their viewers.  This was only the first case to end of others suing FOX for defamation of their company's voting systems are still pending.  This is not only an enormous defamation settlement against a media entity (3/4 of a billion dollars), its significance is that on the public record for history, a  trusted media source lied about the 2020 election was stolen and that their followers swallowed it hook line and sinker and motivated the  Jan.6 rioters.

"We acknowledge the Court’s rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false," the Fox statement said.

No wonder this country is politically split nearly with the edge barely going to the Democrats..  The impact on FOX News either shapes or reflects the opinions of its viewers and nearly 40% of voters get their news from that cable channel.   Pew Research has done the only survey I could find of where Americans get their news, and 39% get it from FOX. It was conducted in 2019 and released in 2020. The other 61% get their news from other sources, mostly mainstream publications, print, TV broadcasts, and other cable channels. The impact of social media, even more important, was not included in their survey. Social media is an amplifying vehicle,  spreading whatever news and/or opinion is out there to those who are already loyal to one side or other of the political spectrum.  In primetime, FOX NEWS opinion hosts garner over 50% of the listeners. Tucker Carlson's ratings even spiked after the Dominium texts revealed him as believing one thing in private and another in public about Donald Trump and the 2020 election, as he attempted to rewrite the history of January 6 by showing video clips only of peaceful rioters.

Replacement theory is a danger to more than just African Americans ; it is a danger to democracy itself

Replacement theory is a danger to more than just African  Americans. Victims in the past several years have included Jews, Hispanics,  and others.  It is also a danger to democracy and is a fuel that ignites the afterburners of autocracy. Yearning for autocracy and white domination are wedded and even promoted by influential elements in US media, like Tucker Carlson and FOX, and major conservative organizations. The embrace of Viktor Orban of similar racist policies also brings with it association with autocracy as a preferred method of governance instead of democracy.

A recent Associated Press story began with a white older woman from Trinidad, Colorado, for over 400 years a corner of my state dominated by Hispanics.  She was held out as an example of a FOX Carlson fan who embraced the "replacement theory", a theory that Democrats were trying to replace white people with too many Hispanic immigrants and Jewish interests like George Soros were behind the effort. This theory, per a recent poll, is a belief that is held by one out of three Americans that those supporting more relaxed immigration policies on our southern border were promoting immigration because the goal was to replace white voters with brown ones at the polls. EXPLAINER: White 'replacement theory' fuels racist attacks | AP News

The demographic shifts are due to a decline in white population growth, especially among the emerging new generations, and an increase in birth rates of those not white. . Theory or not, replacement theory is fueled by fear of loss of power by white people, who see demographics changing and it has become the tool of entertainers like Carlson and political movements like MAGA  dating to Tea Partiers to either gain advertisers or votes and or power from the like-minded.  I have long believed that such anger, fear, and hate supporting theories were embraced as the truth because the holders of fear, the angry, and the hateful, want to believe in them. This willfulness is fueled by dislike or fear of people who are not like them and exploited and enhanced by the power craven.   I have noticed there are times it has become more public, and other times it has diminished from the "breaking news" and media opinionists. It is raising its public voice again in the past few years.  President Biden said it best: about white nationalism  "It is a stain on the soul of America", in comments about those who have been victims of  a racist/replacement theorist mass killer in Buffalo,  It is wrongheaded thinking to think that victims are only African Americans, but Muslims, Jews, and Hispanics (of any Latin descent )The Decade's Top 10 Incidents of Hate (adl.org)

In the American past dating to the 1940s, the object of actions of hate has been directed to include Italians, Irish, and Catholics. Even in the midst of World War II, it existed, yet the rest of the nation saw the evil of tyrants who also exploited hate to rise to power and rationalize the aggression. This is one of those periods in American history that this undercurrent has risen to the surface from a fringe political movement to greater public acceptance and a degree of respectability. Nowhere is mainstream acceptance more evident that the outright embrace of those from CPAC of Vickor Orban, prime minister of Hungary.      https://www.vox.com/2022/5/19/23123050/hungary-cpac-2022-replacement-theory

This update is also moved to a separate post Hungary: CPAC's fantasyland.:Such wide acceptance of replacement theory is becoming a threat to democracy itself.  This embrace of Viktor Orban of similar racist policies of anti-immigration and Hungarian ethnic domination also brings with it association with autocracy as a preferred method of governance instead of democracy. Hungary's Orban opens CPAC by telling conservatives "we need to coordinate the movement" of allies - CBS News    Tread lightly, CPAC.  You, too, will find yourself with not only the racist, anti-semitic white nationalism that is Orban's but saddled with his method of governing, which means no press freem ( or press only permitted that is approved by Orban) and what we would consider in the US, a corrupt alliance between big business and government with rewards going to friends of Orban.  Hungary is not like the US. Orban could be as racist and nationalist as he liked since 97% of the country is Magyar (HUngarian) and speaks Hungarian.  There are no large groups of minorities. That is not the US now and in the future. Takeover by someone like Orban appealing to white nationalists has not bee would not be and will be not be a peaceful process.  For US white naitonalists, Hungary is fantasyland.  The late Madeleine Albright, our beloved former secretary of state, tagged him as a fascist in the making in  2019. mostly because of his racism.

The dishonesty and the use of fear of "others" of the Tucker Carlsons of this era, is the claim that Democrats want open borders to get more voters. This is illogical if you give it a minute of thought.  The demographic shifts we are seeing fueling this hate-filled racism are not because of some conspiracy to cause the demographic shift for political gain, It is the birth rate of those already here projected forward.. Immigration only speeds up the timeline  It takes years for even legal immigrants to achieve citizenship and vote. This is a long-term proposition at best and it does not mean such immigrants a decade from now will vote like Democrats.,  Democrats look at alarm now that Hispanics are leaving their camp today, though they are not becoming Republicans, either. More Hispanic Democrats in new poll considering leaving party than Hispanic Republicans | The Hill. The trend is like other immigrant waves that those assimilated into the existing population look to other concerns, including the economy, taxation,   religious, cultural,  and kitchen table issues to inspire their voting. Mass shooters do not stop first to ask if you are here for  400 years, voted for Trump in 2020, or if you arrived yesterday before firing away,  as those in El Paso learned. If you look Hispanic, you are their fair game.  Ginning up fear and loathing of Hispanics and others,, as the right-wing is doing, is no way to win new friends and gain supporters in the future.  It also makes the coming years of these demographic shifts bloody and full of friction with a population searching for a dictator/autocratic strong man to lead them out of such misery.  It has happened before and it is happening now.

Fascism: a warning from Madeleine Albright - Vox   Madeleine Albright on Viktor Orban : fascism is not an ideology; it’s a process for taking and holding power. A fascist is somebody who identifies with one group — usually an aggrieved majority — in opposition to a smaller group. It’s about majority rule without any minority rights. Which is why fascists tend to single out the smaller group as being responsible for or the cause of their grievances.

The important thing is that fascists aren’t actually trying to solve problems; they’re invested in exacerbating problems and deepening the divisions that result from them. They reject the free press and denounce the institutional structures within a society — like Congress or the judiciary.

I’d also add that violence is a crucial element of fascism. Whatever else it is, fascism involves the endorsement and use of violence to achieve political goals and stay in power. It’s a bully with an army, really.  (Her book was written before the violence of Jan.6)

What the 2020 census will reveal about America: Stagnating growth, an aging population, and youthful diversity (brookings.edu)One reason for this is that the white population declines discussed above are more pronounced among the young. Since 2000, the under-18 white population registered absolute population losses. Meanwhile, millennials and their juniors were born during years of higher immigration. In many ways, from the 1980s through the early 2000s, immigrants and their children have contributed to both the growth and diversity of the nation’s younger population—however, more recently, natural increase rather than immigration is the primary source of Latino or Hispanic population growth. This has led to stark generational differences in diversity. About 60% of the U.S. population identifies as white alone; that figure reaches more than 70% for baby boomers and their elders, but only about half for the combined Gen Z and younger populations, with nearly two-fifths of those groups identifying as “Black or brown.”

The force among us that can eventually destroy our nation: white nationalism

These are my worst fears. Those of us who care about a peaceful and prosperous  United States in the future, free of violent coups and hate, and governments that count the votes of everyone to set their policy course, take a look at this article. We have met the enemy, and they reside among us, living in fear that those who are not white will become the minority in the future.  The march of demographics cannot be stopped by the likes of Tucker Carlson, but the end of democratic governance can be stopped by the conflicts which Carlson and Fox News hype.  Carlson's minute-by-minute stoking of hate and fear show that the more he dwells on the aggrievement of those who share the fears of loss of white domination, the higher his ratings soar.  Those ratings are what fuel advertising income for FOX News and Carlson himself. per this published analysis. https://www.businessinsider.com/tucker-carlson-ratings-support-white-nationalism-talking-points-nyt-2022-4

For a future for our children and grandchildren that is peaceful and prosperous, instead of beating the drums of hatred, it is time that these keepers of white nationalism be defeated at the ballot box while the majority today has the ability to do so, and free and fair elections still exist. The future we want will only happen if we start acting now.  Imagine what would have happened if Carlson's predecessor in the 1930s, Father  Coughlin, had become the dominant viewpoint as Hitler had begun the annexation by force and violence pieces of Europe and all of Great Britain.  That is where we are today in 2022 and 2024.   In the words of Rodney King,  " why can't we all just get along?" .  It is that "getting along" that gives us the future we want for generations that follow us. It is in the best interest of white people like me to understand that throughout history, countries devoured by hate among themselves will neither be peaceful nor prosperous. and it is a rot within that eventually destroys the nation itself.   Even in recent times, we need to look no further than the Balkans and the wars of ethnic cleansing in the 1990s to understand what future awaits us if we continue on this course that Carlson channels.

Did Putin miscalculate? updated Feb. 21. April 7, May 8, 2022

Update April 7, 2022, May 8, 2022: Within a few days after the Feb.21 update, Russia invaded.  It was clear Putin had miscalculated, but so had the rest of the world. The common wisdom was that Putin's army would be in Kiev and 'Zelenski would have been taken out in three days.  The Feb. 21 column below missed an important element, the leadership of Zelenski who refused to be evacuated as Russian troops advanced into Ukraine and told the US offer, don't send me transportation, send me weapons. Further rallies were from the Snake Island defenders, who told the Russian warship to go f ...yourself...an icon that became a battle cry of defiance.  /The rest is playing out before our eyes on  television.Russia’s Grave Miscalculation: Ukrainians Would Collaborate - The New York Times (nytimes.com.  We all, Putin included, underestimated the strength of the human spirit to resist tyranny.

Update February 21, 2022 continues. This may have been Putin's epic miscalculation. Over 50 percent of Ukrainians oppose Putin's invasion...and most of those would take up armed opposition or civil demonstrations. Ukrainians were supposed to put their ethnic ties with Russia above national identity and desire to be in the western economic and democratic orbit. In fact, there was a bloodless coup that resulted in the pro-Russian president fleeing to Moscow. and a democratic election of a new president. Putin may have expected Ukrainians would quietly accept a Russian quisling government and Russian troop occupation. Putin was only half right. His problem is where he is half wrong. The opposition was going to be deadly and drawn out as the outgunned Ukrainian military planned to fade into the population and undertake urban guerilla warfare. They have been trained and weaponized for that by the West. In effect, there was going to be a bloody civil war. The question is whether the Russian public has much stomach for that, believing Ukrainians were close ethnic cousins. This is why there is speculation Putin planned to cook up Ukrainian aggression against Russians within and outside Ukraine as an excuse to give Russians a justification and why the body bag count of dead Russian soldiers could damage Putin's political grip in Russia itself. With 100,000 Russian troops on the Ukrainian borders, that Ukraine would attack Russians is a very unbelievable story. The US landing tons of small arms weapons and ammunition for use by pro-western Ukrainians is part of the credible threat that body bags filled with Russian soldiers would be sent back to Russia is a real threat to Putin and as a rational actor, he may be taking into account and his calculation in the timing. It takes time for the effects to be felt and perhaps he thinks he can beat down opposition and consolidate power before his own populace feel the blowback. . The Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan once the maimed and dead soldiers were in critical numbers to overcome their government propaganda to any contrary. That Putin cares about sanctions, no matter how extreme, is doubtful and it would take some time before Russian consumers would feel the pinch. Those massive refugees would result in the Russian invasion is also a slow developing anti-Russian propaganda impact. He may save face by a smaller incursion where the population is more to his liking, formalizing his prior stealth take over Donbas and breaking it from the rest of Ukraine and getting a better land bridge to Crimea. We will see. with a few weeks while frozen ground can give tanks traction. Update Feb. 21: https://www.vox.com/2022/2/21/22944995/russia-vladimir-putin-orders-troops-ukraine-east-donbas /The response from the West will determine whether he gets away with that without triggering massive sanctions and succeeds in taking the whole enchilada.

The original February 7, 2022 posting continues: There is speculation that Putin may have been influenced by the USA's messy withdrawal from Afghanistan, thinking that the America was so weak and lacked resolve or desiring isolationism, that it would not get heavily involved in a Russian military invasion of Ukraine. This is the danger of MAGA. It makes the US look weaker, not greater. We do not know what is in Putin's head, but if he thought the isolationist had won in the US, as evidenced by the messy withdrawal from Afghanistan, the weak response to Russia's military grabs in Georgia, Syria and Crimea, he miscalculated. If Putin pays little for marching into Ukraine and the west does not inflict pain on him for doing so, others will take that as a green light and try it elsewhere such as China with its designs on Taiwan. Serbia and Bosnian Serbs still have hopes the northern half of Bosnia (ethnic cleansed of Muslims and Croatian Catholics in the 1990's civil war) would become part of Greater Serbia and are watching for the intensity of western response to Russia's actions in Ukraine. The MAGA movement period is similar to the America First and isolationist era in the 1930s. The pro-fascist movement in the US gained steam and adherents in spite of FDR's disposition to the contrary. Before TV and and the internet, America had radio and fascist, isolationist media personalities like Father Coughlin, with a large radio following and an anti-Semitic demagogue supporting German fascism. . The 1938–39 deplatforming of Father Coughlin. (slate.com)The Father Coughlin of our era is FOX news and Tucker Carlson. Carlson's spiel is not anti-Semitism, but an admirer of autocracy instead of democracy and an apologist of Putin's rule and expansionism. He ignores the anti-Semitism that tinges these autocrats, especially Viktor Orban of Hungary.. Tucker Carlson Says Ukraine Isn’t Important. These Key GOP Voters Beg to Differ. - POLITICO. Tucker Carlson, Hungary, and the right’s embrace of authoritarianism - Vox   Hitler, maybe have thought, thought the US would be content to remain in Fortress America. Before Pearl Harbor, America stood by while Czechoslovakia's ethnic German Sudetenland province was handed over to Germany, (to get Peace in our Time0, Poland was invaded, Anschluss with Austria was finalized, France and Norway fell to the Germans, Britain was pulverized in the Blitz and the US was asleep at the wheel until December 7th, 1941. One wonders what kind of a country we would have been had not Pearl Harbor happened. It gave FDR the political winds in his back to fight a two-front war as the American public realized that isolationism did not work with airplanes as the new weapon in the sky. The world in 2022 is even more intertwined by trade, alliances, and technology, cyber vulnerability, and nuclear weapons with intercontinental reach than it was then.

These kinds of conflicts do not end well. This reminds me of the horrific Bosnian war of ethnic cleansing in the first half of the-1990s and the death of 100,000 civilians.. Until now, this was the only hot war in Europe since World War II. The Serbs lost their attempt to expand the boundaries to encompass all of their ethnic kinfolks and their president died in the Hague awaiting trial for crimes against humanity. The result is that the current population of Bosn1a, once similar to Colorado's, has decreased from 5 million in 1991, the beginning of the conflict, to 3 million, resulted in massive emigration, is the poorest per capita economy in Europe, still subject to ethnic strife and threatened with renewed violence and break up. My fear is that Ukrainians would devolve into this tragedy. The size of the impact dwarfs the Bosnia conflict. The population of Ukraine is 44 million. and the threat extends to all former Russian satellites bordering it

My interest in this is personal. I also fear for any number of my relatives by blood and marriage and good friends with similar ties in Poland, the Baltics, and the Balkans though less so Hungary and Austria, who have maintained cordial relations with Russia. Even friends with relatives in Germany are nervous about a Russian invasion in their neighborhood. All of them are targets of Putin's desire to reassemble the old Soviet Union boundaries and spheres of influence. They have enjoyed the peace and more prosperity after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I have often written about eastern Europe in this blog, drawing on over 50 years of being married to a remarkable person from the Balkans, studying in post-war Berlin, in seminars on eastern Europe in college, and spending a measurable part of my life there on family visits. My particular interest is Bosna, with close relatives by marriage there, a fascination with its history of cultural conflicts beginning my first visit in 1959. In 2020 I completed a six-year project of humanitarian aid through Rotary, writing, and championing three grants there that brought me physically there and close friendships. Our family business is the importation and distribution of cosmetics to the US from Croatia.

My views of Russia are not frozen in the cold war any more than are Putin's He was the last KGB station chief in Dresden, as the wall came down. Those former satellites have enjoyed peace and increasing prosperity with their alignment with the west since then. They have understood and cherished the freedom of political expression and economic advantages of a freer market society. Putin has replaced Marxist-Leninist doctrine with oligarch capitalism and hyper-nationalism. His methods of governance however are similar to the old USSR, punishing those who challenge his accumulation of wealth, power, and loyalty to him with more finesse and secrecy than the show trials of old. Poison, imprisonment, mysterious assassinations of dissidents are his tools. The breakup of the old Soviet Union he believes was a tragedy and the reassembly of that empire is his stated goal. So far he has been successful in Georgia, Syria, and Crimea. Putin is apparently planning to go "full Stalinist" if he takes over Ukraine by military force. This would be right out of Putin's KGB playbook: "The U.S. has warned the United Nations that it believes Russia has plans to kill large numbers of critics, dissidents and "vulnerable populations" in Ukraine" https://news.yahoo.com/russia-plans-target-dissidents-ukraine-060948378.htm
https://news.yahoo.com/russia-lists-ukrainians-killed-sent-055416138.html "Washington has warned the UN rights chief that Russia has lists of Ukrainians "to be killed or sent to camps" in the event of an invasion, according to a letter... "     If  US intelligence agencies know about this list, hopefully they know who is on it and is warning them.

It is assumed both Russia and the West have more accurate polling, but here is what is public:Poll: Over half of Ukrainians will actively resist Russian invasion (kyivindependent.com) /The pollster is the CNN like news network of India, which does not have a stake in the outcome of any Russian invasion of Ukraine)Every third Ukrainian ready to put up armed resistance to Russians: Study, World News | wionews.com

Replacement theory revisited April 2021

The following report inspired me to repost this  nearly prophetic August 12, 2020 blog posting on  April 11, 2021 when Tucker Carlson of FOX brought into the mainstream a slogan and the racist theory of replacement: Anti-Defamation League Calls on Fox News to Fire Tucker Carlson (businessinsider.com)

I remember Neo-Nazi chants in Charlottesville, "Jews will not replace us". The "replacement" word was picked up by many on the right and applied to Hispanics and immigrants. If this is not white nationalism, I do not know what is. The results: the words from right-wing media...and that includes Fox stars, ..inspired the El Paso shooter who used the same words to justify his murder of 22, targeting in his own words Hispanics. Those who approve or repeat such language are complicit in promoting white nationalism. ..and racism. The results will be the opposite of what they wished.

For those who protest this designation, think what the end result of their words means.  With or without "the invasion" of migrants, the demographic shift of the makeup of America to more brown and black citizens will happen anyway because of projected birth rates. So what is the goal now? Slow it down by scaring migrants off with acts of cruelty or by inspiring angry young men to kill them?

If the fear harbored by Republicans is that the impact of more black and brown citizens voting for Democrats,, the backlash could be much more immediate instead of farther in the future.  Not only are polls showing the important swing voters, suburban women, are more likely to vote for Democrats, because of the Trump administration's racial politics, Hispanic citizens traditionally have a large segment, 20 to 30%, who have voted Republican in past elections and that ratio could change..  The Republican party will for years be known as the party of white nationalists and enemies of Hispanics as a group.  If the RNC's goal is to suppress the growth of Hispanics voting Democrat, this strategy of embracing white nationalism and inspiring racism will backfire long term because even those Hispanics who are already citizens will be swept up in the hatred of them because of their color, race, name, and background regardless of their political philosophy or citizenship status. If the GOP fears a high turnout of African-Americans and Hispanics in 2020, they are doing all in their power to increase the turnout of those voices and voters they have attempted to suppress. It is a lesson they should have learned in the 2018 midterms. The historic turnout of minority voters turned red districts blue, including Colorado's 6th Congressional District and contributed to the House of Representatives flipping to blue.
