Update 3/4/2025: Here's where Trump's deal with Putin stands: Trump aligns foreign policy with Putin. that so far has resulted in no deal on Ukraine, no peace deal, no rare earth deal, and kissing the Atlantic alliance with Europe goodbye as it goes its own way. US is now alone in the world with only allies, the Axis of Evil, Russia, China, and Iran, none of whom support US security interests..  Here's what Putin got: the breakup of the Atlantic alliance and possibly NATO itself, the US disarms its cyber-attacks and counter to Russia, giving them free access to sabotage US cyber, internet, and social media,and elections.. Russia gets all sanctions against them levied by the US removed, Russia gets its spy networks in the US as all embassies and consulates are reopened. 

The cease fire or agreement on mineral rights may still happen as Zelensky seems to be more flexible and is not requesting a security agreement as a condition.  However, in the meantime, the alliance with Russia is still one sided, and dangerous to US national security. That alliance with Russia is still a rotten deal.  Zelenski today:"We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and truce in the sky — ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure — and truce in the sea immediately if Russia will do the same. Trump's error is assuming Ukraine has no other alternatives, so he had them over the barrel. With the elections in Germany resulting in a coalition of a centrist government and a coalition of the left and right of center, the path is cleared for Europe to give security guarantees and defend Ukraine's sovereignty independent of the US. France has already done so.

If Trump persists, he will be left with no deal, no peace in our times, and the fall out of disgust of his alliance with Russia, even the failure of capitulation and to

Update: 2/28/2025   I just witnessed a s...t show on a presser with Zelensky and Trump with JD Vance on the attack. The upshot of Trump/Vance "Be grateful, Zelensky, we are taking your mineral rights with no guarantee of your security, and you have no choice but to agree with us." That Zelensky sat through the most disgusting show of an Oval Office presser in the history of the US was a remarkable show of self-restraint. Vance and Trump's personal attack.., bringing up dirt stretching back to Hunter Biden and impeachment resorting extortion attempt, was just plain ugly and made uglier with the parting words, "If you don't say you are grateful, " your country is finished," and we will have WWIII.  My guess is that the nasty presser will only infuriate and inspire Europe to support Ukraine and guarantee its survival, and the US will be left flapping its mouth like a parrot of Russian propaganda and without rights to Ukraine's minerals. Trump's negotiating strategy is the art of the no deal. Not only did he give away NATO and 20% of Ukraine's territory in advance of beginning negotiations with Russia, he also tried to extort from Ukraine their natural resources that had a value of 4 times what the US has already contributed to Ukraine. In return, what does Ukraine get: no security guarantees, loss of 20% of its territory, and no way to stop further Russian aggression without outside help. Ukraine just said thanks, but no thanks.

With President Biden now out of the race, the torch has been passed to Kamala Harris today. I hope the other wannabes out there comply now; disavow any more ambition to take a fight to the DNC convention...and let's get the show on the road.

 Harris has two strikes against her: She is partially Black and a woman. She has two assets in particular on her behalf: She is partially Black, and she is a woman....the perfect counter to a racist MAGA and a hyper-masculine Hulk Hogan/ Trump chest-thumping narcissism of the GOP candidate.    Democrats almost elected a woman before, and they accepted and won with Obama..  Go Kamala, and finish the job Joe Biden started, to save us from Trump, who showed his racism so many times, from the Golden Escalator to Charlottesville, and now wants to be a dictator on day one.  Biden could have had the choice to continue, but to finish the job he set out to do, he made the greatest sacrifice a politician could make.  He is not only a great president, he is a great man.

It should be crystal clear to those not in the Trump core in America, by Trump's own twisted definition, autocracy (dictatorship on day one) is not a democracy, yet that is what he is claiming when at a recent rally post-assassination attempt; he "took a bullet for democracy." By making America as weak as it was in the 1930s, America will not be as ""great again. "That decade was when its isolationists led to adversaries' miscalculations about America's will to resist, and they attacked the US. This Trump mantra is upside-down crazy talk, and it takes low-information voters to swallow this as the gospel truth. When it finally gets its act together, the Democratic party has plenty of ammunition to make its case, but it needs to sharpen its messaging and get in the MAGA's face to succeed. So far, they have failed to counter outrageous propaganda messages by Trump. 

Here's the case Democrats can make, and they need to task their wordsmiths to do it.

As he speaks, Trmp's party already has minions in place to overturn the November 2024 election should he lose the electoral vote (the most fundamental element of democracy: rule by the people) using pre-positioned loyal election officials and even political violence. (This is not  election integrity, but the opposite by election administration manipulation ) The blueprint for becoming an autocrat is in black and white in Project 2025, turning the executive branch and 50 thousand federal employees staffed by ideologues into a spoils system demanding all adhere to an ideology instead of allegiance to the rule of law and the Constitution. Trump tried that through Schedule F when he was in office but was stopped by staff. Now, his staff will be yes men in another term. Names have already been taken, and replacements have been applied and verified as true to their allegiance to the Heritage Foundation ideology.  Trump is beginning to understand how obnoxious Project 2025 is and trying to distance himself. He needs to be forced to tell just what part of Project 2025 he does not support. He should not be allowed to weasel out with a blanket "Well, it is radical and parts unnamed I disagree with").

 Especially damning are those parts in Project 2025 and elsewhere. Trump tried before and failed, but now can do it and succeed thanks to the Supreme Court's presidential immunity gift and loyalist appointments. Among them is putting Schedule F on steroids to replace civil servants with loyalists to the Project 2025 manifesto.  Trump has a history of political violence regarding the January 6 riots by "patriots" he summoned to the Capitol;   his demand of generals to conduct armed active military suppression of demonstrations (Lafayetttte Square, later orating the generals should be executed for that): calling neo-Nazi's fine people (Charlottesville); and his attempt to force and scare Pence to join in the fake electors' scheme.

Trump opines that America is a failure, ignoring that America leads the world under Biden/Harris in the economy's recovery from Covid and has formulated the strongest alliances since the end of World War II.  Instead, he sought a country that would join with Russia and dance to its tune on Ukraine, claiming peace in our time then (just as Chamberlain gave away Czechoslovakia in 1937. Like then, there is a determined aggressor to establish a past greatness opening and publicly stated of Germany then and to establish Russia's boundaries of the old USSR now) and to destroy the mutual defense assistance to and from allies. Not only does this mimic the actions leading to US involvement in WWII, it even parrots the title of the 1930s isolationists, American First. Trump's economic policies also echo the mistakes and policies of the 1930s. In the 1930s, tariffs were raised on imports, which kicked the Depression into high gear. Trump's plan to raise tariffs on all imports across the board, as was tried then, Per 16 Nobel laureate economists, in modern times, would cause inflation and recession. Like in the 1930s, right-wingers fought tooth and nail against supporting access to health care and social security and weakening them both in the Project 2025 vision. Like in the 1930s, the favored group in governance and policy were racially white, reflecting the faces raised at GOP conventions and Trump rallies.   Like in the 1930's, women are to be relegated to subservient status and no control over their own health decisions, or even birth control,  both in the provisions of Project 2025 (ideal family: women at home, men working, etc) and in his political party, as well as in his VP pick of JD Vance, who says even abused women should stay in their marriage and take the beatings.

Why does Trump appeal to voters with less than a college degree?

There is a reason Trump's demographic appeals to the least educated in this country. It is easier to manipulate and lie to the uneducated.  Here are some examples of why: We have been there before with isolationism and fascism and appeasement. Trump touts all three. These were failures then 90 years ago and will be failures in the future. Education is a substitute for institutional memory that few alive have from 80 to 90 years ago.. Fascism destroyed Germany and Italy. Isolationism and appeasement only work when there are no aggressive adversaries. The US and British tried and it resulted in WW II. We have it now with Russia and China who are aggressive adversaries. To them, appeasement and boot-licking is the sign of weakness, not alliances, to be taken advantage of. 

 I am on a private Facebook page that is a rare interface with both Trump voters and progressives.  It is entitled Political Debate and Discussion.  Neither happens because the Trump supporters simply post meme bombs instead of discussing and debating.  Dropping a clever phrase of a meme and then thinking they have dropped the mike, and therefore, their truth is enough to win an argument, is not debate or discussion. It is simply meme and insult hurling.  The meme that got me this morning came from a Trump supporter (identified by other frequent FB postings), basically calling the educated from Ivy League schools dumb for not agreeing with them on issues. It is the old "anti-pointy-headed" name-calling that has proved to be helpful in getting the vote of the less educated ever since Adlai Stevenson lost in the 1950s when I first became aware of politics. He was just too intellectual. Trump depends on less schooled and educated for his support.  Self-interest usually underlies voters more than another element in motivating votes, which is my observation.  However, there is room for rational discussion, particularly on public policy issues, if not on cultural, religious, and racial motivation.  One of the greatest dividers in our current political climate is how much education a voter has, whether they have a college degree or not, if they are racially identified as white. 

In college, you learn more about the past so you do not repeat the failures and mistakes of others, and you learn there are also two sides to most contentious issues and you can make comparisons and contrasts. Granted, it is so much easier to reproduce a meme and share it. It saves a person from learning about data and evidence. Education changes perspectives and gives a realization that things are not always as simple as they seem and that there may be unintended consequences.

But Trump’s share of the vote among this group – who represented 42% of the total electorate this year – was nearly identical to his vote share in 2016 (65%). Religious affiliation is another large determinant influencing voters' decisions besides race that overwhelms political critical thinking. It did not used to be that way. I am a white Christian protestant who belongs to a mainstream traditional church, and sometimes I wonder where some of the theology that has nothing to do with the bible I read comes from.  I grew up in the "bible belt," where the goal was to get more believers in faith preached in a particular denomination.. Now it has become, get more Trump supporters because he is the second coming.  So, I listen.

date 2/( 23/2024) Plan B: Should Speaker Johnson beat down a movement to force him to bring Ukraine aid to the floor, because he knows he would lose, if that fails, there may be a plan B to support Ukraine. While this concept was applied to post-Ukraine, assuming it survives this conflict, I wonder if it could be applied to funding military aid. Use of Russian treasure held in Western banks could be tapped. Post-conflict reconstruction was discussed recently by Fareed Zakaria on CNN. Western Nations holding Russian funds should freeze them and set up a reconstruction fund for Ukraine, not only funding Ukrainians from Russian money but also providing a reconstruction fund kept out of the hands of Russia. I am not sure of the legality of this but after I wrote this, I heard the former ambassador to Russia on MSNBC suggest this. He carries enormous weight. We will know the week of Feb. 25 when the House returns to work. and the discharge petition forces Mike Johnson to bring to a vote. Update Feb 25.: on MSNBC review I heard an interview I missed .. Rep Jim Hines believes that will be the ultimate solution. The only question is whether to take the interest of the 300 billion Western banks have in Russia or the principle. If the bulk of it is in Swiss banks, that will be a difficult job, but for the first time in history, the Swiss have been supporting one of the combatants, Ukraine and NATO, instead of being neutral.

 Not voting for all four elements makes MAGA look like national security is not in crisis and a hostage to Trump's political strategy to keep the chaos going so only he can fix it if he ever gets in the White House again so he can stop aid to Ukraine and months more of border crisis will be dumped in his lap, having passed the opportunity to accept Biden's acceptance of most of the border hawks wanted. The non-MAGA public is not as naive as Trump thinks and wonders what happened to the "crisis"? The crisis is Trump himself.  Trump is leading MAGA down a primrose path of FOP , Friends of Putin, as Putin just sits until Trump gets into office.  and hands over world leadership to Putin himself to call the tune to which America must dance.  Trump's boasting of his negotiation skills simply plans just to capitulate to their aggressions, making us a loser by choice.

Of course, for Trump it damages his strategy by taking away his main pitch for being president, , anti-immigrants and suppression of "others", dating from birtherism and coming down the golden escalator to save us from brown immigrants who were" murderers and rapists" and the Muslim ban.. Trump had four years to come up with his own solution at the border and failed to do it. If elected again, Democrats can consider any deal "dead on arrival" too,in return, if they control one house of Congress. Europe uses the parliamentary system, requiring coalition building among a variety of political parties. The US depends on the coalitions to be developed within their two-party system. However, there is now talk with a coalition of moderates of both parties to join together and break the roadblock to the stubborn inability of the GOP members of Congress able to agree on a House Speaker.  Their weak position is due to the fact that 4 votes could determine the outcome of a floor vote.  For the first time, the word "coalition" (enough Democrats vote with enough GOP congressmen) is a possibility. In the vote to oust McCarthy, many called depending on some bi-partisan Democrats to be treasonous or worse. McCarthy neither asked for Democrat support and doubled down on a last minute  appeal to the right wing on media.  Jim Himes (D-CT) on Morning Joe (MSNBC) this morning said that the current GOP caucus vote leader who is 50 votes short, Jim Jordan, would not receive any Democratic votes since he was an election denier and Jan. 6 stop-the-count supporter and against more aid to Ukraine. However, if the GOP put forth a more centrist nomination, they would be open to providing Democratic votes to give the moderate the needed votes. However, that was a couple of weeks away if a voterama in the House fails to get Jordon over the finish line.

One of those voting against Scalese and Jordan is Ken Buck (R-CO), both because of election denialism and failure to support Ukraine.   Could he be part of the coalition vote later if the voterama does not break the stalemate? Next speaker must publicly support 2020 election results, Rep. US voters still prefer democracy over a dictatorship (autocracy). That should be comforting. The House GOP is sitll controlledd by  Trump and a hard core minority.  Trump has made it clear he is for Jordan .  Jordan represents chaos and discord like his mentors. Jordan's his record as a legislator has been an oral bomb thower and attack dog for the right wing and in January 6 hearings and the Biden "crime family". I have not seen a poll that delves into younger voter skepticism of democracy.  My question, what do they want instead? It appears that the skepticism among gen z is that democracy has failed to address their agenda on specific public policy issues, but if anything, they want the government to do more. The USA is less than 60% racially white, and in a few years, that demographic trend will see the current racial minority become the majority. The only way to make the US a white e Christian nation is to suppress and cow the increasingly larger minority. In a multi-racial society, implementing the Orban model would make chaos look like mild reaction.
