Messaging again: a new messenger who speaks to many in red states: James Talarico

There is a new messenger who speaks the language of many in red states...James Talarico, a state legislator in Texas. He is a devout Christian who actually reads the Bible and who puts his politics into how he sees it related to the religion that is the compass for his very fundamentalist belief. He sees as the most important message Jesus delivered: Love God with all your heart and treat your neighbor as you would like to be treated. That is not only a standard for his life as a preacher in training and the son of one, but he ties his beliefs to issues of the time.. He is a super articulate, young, and attractive spokesperson for his point of view.

Above all, Talarico is the polar opposite of the current leader of the GOP/MAGA movement, Donald Trump. Trump has no moral compass but is a self-serving, self-identified transactional person. That is his standard for life's decisions: to get the best deal to keep his power and wealth and gain more of both using his political office to do it. By inference, if people followed his unmoored, self-centered interest, they, too, will become richer and more powerful. Trump is a person who uses fear of his power to keep his followers and everyone he can in line, including cruelty and lack of empathy for how his policies harm "the least of these" and those trying to keep their daily lives above water.

MUFTIC FORUM BLOG: For those who want to put into perspective a profound amorality of the MAGA movement. Updated 5/8/2025

Trump's followers and some powerful cohorts think empathy is the sign of a failing society, but it is empathy that keeps community from lapsing into tribal chaos and dog-eat-dog conflict. It is the glue that keeps civilization from falling...the fate of nearly every civilization in history with a written record. Bravo, Talarico...you got my attention and admiration.
From my July 2 blog post:Was it moral and OK that Elon Musk cut US Aid in his chainsaw attack in search of ways to cut government funding so Trump could cut taxes to the ultra-rich?  Not only is USAID dead this month, which is now, but also millions who will die without that aid in the next few years.  No problem in Musk's value system, and he was famously quoted that 'The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.'"I believe in empathy, like I think you should care about other people," Musk said as part of the same discussion on Joe Rogan's podcast, "but you need to have empathy for, for civilization as a whole, and not commit to a civilizational suicide." ( fact checked on Snopes). So he must mean sharing our abundance as the richest country in the world with the poorest, and funding the methods of distribution is the US committing suicide?

Christianity should be outraged. In some twisted religious minds, it is not.. In Trump's world of Christianity, empathy and charity are now to be reviled by some preachers. Empathy  is now a dirty word, "walking in others' shoes", is a sign of feminizing churches because women are so vulnerable to appeals for charity,  so it is no longer a Christian value to some professed Christians,  per a report on NPR

The new GOP mantra: caring for those who cannot help themselves is waste and civilization weakness

The GOP mantra: caring for those who cannot help themselves is waste and abuse. The true believers in Trump have twisted themselves into pretzels to rationalize the immoral cuts to US food and vaccination programs in Africa that will lead to 14 million deaths in 5 years and yanking health care from over 12 million in the US and food assistance from the elderly, disabled, and too poor to pay their medical bills or afford nutritious food. It has been replaced by cheering for the cruelty of family separation and sending those whose only crime was no documentation to offshore torture prisons and alligator-infested onshore gulags, beating those they snatch from the streets without warrants in full view of public videos.  What the hell have they embraced?   Are empathy and sympathy for those who are suffering no longer American values? Sharing our surplus of food and our vaccines is a waste of resources and a form of fraud? Is cruelty now the standard for treating those who do not merit it or are deprived of the process to which they are due to protest their treatment as illegal or inhumane?

Was it moral and OK that Elon Musk cut US Aid in his chainsaw attack in search of ways to cut government funding so Trump could cut taxes to the ultra-rich?  Not only is USAID dead this month, which is now, but also millions who will die without that aid in the next few years.  No problem in Musk's value system, and he was famously quoted that 'The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.'"I believe in empathy, like I think you should care about other people," Musk said as part of the same discussion on Joe Rogan's podcast, "but you need to have empathy for, for civilization as a whole, and not commit to a civilizational suicide." Messaging again: Democrats need to have positive messages, too.

Trump has spent the first seven weeks promoting unpopular public policies. He is "underwater" in the polls on nearly all of his initiatives.  Democrats are still floundering, with many voices attacking with less than successful messaging, diffused and uncoordinated.  Voters know what Democrats are against but not what they are for.   Repeating the Biden administration's gains and losses is fair game but not central to a message. It may fuel buyers' remorse but humans do not like to admit they were wrong. Instead, look to the future and see what you will do better than what the GOP, Trump, and Musk are doing now.The Trump negatives need to be taken and reshaped into pushbacks that are positives with a focus on themes that affect both red and blue partisans, such as cost of living, corruption, and improving government services.  The public are consumers of government services; treat them like customers. Seeking efficiency is the goal. It is not the same as replacing government with deficiencies or no service at all. Trump is promoting corruption; we should restore independent watchdogs. Fear and favor have been replaced by adhering to the rule of law; we should abide by the rule of law; Trump promised to reduce your cost of living, and instead, he wants to increase your costs..Let's get rid of tariff wars.  Corrruption must not be tolerated and the rule of law is the most fair system for all. Restore watchdogs and respect the rule of law.  On Ukraine: Democrats support rule by the people  system we call Democracy, not rule over the people by a strong  man and tyrant, at home and abroad

Timing is everything: The time clock has not started running on the 2026 midterms, but Trump has given Democrats the gifts of economic downturns, billionaires running amock, and more. Guardrails against corruption have been removed. The power belongs to the ones with the money.  However, the messages I have been hearing are still speculative and not yet felt by the voters.  Trump's gift to Democrats should not be wasted when voters still do not feel the pain.  The sympathy should be shifted to the voters who lose services they need for their health and financial well-being, not just for the hardships facing those who lost their government jobs. Voters will need to feel the pain of chainsaw Musk before it is truly an effective approach. The sky will be falling sounds like so much political oratory and does not mean much until shards hit them in the head.  I told you so, we warned you, is not enough of a message.

Calling out the other side for gaslighting needs more than just calling something that is obfuscating.  Gaslighting...standard procedure for many in politics, is the overuse of "gas lighting", taken from a movie where the victim is confused into inaction due to slow realization as gaslights are dimmed.

What it means in political propaganda is that a defense against an attack, more polite than just calling out, is a lie, or twisted information, or diversions, or deflections, geared to confuse the public. It is a shorthand for describing in detail..However, it is used so much that it is irritating and does not really say specifically what is being done that is so bad. It needs a descriptor added to it.I prefer the words: X is trying to fool or confuse you(lie to you, twist into, divert to another topic) with a short sentence following.

Fleshing out some of this:

On the cost of living, the impact of tariffs has not yet been felt, but that may be the issue that determines the 2026 midterms.  The Trump administration has not set lowering the cost of groceries and living expenses as a priority or even is it a goal anymore. On the cost of living, the impact of tariffs has not yet been felt, but that may be the issue that determines the 2026 midterms. A pushback plank: Get rid of the trade wars and tariffs.

On corruption: restore independent watch dogs, I G's, ethics requirements and oppose conflict of interests. Restore the protection of whistle blowers. https://mufticforumblog.blogspot.com/2025/02/when-it-comes-to-corruption-trump-is.html         https://mufticforumblog.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-only-whistleblowers-left-is-free.html

Instead of ust criticizingTrump's obsession with kneecapping Zelensky and his bromance with Putin, Democrats could stand for a positive, such as a pledge to support Ukraine to remain independent of Russia, restore the mid-Atlantic alliances with our friends (we know the difference between friends and enemies)

On government efficiency: Deficiency is not efficiency, Musk. Making the government more deficient is not the same as making it deficient. The focus should be on providing improved customer service for programs that American taxpayers support and need: veterans services and making them more efficient in their delivery instead of eliminating or limiting their services, consumer and environmental protections, affordable access to health care including Medicare and Medicaid, and social security.  Merit should be rewarded and be the standard for hiring instead of loyalty to Trump and the size of political contributions.  3/13/25  Two federal judges ruled that probationary personnel fired by DOGE and OPM are to be rehired. Left are those who were fired who were not probationary. The impact on the ability of these agencies to function is yet to be determined.  Making government efficient is not the same as making government deficient.  The chainsaw massacre of government services continues.

On justice: the goal is fairness for all. It is not an instrument of disciplining those not loyal to Trump or his allies.  It is not an instrument to promote one race over any other or to carry out the agenda of any one religion or ideology, or to promote fear and favor.  Restore freedom of the press and speech, free of retribution and revenge from the all-powerful president.

On budget and deficit: The standard needs to include payfors for any new programs either to raise taxes or provide offsets elsewhere to expenditures. Oppose tax cuts for the very rich. They never have paid back what they cost the treasury in loss of income.

On mass firings of government employees, the Trump administration lost a big one and  got caught lying about the reason employees were fired: There is a process to firing workers and we should adhere to that process. Trump administration ordered to reinstate tens of thousands of fired probationary workers

Privatization of "entitlements" is not a good thing for ordinary citizens and so far no one has made much of an issue of that. The government is for the taxpayers who voted for the services and need them. Government services should not be for those who seek profit. Government services should not be private sector profit centers. Do not privatize; instead, improve their functions. Privatization just puts more money in billionaires' pockets who want to take a cut of investing your money as they invest it in the casino of Wall Street or in turning access provided by machines they supply instead of someone on the other end of the phone for those who are either too young or older computer illiterates. Those programs are for the public benefit, not for the benefit of profit-seeking businesses who only see you as a profit center. People sought these government programs because the private sector had failed them in the first place.

Asking the right questions is also an approach. The polls of public opinion and the courts are turning against the Trump initiatives in the first 7 weeks of the administration. 3/13/25 - Voters' Ratings On Economy And Trump Dip, Trade And Russia - Ukraine War Weigh On Trump's Numbers, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Majority Disapprove Of Trump's Handling Of Zelensky Meeting | Quinnipiac University Poll The response from Trump and his supporters is yes, it will be a little rocky for a while, but you will like what it will be when we are done. What is that? Who will benefit? Who is "you".How will we get there with the crises manufactured by Trump himself and Musk, who thinks making government services more deficient is the same as making them more efficient.

An answer: It will not be good for those who hoped grocery prices would be lowered and who benefit from continued affordable access to healthcare or who hope interest rates will fall enough they can buy a home. The only people who will like what is happening are the very rich and billionaires who want no constraints on their greed to become richer or to privatize every government service so they can get a cut of the taxpayer-funded administration. Those in need of such services as Medicare, Social Security, and Medicare to make ends meet should not be treated as a profit center for billionaires. They do not feel your pain or walk in your shoes (common definitions of empathy). In fact, some billionaires even view empathy as a weakness. For those who want to put into perspective a profound amorality of the MAGA movement. Updated 5/8/2025

For those who want to put into perspective the profound amorality of the MAGA movement, here is why democracy, as we have known it for 250 years, must be defended.  The MAGA movement leaves unchecked moral failures of humanity itself. This is deep in the political philosophy weeds for those who seek a perspective to understand why MAGA is such a danger to democracy.  It also may explain why Donald Trump's transactional approach to life without a moral compass, his use of lies, his libertine behavior, and his tolerance and even admiration of dictators full of power for themselves get excused by apologists. Humanity with its dark sides, lurks in all of us, either suppressed or unrecognized.  We see it in ourselves and either excuse it or ignore it or even embrace it. It is what it is.

Update: 5/8/2025 Trump's top advisors only want funds to go to educating kids who reflect his view of democracy. Stephen Miller claims that children are being taught to be 'communist' in schools. What's communist about it?|Spell it out. He did. Communism is woke culture. So that means diversity, equity, and inclusion are communist?. Dang...and I thought they were Christian concepts. Pope Leo XIV may have some ideas about this, too. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/our-new-woke-pope-newly-minted-pontiff-s-post-slamming-jd-vance-lights-up-social-media/ar-AA1Eq13a

How about teaching kids American history and why we have a separation of powers, the Bill of Rights to protect us from an overreaching and abusive federal government, and protect the civil rights of all of us, and how we fought fascist ideas and their methods in World War II

In a discussion with a person so disillusioned with the government that he has tuned out politics period, I countered with some political philosophy of my own. His point was that both Republicans and Democrats were equally corrupt and evil. What's the use in caring about or getting involved in politics?  My response: It's humanity that's the problem. The government can keep the worst of its nature in check.  It inspired me to give this more thought,  spell it out in this essay, and dig into the roots of what shaped my own political beliefs. It is those checks and balances that the supporters of Trump and Project 2025 want to tear down, whether they intend to or not. They are promoting politicians with passions of greed and lust to rule without limit.

This essay is not meant to be a sermon, or a holier-than-thou praise of myself and like-minded. This is an explanation and analysis of what is happening today as I see it, and it explains why I do what I do and why I write what I write. It is intensely personal, but writing may just cause us at this juncture in history to pause, reflect, and find value in what I am writing. The theology I am describing is not unique to Presbyterians.  I helped a daughter convert to Roman Catholicism by prepping her on the Catholic catechism. I found that my protestant beliefs about humanity were similar. It may even explain Justice Barrett's recent positions in the Supreme Court.   https://paw.princeton.edu/article/barrett-speaks-role-constitution    Amy Coney Barrett Joins Liberals to Defy Trump—Again

There are many on the political right who constantly contend that this is a Christian nation because our founders were Christian. However, the founders with the greatest influence melded the age of reason with Christianity in the Constitution. It was a very specific kind of Christianity that sounds even liberal today.

My answer to why our form of government benefits our country is that our founders, especially James Madison, believed that humanity was also morally evil, but reason could overcome that. If constructed properly, a government could help reason and beat down the passions plaguing humanity. The problem is humanity itself and the nature of humanity. The tragedy today is that there are forces who want those "passions" unchecked, using a wrecking ball to the constraints provided in the Constitution, removing and destroying checks and balances and individual rights, and more.

The political philosophy behind the Constitution recognized that man had passions that could be held in check by reason and moral conscience, and government could help that reason and morality keep these passions in bounds.  In simple terms, men have "passions" (basically evil and immoral) that reason can balance out and overcome.   A government can support that reason.  Here are the concepts that Madison's philosophy permeates the form of democracy we have enjoyed for 250 years and what the radical right wants to destroy, reflected in Project 2025.  They want to remove any checks and balances that keep "passions" in check. Princeton educated many of our country's founders and shaped their political beliefs. James Madison, in particular, took his lessons in philosophy at Princeton, and the Constitution reflects much of it.

The roots: The influence of the Scottish universities and their Scottish tutors on our founders cannot be underestimated. They influenced many, from Jefferson to Madison. Madison chose Princeton instead of William and Mary or Harvard because Princeton in New Jersey had become the hotbed of Scottish thought.  For a very readable accounting of the influence of Scottish thought of our founders, read  "First Principles" and especially the first five chapters...by Thomas E. Ricks, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize, published in 2020 by Harper..  The book is readily available in every format (of course, on Amazon)

As a practicing Presbyterian that I am, I have learned that  Princeton was its mothership,  the shaper of its religious preachers, and the views I have reflect the same Scottish philosophers taught by the Scottish professors to so many of our founders at Princeton that eventually shaped our country and the form of Madisonian democracy we have today. In my youth, my pastor was an immigrant Scotsman, and at that time, Presbyterian ministers had to have a Ph.D. from Princeton. Dr. Latham was 100% Scots, born and bred in Scotland, complete with the brogue. Fate somehow found his flock at the First Presbyterian Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma.  My parents were constantly reinforcing this to me that they attended that church because they did not view religion as an emotional experience but it was a rational one based on reason.  Ironically, Trump claims his religious affiliation is also Presbyterian, but none of this seemed to have rubbed off on him. Perhaps if he had Dr. Latham as his pastor and attended church like our family did, he may not have become the amoral transactional person he is today.

https://paw.princeton.edu/article/essay-witherspoon-madison-moral-philosophy-and-constitution#:~:text=President%20Eisgruber%20'83's%20focus%20on,and%20put%20it%20on%20display."So each entity – whether individual or government – has an interest in keeping passions within bounds set by reason and a moral conscience. This is likely the lesson Madison learned from Witherspoon’s lectures on moral philosophy. We see this lesson applied everywhere throughout the Constitution, e.g., checks and balances, separation of powers, Senate veto over the House, presidential veto over Congress, the implied power of judicial review over everyone, indirect election of senators by state legislatures (changed to direct election by the 17th amendment), and indirect election of the president by the Electoral College. We see it also in the Bill of Rights, which is to prevent the trial and conviction of another Socrates, a prophet, or even Jesus himself."

Empathy is the companion word to the Golden Rule, to treat others as you would like to be treated.  Musk believes it is a weakness. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/elon-musk-empathy-quote/

A FB friend was puzzled. Why is Musk being dumped on? He deserves our respect for his success with Space X and Tesla, and systems should also be applied to the government.. Those were successes in tech and the application in tech advancement. It does not translate to success in human services. He has shown ignorance of what services many government agencies provide to humans in need, or if he does, he does not care. His goal seems to treat humans like numbers in a computer printout and manipulate them like a computer chip or a piece of machinery. Walking in others' shoes is called empathy. He knows what it is and disses it. This is a soulless person who cares nothing for the human suffering his actions cause.. We all want our government to be more efficient, but Musk is attempting to make government deficient by eliminating the humans who make functions work or eliminating altogether the service Congress and the people they represent had agreed to and funded.

In medieval times in Europe, when most of the population was illiterate, the priests set standards for what they advocated as good behavior in terms of what was bad behavior in society.  They called them the Seven Deadly Sins. Copper doors to cathedrals and cartoonish examples of the sins were often themes of religious works of art. Few on this earth were or are free of sins, but some also violated nearly all.   https://www.britannica.com/topic/seven-deadly-sins    pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth.

I was asked if I could pray to both Allah and God at the same time.  Yes. They are the same:  I have many relatives who pray to Allah and many who pray in churches.I have been to weddings and funerals of both. I find little differences in what each believes is good and evil. I find believers can go off on tangents that are abusing the original intent of the founding documents, from the gospels to the Koran. I have copies of both in English in my library and am finding far more we have in common than we do not. I have had the pleasure of indulging in long theological discussions with Muslim scholars. We both trace our roots in belief in one God/Allah to the same: Abraham. Jesus was real; what he preached is what counts more than anything. You can accept what he preached even if you are not sure he was the son of God, or that after death he rose from the dead or that Muhammed ascended to heaven,, to get the word of Allah.. There are far more beliefs we have in common than differences, and all three set basic, similar standards for what is considered good behavior by humans..All three arose after the written word developed to record their words. Islam is 700 years younger than Christianity, but they both have roots in Abraham. That practitioners of the 3 religions have misused and abused their religion to justify the actions that we condemned as evil and used to amass their own power is not the fault of the religions' founders, but the fault of the nature of humanity that acts contrary to the original intent of their religions. All three were shaped by political events at the time of their founding. This is why I can condemn the Crusades, lynchings, and Nazis, 9-11 perps. Oct. 7, and their extreme cultist views of jihad as a violent one , and Israel's atrocities in Gaza at the same time.

Speaking to fear. Some are truly afraid, not from ignorance, but of societal changes, update June 29,2024

Speaking to the fearful is a messaging challenge. How do you even begin when fear is what Donald Trump is selling...fear of immigrants, fear of crime, fear of being left behind in the economy, fear of others not like themselves.  Lack of knowledge is part of it, but changes are going on now that are profound and often felt if not put into words.   Some are truly afraid, not because of ignorance but because of societal changes. These changes have been coming for a long time, and those who want to turn back the clock and those who embrace changes to modern society are still clashing.  Change comes easy for some, and for others, it scares them. Politicians usually respond by digging in or hurling insults at their opponents to support their immediate public policy issues on immigration, women's role and ability to control their lives, sexual orientation, and election "integrity" that affects minority access to the ballot.  Most do not see their fears in the context of history or as part of a larger movement. They just feel it in their bones. Others understand it and ride it to power, as Donald Trump is trying again and again to keep the fear, hate, and victimization exaggerated and heated as his case for election. Only he can fix it, he opines, so vote for him.

What has also become clear is that the fear of these societal changes affects many.  Democrats must find a way to recognize the fear, address it, acknowledge it, respect it, and not make it worse.  It does not mean agreeing to roll back the clock to 1938 or the 1950s, but perhaps a shift in attitude would help to be more empathetic with policies that respect the fears, acknowledge them,  and provide the facts and data that mitigate them. Some will listen. Not everyone has lost their ability to reason and think. In fact, the GOP is losing followers as the number of registered independents has soared, and Democrats have gained some. Voter registration is fluid in 2024 as citizens begin to tune into their choices. That is one part of the equation.

The next step is to go forward and present plans that at least smooth out the rough spots and make the case that even the fearful will be better off in time, more peaceful, and more prosperous. A fanatical minority attempting to seize power and suppress others guarantees chaos, or the less kind word, turmoil, and even violence: endorsing the violence of January 6, using terms like "bloodbath if I don't get elected", "things will be wild," calling the violent actors patriots, and executing generals who fail to obey him, including use of the active military to put down demonstrations by those who oppose him.  A platform of revenge, retribution, and favoring loyalty over ability is not how economic prosperity is nurtured.

The good news in political messaging is that optimism usually wins over a darker vision of change for the worse.  It is that track that Biden is following. However, it is not a strategy limited to presenting hope and plans for a better future.  Biden and his supporters need at every opportunity to point out the contrast with the jarring, violent, racist conflicts Trump is promising to use to promote himself to become a "strong man", dictator, or autocrat. That is not a fabrication of accusations when using Trump's own words and his past and current actions and attempts to verify that Trump is not just bloviating or Trump being Trump. He has already attempted to promote and use political violence in the past.  No need to exaggerate or lie.  His words are right in your face, and his history and actions speak louder than words.

Update: June 29, 2024;Religious affiliation is another large determinant influencing voters' decisions besides race that overwhelms political critical thinking.  Justice Alito's wife was caught raising the Christian Nationalist flag, a flag carried by the rioters on January 6. It did not used to be that way. I am a white Christian protestant who belongs to a mainstream traditional church, and sometimes I wonder where some of the theology these evangelical radical right-wingers espouse has nothing to do with the bible I read comes from.  I grew up in the "bible belt," Eastern Oklahoma, where the goal was to get more believers in faith preached in a particular denomination.. Now it has become, get more Trump supporters because he is the second coming. Christian Nationalism is the cause they are fighting.  Their goal is to turn our democracy into their theocracy. This came as no surprise to me when I read that Oklahoma just now ordered the Ten Commandments posted in school, and one-upped everyone else, requiring the Bible to be taught in school.  Christian Nationalists are jumping the gun: While the issue of posting the ten commandments in schools are being fought, Oklahoma has just one upped this: They order the Bible to be taught in classrooms.  https://www.reuters.com/world/us/oklahoma-orders-schools-teach-bible-every-classroom-2024-06-27/)

That is not a unanimous view, even among those protestants who identify themselves as evangelicals, and there is pushback, but the Christian nationalism this Flashpoint preacher promotes is very much part of the Trump political base.  It helps answer the question of where is this belief ideology coming from?

Some currents underlie the fears felt by many on the right. Society is indeed experiencing rapid change, and many fear it. The following is a personal account of how I came to understand what is happening.

In 1960, after a year abroad and face-to-face with communism and societal and religious cultures, including Islam, I returned to my senior year in college at Northwestern. I had the advantage of independent studies in my senior year, and my focus was on the cultural differences I had encountered, which had been so far removed from my bible belt upbringing in northeastern Oklahoma, or even in Evanston, Illinois, for that matter.  I needed to get a better understanding so I could digest what I had just experienced. It shaped my views for a lifetime, including what became issues 65 years later of cultural wars, racism, and civil and individual rights.

Among those classes and studies at Northwestern were standouts: The most impressionable one was examining the clash between traditional societies and religion, which I saw firsthand as my small independent studies group delved into Middle Eastern history and current events. We read the Koran, we read Zionist literature, and we read a book called "A Village in Anatolia," which gave an autobiographical account of a young man, a teacher, from and in a Turkish village with very insightful comments on the role of women and politics in a traditional Turkish society.  We concluded that Islam did not practice much "empathy," walking in other people's shoes.  Was that wrong? If not wrong, at least it was different.  Furthermore, where I grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma, neither did the bible belt Christians possess empathy or tolerance.(Oklahoma is one of the heartlands of the current Evangelical Christian movement). Oklahoma, in my youth, was the epitome of Jim Crow.  However, our 1960 seminar concluded that there would be a huge, even violent, reaction to modern society that accepted and supported these new attitudes of women's role, tolerance and acceptance of others' viewpoints, and energy production self-interests.  (Many in my group were from families engaged in energy development in the Middle East). I was there with a different motivation since I was about to begin life marrying someone from the multi-cultural, ever-clashing Balkans.  Mine was no abstract laboratory of thinkers; it was hands-on. Now what?

What I didn't see is that the clash of traditional roles and viewpoints was also affecting Christianity and Judaism, not just Islam. In her book, The Battle for God, Karen Armstrong, published in 2000, brought home the upheaval, the clash between the old and the modern,  that was showing itself in full bloom. All three religions had their roots in Abraham's story. What was a sin in all three were similar, and all believed in the same God, though they were called different words in different languages and theological references. However, all three were impacted by the clash of tradition vs modern society, and the reaction was already profound and palpable in politics, wars, revolts, and generational changes in values.

I plead guilty to a lack of empathy. I promise to try to be better at understanding, just as I was able to do in straddling the tolerance and attitudes of a multicultural and multigenerational family myself.  However, time marches on, and we have to deal with what is reality now in politics.  It does not mean we who embrace modernity have to give that up, but it does mean we have to change our approach and attitudes and show how public policies and political approaches give a chance for all to have their place.  The greatest difference between Democrats and the current GOP is that Democrats do not want the government to be the tool for forcing others to adopt cultural and religious practices and beliefs, and the other party wants the opposite.

Here is where I would start. I think the traditionalists go wrong because they want to protect their viewpoints and force others to obey them through government edicts and laws imposed on those who find such viewpoints abhorrent or a painful health or economic burden.  What the Democrats must do is point out individuals are not being asked to have abortions or not use contraceptives or IVF, but to let individuals make that choice, respect it, but not force others to bow down and obey their religious-based beliefs and interpretations of scriptures with which they disagree. That has always been the Democrats' stated view, but not the emphasis that what choice means is really a choice, not an edict resulting in a government prosecuting someone. The advantage of Roe v Wade is that it was held up as what the majority of society approved, life begins viability, and it is still the standard with which the overwhelming majority agrees per the polls.  It is up to the clergy to make their case that abortion is murder,  that life begins at inception, and that the pill is murder, too. Still, it should not be the government's job to be the enforcer in the kind of democracy we have,  a multicultural, multi-religious, and diverse population.

Regarding women's role in modern society, those embracing modernism also recognize the economic necessity that requires women to work and have a political voice in shaping their lives so that they are treated fairly and equitably.  However, women who choose to stay at home, home-school their kids, or must do that because of either religious beliefs or financial ones deserve respect, too. I have both modernists and dedicated conservative Christians in my family.

The question of sexual identification is another area of enormous cultural conflict.  If anything, permitting people to come out of the closet and be open about their choices in life or to be just themselves has been a jolt and no doubt a jarring experience for traditionalists. However, the joy and peace of mind it brings to those now liberated to be free and open about it is to be respected and appreciated, not condemned and criminalized.  As with matters of choice and women's roles, no one is forcing or should force anyone to become what they feel they are not.  Have a heart, holier than thou people.

Biden was correct when it comes to the fear of immigrants and others. He recognizes an administrative failure to fund and implement existing laws that do provide respect and the goal of the US being a refuge to those who are being prosecuted or are victims of rampant crime in their native lands.  Just enforce the existing laws and give the wherewithal to do it. Economic refugees have their place in contributing to the US economy as well, even if access is uncontrolled with open borders.  What this approach does is respect a sane approach but eliminates the motivation of hate and fear that permeates the inhumane approach that Trump is exploiting for his political advantage with such racists comments as "adulterating our blood," "murders and rapists," phrases that are not born out by any data or statistics, but are just blanket fear-mongering to make followers think he is the only one who can fix what he promotes as the problem.  He is not as the bi-partisan bill passed by the Senate demonstrates.  Now, he wants the "crisis" that is not so much of a crisis after all. wait until he controls Congress, both Houses, and the Oval Office, so he can do it his way.   Those "blood adulterers, rapists and murderers, human traffickers. and brown people", all of those he tells you to fear and you now believe him, will have another year to flood the borders.  The reason is fear is his platform, his ticket to victory, and solving the problem now would take that plank away.   Is it possible, fearful of immigrant folks, that you are being played?

Another element in fear-mongering by MAGA is that voter fraud is widespread, so votes do not count, and elections deserve to be overturned. The racist motivation is not disguised since most attempts to suppress the votes are aimed at areas with heavy Black populations. It is no coincidence. " Suppression efforts range from the seemingly unobstructed, like strict voter ID laws and cuts to early voting, to mass purges of voter rolls and systemic disenfranchisement. These measures disproportionately impact people of color, students, the elderly, and people with disabilities. And long before election cycles even begin, legislators redraw district lines that determine the weight of your vote." https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/block-the-vote-voter-suppression-in-2020
