The only power left to stop Trump’s march to become a dictator is us…vote Nov. 3 to turn Congress blue. A MAGA congressman has just introduced a bill to give him a third term by a constitutional amendment. Trump's ban of non-loyal (to him)press from the White House is also one more step toward the end of democracy to be replaced by rule of one. person..

Dictator Trump? It appears his goal: ban unfriendly media....and a third term?

Orban's defeat is a win for US pro Democracy movements
There are lessons to be learned, but Orban's defeat is a boost to pro-democracy movements and inspires efforts underway in the US to restore the kind of democracy we once had.
After 16 years, the people of Hungary had had enough of autocracy. It took 16 years for the grassroots to get around Viktor Orban's total control of the media and a pro-Russian foreign policy. What does this mean for America's resistance to a political party and MAGA's attempt to establish a unitary form of government to replace the Constitutional constraints against an all-powerful executive branch chief?
There are some lessons to learn from Hungary's experience. So enamored has MAGA been of the "strong leader" unitary model for political domination that the powerful Conservative Political Action PAC (CPAC) has held meetings in Hungary, and Orban has been a featured speaker at their conventions. Much of the thrust of an Orban-type autocracy was also part of the plan to de facto turn the US into their one-party rule by a concerted effort to replace the federal government's rank and file with loyalists to Trump, white Christian ideologues, and wealthy cronies..They succeeded without rewriting the Constitution by putting the authors and advocates of Project 2025 in charge of personnel and appointments and in the White House staff itself with the election of Trump in 2024 to a second term..
The Achilles heel of autocracies is corruption. Rule by one person or a small group enables corruption because it removes checks on the avarice, greed, and pocket-stuffing of the rich and fawning supporters and cronies. Such political and governmental power in one hand enables a leader to neglect the financial well-being of even those they purport to support. It is felt by the masses when the autocrat has priorities other than those he governs, from concerns about the cost of living to the negative impact on their own lives of foreign military adventurism, or being aligned with another similar autocracy, like Putin's. Hungary's standard of living, once comfortable, had declined under Orban, making it one of the poorest countries in Europe. Overt and unchecked corruption had become the signature of the Orban regime. https://www.princetonpoliticalreview.org/international-news/viktor-orbns-hungary-corruption-repression-amp-democratic-backsliding. This may also sound familiar to observers of Trump 1 and II.
It is emerging as an awareness in the US of it happening here, to some extent. But there is also a growing realization that autocrats think they can get away with ignoring promises to make life more affordable, as their leaders feather their own nests with wealth and power. This awareness is reflected in plunging approval ratings for Trump and his unpopular public policies.
The link of who controls the power, the people or an autocrat who is self-promoting and self-indulging, is this: Autocracy enables the needs of the rank and file citizens to be ignored. Trump is acting like one who assumes he has already seized the reins of the federal government and he can get away with anything, including enriching himself and his family members while using his power to punish and suppress any opposition.
The good news coming from Hungary for those who want to restore the power. of Congress and bolster the judiciary to check the corrupt and vengeful can inspire the grassroots and populace to rise up without violence and restore the democratic antidote. Hungary just did it. It just takes a long time for it to happen; 16 years in Hungary.(In America, the time frame has been more like a year or two for CPAC and Project 2025 to establish an Orban-type rule.) For Hungarians, it took a grassroots, door-to-door effort by a nation that once was prosperous and had seen its standard of living decline as the corruption of the rulers became more evident despite media control.
https://mufticforumblog.blogspot.com/2026/02/russell-vought-and-trump-pulling.htmlcontrol. It was a merging of an Individual NO KINGS-type movement and the organization of citizens through word of mouth and door-to-door.
We have a template for similar revolts in the US. It was Minneapolis and a citizens' revolt against ICE. The citizens were inspired to act as they did because it was not just an argument over legal theory but a revolt against the methods ICE used that trampled on the human and civil rights of all immigrants. and thenselves. It was a matter of moral outrage and the unfairness of the treatment of all residents, regardless of race, religion, or immigration status. Its citizens had had enough of the fascist type paramilitary actions of ICE and organized in many ways, using many techniques to be successful.
What is also evident with Orban's defeat is that it is easier to nip a wannabe autocracy in the bud before it seizes more control of the reins of government, because once in control, it is much harder to effect regime change. It takes time and mass realizations by citizens that they have been played.

Democracy in context: abstract vs reality. Messaging again.
The defenders of democracy as we have known it for 250 years face challenges. It is how to explain an abstract political science term to those who do not think in the abstract, but have a hard time understanding how it relates to the reality of the lives they are living now. It is a messaging problem that Democrats have not yet learned how to fix. How do you get it across that a King does away with rights you may need sometime? Some ideas. Just calling Trump a King ( a gentler stand-in term for autocracy, dictatorship, or fascism) or invoking due process and the rule of law, or protecting an independent judiciary, is not enough. These terms must be related to the experiences people are having now. The opportunity is there even in the two major reasons he won the last election: immigration and reversing high prices (the economy).
Update 5/2/2025 My own seat of the pants guess has been that about half of Americans view Trump as a danger to democracy and about half want Trump to have more power to accomplish the goals of which they approve. A recent poll however, shows that more than a majority , 54% of Americans see him as a dangerous dictator. Of course, the divide is still heavily partisan, but it shows a shift that some who voted for him in November 2024 are getting the message that Trump is indeed a danger to democracy. Most Americans Describe Donald Trump as 'Dangerous Dictator'—New Poll - Newsweek
Continuing with the original post
One blowback from an out-of-control president acting like a King is easy to bring down to reality. Trump has his own agenda that is more important than yours that was to bring down the cost of groceries and gas at the pump. Not only that, he is doing things that you did not vote for: sabotaging social security and veterans' benefits and protections against being ripped off by lenders.
The real impact of Trump's policies is already being realized by many, but so far, it is a matter of fear about what may happen: The real experience that prices will go up, shelves will be empty, has not even been felt yet. Voters are beginning to grasp t that this will happen and Trump seems not tocare. That explains why his favorability is polling lower. Not only have prices not been rolled back, but they understand they may even get higher if he continues as he is doing now. So what. Trump knows he does not have to face voters again. So sorry, he thinks, he has other fish to fry like tariffs and tax policy, and in time, he will get back to you, he promises and promises and promises. Tariffs will be good for you in the meantime. The lesson to learn from this: Rule by what people want is not the same as what Trump wants in this case. You elected him, but now he is off on his own agenda that hurts you. That is the consequence of having a King,(a strong leader), who is focused on giving himself more power. It is the opposite of rule by what the people want expressed through their representatives in Washington. The rule of, by, and for the people is the fundamental meaning of "democracy". People should have the power to set priorities and influence their execution by the government. Rule by a strong leader who thinks he can do what he wants is the opposite.
The issue of immigration is much more difficult to deal with than the realities of the economy. Most ordinary citizens do not think in abstract legal terms or think about unintended consequences that could hurt them if due process protections did not exist. When they hear warnings that such and such will happen if, for example, due process, the rule of law, and an independent judiciary are replaced by a strong leader who will ignore or even destroy such niceties, so what? It sounds like political fear-mongering, more political noise, so it is dismissed as just that. That stuff is standing in the way of what they voted for Trump to do on immigration, right?
What does, for example, the treatment of Abrego Garcia have to do with non-immigrant lives or them as citizens?. That's too bad, or he had it coming to him. Right? What is at stake is far larger than the fate of an undesirable resident of our country. You are not one of those, so why care? In short: If no one enforces those rights and protections, they are as good as useless, whether you are a citizen or are in this country with or without documents. Imagine if you are wrongfully charged with, say tax evasion, or a crime you did not commit. You had better hope you still have the right to your day in court, that the judge is not beholden to the president to rule in his favor, and that you can be fairly treated to defend yourself. That is what due process, the rule of law, and an independent judiciary mean... they can protect you from unfair treatment by a government. However, if the president believes it is in his interest to ignore all of those niceties, and no one stops him, your rights can also be ignored and not enforced on your behalf and anyone else you care about, because the king has already gotten away with it before, and he can do it again in yours or others cases.
(I am using the accusatory "you" but I apologize. I am a political science major who has a professional lifetime of putting democracy into practice, advocating for people to use it to solve their problems, and explaining it to a wide variety of people, as an author, talk show host, and election commissioner. I have the unique experience of seeing firsthand what it is to live like an ordinary person in a dictatorship. I have a sense of urgency. It is not abstract to me; it is reality. Democracy has never been questioned or attacked like this before, so our constitutional democracy now needs so much defending. We have been taking our individual rights for granted. We as a nation are just beginning to understand that we could lose them and what that means.)

If we have already lost our democracy, can we get it back?
If we have lost our democracy, can we get it back? Preserving and restoration of democracy is not an effective pitch to motivate voters. We just got a lesson in that. In fact, at the risk of stating the obvious, what works is understanding and illustrating what voters feel in their lives and directing messaging to their real-life concerns. If democracy is mentioned, it should be that democracy will and can be the best vehicle to reflect and fix the problems important to "ordinary people" rather than an out-of-control kleptocracy and corruption of a Trump autocracy.
The problem is that in 2024, the fear of the loss of democracy was not taken seriously, not understood, nor urgent, and not relevant to everyday life, in spite of the Democrats making Trump's threat to democracy a major campaign issue. Experience is the best teacher if the connection between who and what is at fault can be made and voters are made aware of how they have been hurt. If and when Trump fails to deliver on such promises as rolling back grocery prices, keeping gas at the pump affordable, stopping inflation, and making health care and general living more affordable, will those swing voters, the non-racist motivated ones, be receptive to the message and will the pendulum swing the other way. The trust in Trump, that whatever he does that is good for him is good for you and me too, is a bond that needs to be broken. Trump will continue to win the race-sensitive part of the MAGA block with his anti-DEI, Project 2025 White nationalist agenda, and cruel immigration policies.
That strategy should not be that difficult to do because Trump has already reneged on many of those promises. Blame can also be pinned on Trump's makeup of his administration. How is peppering leadership in his administration with "billionaire bros" whose goals are feathering their own nests and millionaires who have never had to live on a budget and believe in the fantasy of trickle-down wealth to sell, promise, and placate the middle and lower rungs on the economic laddder? The Democrats have been lousy at messaging this, and now, not only does their leadership have to improve, but getting the message will be even harder as the media delivering is also cowed by fear and threats of revenge and retribution and willing to give a public platform for lies, propaganda, and disinformation.
Update: 1 14 2025 In reaction to rumors that Musk is considering buying TikTok and Zuckerberg caved into Trump and stopped fact-checking on Facebook, this is very important; non-profit media is launching an effort to keep social media out of the hands of billionaires. In the meantime, like never before, social media should be treated as people's opinions but not as a source of credible facts and data. My policy is to list the sources of my facts and data cite and what is influencing my opinions on my blog or on social media postings. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/a-30-million-campaign-to-free-social-media-from-billionaire-control-is-now-underway/
The first crack will be the midterms to take advantage of Trump's failures to keep campaign promises before he can consolidate autocratic control and to take aim at the billionaire bros. The Senate and House must become blue to restore the check on an administration ruling by edict and executive orders, thumbing their noses at the rule of law.
That Trump is now immune from abiding by the rules of law while engaged in his official acts, courtesy of his supreme court. That could be fixed by amending the constitution. However, the barriers to amending the constitution are long-term and long-lasting and would not affect Trump's power in this second term. Reminder: n amendment has to be proposed, and it would take super majorities in the House and Senate, or 34 state legislatures would have to call for a convention to propose and then 38 state legislatures or special conventions to approve. Most amendments took decades of effort to succeed. The harm done by the Supreme Court's immunity gift to Trump is profound and nearly impossible to reverse.

How Project 2025 could turn the US into a fascist dictatorship
If Project 2025 is the blueprint and Trump is the vessel that activates the plan, his signature pen could begin the process of morphing our country into a fascist dictatorship of white Christian nationalists. In the name of educating the public about Project 2025, House Democrats will hold hearings. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/09/19/house-democrats-plan-multimedia-project-2025-hearing/
Update 10/11/2024: Former Joint Chief General Mark Mlley calls Trump "fascist to the core"https://thehill.com/policy/defense/4929487-trump-dangerous-milley-woodward/
There is one candidate in the race for the White House, Donald Trump, who openly said he aspires to be a "dictator on day one" . He has tried to distance himself from Project 2025 with "I did not read it". He does not have to read it to benefit his lust to be a dictator. It could happen if he spent his first day in office signing piles of executive orders and appointments supplied by Project 2025. If Trump were to follow Project 2025 and execute their scheme for taking over the executive branch in 180 days, he could turn the executive branch into the vehicle to use the power of fear and retribution to control the other two branches and the election process and ignore civil rights protections. He attempted all of these actions in his first term, but legal constraints and staff stood in his way. Project 2025 has now given Trump the method and the means to do it using his "official duties." The Supreme Court has granted him immunity from criminal prosecution when engaged in "official duties." Trump has already struck fear into what was once the Republican Party is an example of how he uses fear and threats to operate. He attempted to get the active military to put down demonstrators, and he promised political violence and retribution, using the DOJ to launch investigations of his opponents, whether there was probable cause or not. He had already advocated executing generals who did not obey his orders even when they violated the Constitution.. advocating and executing disobedience generals delicensing opposition media.
Trump has had a history of drawing on Nazi terminology to support his rhetoric: While this has been extensively covered by the median, as a memory refresher, read this from ABC News ttps://abcnews.go.com/Politics/donald-trumps-history-adolf-hitler-nazi-writings-analysis/
Vance's attack on women who are childless cat women and Huckabee Sanders as women who do not have their own children as not humble are echoes of a bygone era where women knew their place, and it was not out in politics. I saw this as a backhanded misogynistic slur, a code, and way to put Harris in her place and to explain why she is an uppity woman in a man's world. This is part of their strategy to appeal to their masculine base.
The definition of terms helps to put us on the same page. Here are mine: What is a fascist, what is a democracy, and what is a dictator/autocrat? These are bare-bones, simplistic definitions, but the discussion worth having is about which candidate fits one or the other more closely or aspires to fit the definition.
FASCISM has many definitions, but most overlap. From Merriam-Webster: "a ", movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascists) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and advocates a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition. "From the Cambrdge dictionary: " a political system based on a very powerful leader, state control of social and economic life, and extreme pride in country and race, with no expression of political disagreement allowed. "
COMMUNISM: I picked this definition from the National Geographic because it was aimed at grades 5-8."Communism is a form of government most closely associated with the ideas of Karl Marx, which he outlined in The Communist Manifesto. Communism is based on the goal of eliminating socioeconomic class struggles by creating a classless society in which everyone shares the benefits of labor and the state controls all property and wealth."What's the difference between communism and fascism. This from Quizlet is the one that comes closest to mine: "Two similarities between fascism and communism are that they both imposed totalitarian governments and both claimed to rule in the national interests. One difference between the two is that communists sought world revolution while fascists pursued nationalism. Another difference is that communist supporters were the urban working class, while fascist supporters were business leaders, wealthy landowners, and the lower middle class."
DICTATORSHIP From Cambridge:
"Dictatorship is a form of government in which one person or a small group possesses absolute
power without effective constitutional limitations. ....
[
AUTOCRACY: from Cambridge: "government by a single person or small group that has unlimited power or authority " My observation: This differs only from dictatorship because it is the rule of a person, not of a group.

Trump's psyche tricks depend on voters' ignorance to succeed.
Aside from the substance of whatever is a fascist, watching this exchange over the past couple of years, "You are a fascist, no you are one", is common. Variations of this are new ones hurled by Trump at Harris," You are a communist and fascist" (as yet not been answered by Harris ). These kinds of exchanges remind me of the old schoolyard taunts: Your mother is a (fill in the blanks)...., no your mother is one..... Actually, it is an old psychological trick: https://www.kindersleysocial.ca/webarchive/psychological-tactics-at-work/ Karl Marx stated it so clearly: "Accuse your enemy of what you are doing as you are doing it to create confusion." Some call this "projection", branding others for what you have been criticized for being. Let's face it, it's still going on, and it works for Trump.
Trump's psyche tricks depend on ignorance to succeed. Somewhere along the line, many in the US fall for such mind games because they somehow forgot or never learned the definition of the words being thrown around. While both sides practice the taunts, Trump has made this psyche trick his standard operating procedure to deflect criticism.
What has also happened is that terms are not defined but just connected to an example as if it is a mike dop " You are like Hitler,";" You are like the old communists,"; "You want to be a dictator like Putin, etc.".... all geared to rile up the other side or to buck up your own. Trump himself is responsible for the Hitler analogy with his frequent invoking of terms and words found in Nazi writings. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/donald-trumps-history-adolf-hitler-nazi-writings-analysis
The best defense against falling for the trick is to educate yourself about words loosely used in taunts in the 2024 campaign terms ( fascism, communism, democracy, dictatorship, autocracy). Then, you can see what "shoe fits." The best sources of definitions are supplied by those who do not have a horse on which they are betting in this race and are stated in clear, simple English. Dictionaries are good at this. They lack any shades of gray and " yes, buts," but they provide an agreed-upon yardstick against which you can measure and make a case for how what you believe fits in.
DICTATORSHIP From Cambridge:
"Dictatorship is a form of government in which one person or a small group possesses absolute
power without effective constitutional limitations. ....Dictators usually resort to force or fraud to
gain despotic political power, which they maintain through the use of intimidation, terror, and
the suppression of basic civil liberties. They may also employ techniques of mass propaganda in
order to sustain their public support"
AUTOCRACY: from Cambridge: "government by a single person or small group that has unlimited power or authority " My observation: This differs only from dictatorship because it is the rule of a person, not of a group.
If Project 2025 is the blueprint and Trump is only the vessel that activates the plan, this could morph our country into a dictatorship of white Christian nationalists. What kind of country do we want to live in?The fundamental decision facing 2024 voters. Messaging again.
What are the most fundamental differences between Biden and Trump? Voters must ask themselves what kind of country they want to live in for the coming years. The contrast is stark and simple. If Biden can win, the messaging must be just as stark and simple. It is about messaging. again. Biden's supporters are mostly college-educated, so they get it because democracy is not a simple concept, and histories and conflicting values are not simple either, and they get that. Some may still understand that in the long term, the rule of law, instead of the rule of a strong man, is worth keeping, and they appreciate the degree of fairness the rule of law provides, but they are still weighing their decisions. They must ask themselves: "What kind of a country do they want to live in?" The answer may lie in being asked to imagine what it would be like to live in a dictatorship.
The urgency of the problem I see is that too many have swallowed the" dictator is a good thing" pill. This is the reason such an issue must be addressed now and effectively. They may think it advances their cause, but they are dangerous fools. One test: ask them to compare those lining up at the border to immigrate to Hungary, Russia, Turkey, North Korea, and Venezuela, fleeing dictator-run countries with the numbers trying to get into the US. That may be bad news to the same MAGA types, but it should also be a warning about how foolish they are about Trump's playing dulcet tunes to which he wants them to dance.
Maddow Blog | Poll: Too many GOP voters back authoritarian vision under Trump (msn.com)
The fence-sitters are the ones who most need to hear this message in sharp, digestible terms. Others may get it but think their personal interest lies in tax breaks, as big donors have shown recently. They may think Trump has personality quirks and dreams of dictatorships, but their pocketbooks and lust for more r are more important. Besides, Trump would not dare do what he openly promises to do, would he?
One approach would be to state the value of democracy in terms of "imagine a dictatorship" and what it means to be treated unfairly in everyday life. There are plenty of examples of how they work in today's world. Trump's words or deeds warrant using that as an example that amplifies the contrast of violence and turmoil with the rule and observance of the rule of law. Domestic tranquility is not a goal in a dictatorship unless dissent crushed by the dictator himself. Not only is it who is governed by whom in theory a risk, but it is by it is who wields the violent or threat of vilence big stick without any checks and balances at risk.Trump proposes to use the active military to put down demonstrations to which he objects. Fairness also is not the goal or the standard.Trump proposes to use the Department of Justice to target his political enemies with a campaign of revenge and retribution. Instead, the standard is what helps the "great leader"?Trump lusts over the power of "strong men" from Russia, China, North Korea, Turkey, and Hungary who operate that way. He believes he is immune from obeying any law. He has worked toward becoming one in the past; he promises to become one in the future if he wins in 2024.
Is that the kind of country you want to live in? Those seeking fairness need not apply to a government dominated by those who serve the big guy, the bos?. That's the way it worked in the land of Jim Crow of my youth, or even the political system in Chicago in the 1950s I saw when I went to college there. I may have been a young white girl, but I recognized and revolted against unfairness when I saw it. Trump's message is that he knows who our enemies are and defines enemies as enemies blocking his power, not necarily those who are yours or mine. His power is based on enforced loyalty to him, by fear or the carrots of tempting ambition, and he insists he is is immune from prosecution for violating and ignoring laws, even before, during, and after he was in office, to this day. Rule of law means little when applied to him; use of law enforcement for him is just another weapon to use on his behalf.
In a government led by a strong man, a dictator, the rule of law is subverted and used as a tool to advance the dictator's power and is not worth much more than the paper it is written on. That is how the "judicial system" works in an autocracy or dictatorship like Putin's or even in the less violent Hungary. All those on the bench are there because of their loyalty to the "strong leader." We saw how it works in Russia in the case of detained American sports stars and dancers, journalists, and Navalny. Is this the government you want to live in?
A word about the rule of law. Why is that such a big deal? Imagine a football game without referees and officials on the field. These days, video replays are respected as a basis for appeals. That is what the judicial system provides, not only to provide the most element of fairness based on rules that apply to both sides in a game but to protect the safety of the players or litigants in a sport or a court action that can be brutal. In the judicial system, the defendants and the prosecutions have rights and responsibilities that are rules or laws all agree on or swear to in advance. The rules in advance in a democracy are set in fair and free elections of legislatures and often enforcement is delegated to the executive branch to "faithfully execute" them. That means those in charge of enforcement should their duty to abide by them, too. Don't like the rules? If elections are still considered fair and free enough in a democracy, you can change it by voting. There will always be those who are in the minority, but in current dictatorships, 87% seem always to vote for the big guy. That is no coincidence.
Think the system is already intolerably unfair to voters? The voting system did not work for them in 2020, so the attempted coup on January 6 was justified, or taking control of the voting system by Trump loyalists and getting revenge on opponents in 2024 is also justified? They are dug into their fantasy world.. After four years of intense trying, no evidence or court decisions emerged to produce any proof that enough irregularities happened to change the result. Those clinging to that belie are also beyond reason.
Overwhelmed by those invoking "law and order" or the other term, "the rule of law."? These have become cliches or part of word salads pitched by opposing sides. What do those terms really mean? The rule of law isn't always pretty or flawless. Still, it is far better than the alternative when the judges are not bound in reality but not publicly spoken in the open, but as political appointees, their longevity and appointment were the reason they were there, to tilt the scale and help one side game the system. Those subject to those rules on paper see a self-serving interest in making th calls they know they can get away with by ignoring or intentionally violating the written laws. Laws are enforced when they serve a political boss and ignored when they benefit their opposition is not law and order. Recent sympathy showing a law enforcement officer killed by an undocumented immigrant while the same voices demanding the Jan.6 committers of violence resulting in the death of 6 law officers be released and are hostages is a cynical view of law and order. Both died in the line of duty and deserve sympathy. Neither is the rule of law upheld by those who misinterpret the laws because the judges, the referees, and the appeals court will have their backs if they subvert and twist laws' meanings.
