Consumer price increases are coming down. Why don't consumers see it? Now what?

The macroeconomist view is that the red line shows price increases, month-to-month, are returning to pre-COVID levels. However, what Trump is selling to consumers dismisses that information because he notes the prices are higher than in his glory days before COVID. Instead, we have a booming economy, and consumers binge buy as they make up for pent-up demand after the near COVID-19 depression.

Consumers feel and see for themselves; telling them the data says they are blind is a political loser. Continuing with that same message, Biden is also losing the message war.  One very red flag that Biden is losing the propaganda war is that over 63% of voters think their own personal finances are good and more think excelle,t  However, everyone else is suffering from a "bad" economy.   What Biden needs to do is put whatever in terms to make people aware of this and ask the question and answer why and  what he did to make you, an individual, feel better.  https://www.axios.com/2024/01/17/americans-are-actually-pretty-happy-with-their-finances

   https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/04/13/voter-perceptions-economy/

Here are some possible political winners. They include reporting the good news about actually what is happening to customers buying retail instead of just handwringing,  hitting Trump for policies that would raise consumer prices, and lying about his power to lower prices. There are also ways for consumers to fight greedflation by themselves.

 1) Biden's message must match what consumers feel and see, and he can. He must change the narrative from empathy hang-wringing to the message that actual price inflation is nearly back to what rates were in 2018.. The data reflects that greedflation is abating. All consumers hear is how high prices have been since their glory days before COVID-19 but inflation was already taking place at the beginning of 2018. Then inflation went sky-high right after COVID. It is back to inflation rates pre-COVID times. We would have to be in a deep recession if prices were to crash back to pre-COVID that much today.

Biden's social media gurus need to start noticing price decreases from post-COVID high. and publicize the good news.   What needs to be done is to find examples of how prices have decreased since COVID. particularly for the urban wage owners.   Point out that more items have price reduction stickers than ever before.. That is what consumers see." My, look at the sales shelf stickers"   Wow, last week's eggs were x, but I got some on sale or lower than last week's " "I saw reduced prices stickers all over the shelves. "  That is the best indication that greedflation is abating. Products have been overpriced, and now competitors are forcing prices down. Another good sign is that the free market system is still alive as retailers realize there is a business opportunity to compete with lower prices. Update: 5/20'24  https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/target-reduces-prices-5000-products-high-inflation-persists    Many of the items are in the grocery department. Look for the yellow tags. That is the free market system at work. It is a slow process and it is still a work in progress.

2) Trump is conning you to think he can reduce prices to pre-COVID days. He is pulling consumers' legs, and many are falling for it. Is he telling you he can set prices? Of course, he can't.. So how can he deliver on that promise, prices as they were before COVID? He can't, and neither can Biden. A government setting prices only happens in a communist country with central planning. We live in a free market.  The silver lining with even better employment records in our recent history and before COVID, too: At least, too, many more Americans have a job, better than at any time in our history and even before COVID. Those jobs now pay more per hour, " so we can still pay for what we need and feel secure about jobs out there if what I am doing goes south."

 3) Trump himself would be an inflation causation. Here is how Trump would make prices go up with his plans. He surely caters to oil oligarchs to get campaign donations who love to see that price per barrel soar, and he threatens to raise tariff prices on all imports. He proposes to take away the only power to control inflation, our central bank, the Federal Reserve.   As president, he has no power to curb inflation. also, does he want to destroy the only tool out there? Sure high interest rates contribute to increased prices, but without the Fed to put the break on inflation to slow down consumer demands, it would be worse. In fact, inflation would be Katy bar the door out of control.  So far, our interest rates and inflation are among the lowest in the industrialized world.  https://www.statista.com/statistics/1317878/inflation-rate-interest-rate-by-country/  If it ain't very broke, don't very well break it. Trump's promises would do just that. Increase inflation.

I have noticed that the price of clothing is not much higher than before COVID.  I also see that fresh produce in the winter is still affordable.  Now imagine all the produce you buy that comes in from Mexico and South America in the winter you buy and then imagine what Trump would do by adding a 10% duty on that as he proposes.   I look at my labels on clothing for country of origin, and, wow, it is mostly made in China, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. Much furniture is also imported. So now Trump wants to add 10% to every import, which will simply be passed on to me for the importer to raise their prices to keep up their profit margins?  Consumers can just cough that up because no matter how much imports cost it still would be cheaper than such labor-intensive manufactured products made in the USA.  Trump's immigration platform is to send millions of migrants to camps and then expel them from the US.  If you think the cost of domestic produce and prep of processed foods sold at the grocery store and eating at your favorite restaurant will be cheaper with Trump's immigration plans,  you need a grip on reality. Migrants are a big part of the labor force in these sectors.

4) Here is how consumers themselves can revolt against greedflation. Buy cheaper. Help those greedy ones lose sales and look for cheaper generic and store brands.  The family for which I shop is three adults. My monthly grocery budget has not changed since it was before COVID because I have shifted to cheaper meat cuts, more pork, more chicken...and I buy store brands instead of advertised brands. I maintain my store affinity member number to take advantage of sale prices. Nationally advertised brands have high advertising overhead, and you pay for it. Duh.  The quality of these grocery store brands is just as good or better than the nationally advertised ones. I buy products where shelf price stickers point to sales and price reductions, and there are many more of them than I have ever seen. That is a visual video that says something, reporters. The free market is working; competition is why there are so many price reductions on the shelf stickers/tags. So stop buying the more expensive can of the same kind of product and punish the greedy.  Be wise to the greedy tricks of less product in new or smaller boxes or the same old price you remember and just say no. Find another brand at a lower cost per ounce or pound instead.

Felicia Muftic's resume points to a career of advocacy for consumers.  Her first consumer project was to prove Denver's poorer consumers paid more at grocery stores by launching volunteers to survey and collect the data, and then she published it.  She is the author of the Colorado Consumer Handbook and has served as a consumer representative on many boards and commissions. She is a former white-collar crime and consumer protection unit director in Denver's district attorney's office. She has served as a president of the board and government relations staff of the local consumer credit counseling nonprofit agency.

Data:

Monthly increases of prices for urban workers: it was on the increase in 2018, 3.2 % rate, and back down to lower rates of increase is back to more similar rates of increase, though up a bit from 2.9 to.3.5 in 2024 first quarter.  The huge spike was in the post-COVID era. https://www.bls.gov/regions/mid-atlantic/data/consumerpriceindexhistorical_us_table.htm

Victims of a Trump v 2 would be us, consumers, and the environment: The winners, the powerful bootlickers.

From a Facebook posting 1/22/2024

I just heard CNBC Squawk Box's Andrew Ross Sorkin on Morning Joe this AM opining on the recent CEO of Wells Fargo and attendees at Davos representing world CEOs opine that Trump would win in November, so in public, they said that was the good and bad news or something wishy-washy like that. Behind the Davos scenes, Sorkin e heard some of these CEOs say off-stage that they were afraid of Trump's retribution if they supported Biden. I see that as instructive to the rest of us that if Trump got elected, we could expect the most corrupt anti-consumer and anti-environment administration in the history of the US.

It is not only fear of retribution that drives the DAVOS CEO.. Trump's promise to make all appointees to regulatory agencies loyal to him instead of the laws they are charged to enforce, and if the business needed a favor, they had better start licking his boots now or just shut up.
How could that impact us, the non-CEOs of the world? We consumers will be the victims and so will the environment. I see regulatory decisions to favor the interests of banking, the environment, and consumer protections to favor the political bootlickers with the money and the power. It certainly is not the rest of us.
Including those issues in the public interest that would be at risk in a Trump presidency but fulfilling the corporate dreams would be ignoring environmental objections to pipelines and drilling of fossil fuels, of removing safety requirements on vehicles we drive, and removing the Biden administration initiative to remove junk fees on our overdrafts, to be specific.
More forgiveness of student loans? Forget it. Instead of stopping mergers of airlines and supermarkets whose antitrust action's purpose would be to eliminate competition so they can raise prices on consumers without impunity? Forget that.
That greedflation is not subject to excess profit taxes, as Biden proposes? Forget that, too.
The media that reports the bad news and the good news, would have licensing problems for reporting any bad news coming out of the White House if Trump disapproves of them. He has already threatened that. Most disturbing Trump'plan is the replacement with MAGA appointments to the Federal Reserve instead of those who govern interest charges with skill. He would force them to lower interest rates because it is good politics. So what if it eventually wrecks the economy. So, those whose eyes gloss over when it comes to economics, with a Trump administration both consumers and their pocketbooks, health, and safety are casualties as the favors go to the powerful bootlickers. It is exactly how Viktor Orban became dictator of Hungary, pursuing policies that favored big business donors as democracy died in that country.

Additional note: already at risk of destroying the power of regulatory agencies, and leaving the details to non qualified experts, courts and lawmakers, is a case now before the Supreme Court; regarding the long standing Chevron Dictrine. Time for Biden to go on the attack against Trump on democracy v dictatorship update Jan.6, 2024

Update: January 6, 2024.  Biden kicked off his campaign for re-eleciton and went on attack accusing Trump as being a danger for democracy. Biden delivers speech on his 2024 reelection bid (youtube.com)

It is time for all good "normal people" to support the calls for Biden to stop talking about the economy and instead attack Trump about democracy v dictatorship..Trump just raised public interest on the issue himself with his being a dictator for a day on two issues. The problem is Trump has promoted many other dictatorlike policies on record before this and day one will be more crowded than these two regarding gas prices and closing the border.  Trump is the obvious GOP nominee, and the trials will do little to change polls unless there is a  jury trial of his peers before November 2024 that would dramatize Trump's coup, the history of his attack on democracy...  For that reason Jack Smith has shortcutted lower court delays by asking the Supreme Court on 12/11 to rule on the question of whether Trump is above the law or is covered by some immunity law or the Constitution. 12/13/23, the DC Court of Appeals also agreed to expedite the resolution of the question if a president is immune from criminal prosecution. The trial date was put on hold pending all of this, but given the quick work of both SCOTUS and the DC appeal court may keep the trial schedule closer to the original dates. .

Update 12/14/23  The GOP has been gambling that voters are still sour on the economy a year from now, so sour, they will vote for TrumpMAGA. The Federal Reserve 12/13  noted that inflation was below 3%, on its way down to the goal of 2%. The predicted recession never happened, as we are still at full employment, with wages rising faster than inflation.  That is all good news, but consumers are not feeling it. One reason is that business profits have soared, meaning there has been some price gouging and greedflation in both the food and fuel areas, per some observers.  I paid under $3 a gallon for gas yesterday, a welcome lower price, and competition in consumer sectors may also force lower prices.  The chances that the economy will be even in better shape in a year, consumers will feel the ower prices and interest rates, and the GOP eggs in their basket in 2023, the economy, will be rotten in 2024.  It is too early for Biden to crow now, but in the meantime he can still lay the groundwork for his support of continuing Democracy as we have known it v Trump planning to act like a dictator if he wins.  Greedflation: corporate profiteering ‘significantly’ boosted global prices, study shows | Inflation | The Guardian    Fed interest rate decision December 2023: Fed holds rates steady, indicates 3 cuts coming in 2024 (cnbc.com   ‘Greedflation’ study finds many companies were lying to you about inflation | Fortune Europe

Continuing with the original post:The public is not going to take Trump and MAGA seriously about his advocacy of what looks and smells like a dictatorship unless the issue gets attention in prime time. Biden can do that best. Timing is always an issue, but inflation is almost under control. with belief the Fed will lower interest rates in 2024, and gas prices are down, so when consumers are feeling the improvements is the time for Biden to take a credible victory lap, but not yet.  Abortion will still be a significant voter-driver turnout issue from now to November 2024, but opposition to federal bans is well-organized, sustained, and vocal.  All of these issues will come to a head in time for the presidential elections and can all be revisited when the public is more focused than it is now.  In the meantime, Biden can use this time to get his ducks in a row regarding democracy v dictatorship and build up that campaign platform plank as he and his party would preserve idemocracy and Trump would destroy it...

The test of whether Trump is just joshing or not is that his public plans call for replacing civil service and cabinet and their top brass with only loyalists. There is no political party to tell him "no", a GOP that has been totally taken over by Trump loyalists, with 48 percent of Republicans  OK for an authoritarian president and 80%  still believe the 2020 election was stolen. This attitude will be reflected in the House of Representatives. There will be no DOJ telling him he cannot do what he has promised publicly he will do,  no political party bucking him at the primary level, no generals disagreeing with his orders that they should send in active military and tanks to put down opposition demonstrations, and any wannabe opposing party officials, D or R, or journalists having to choke down fear of the  FBI knocking in their doors at night as Trump seeks revenge and defacto control of the press and directs the FBI to find evidence to indict his political enemies.  If the judiciary tries to stop him, Trump has already demonstrated he can delay, delay, delay, tie the process in knots, intimidate, primary, and appoint loyalists. Even if rulings are adverse to him, those instructed to enforce rulings will already have been replaced with his loyalists, per Plan 2025.  That is all "day one," or within 2025.. " Day two" is to rewrite the Constitution to benefit his staying in power and eliminate and or limit checks and balances, and civil rights. Day three and four? Democracy is toast.

Repeat of an earlier post follows with source citations and what a second term Trump means for certain public policy issues.

It is also true about democracy v autocracy. About 18%  of Americans want an autocracy; another 22% lean that way or are tolerant.  That 40% either favor or don't care whether we have a democracy or actually support a dictatorship like Trump is promising is frightening, but not a majority either. However, 48% of Republicans favor authoritarianism.  The good news is that there is a 20% tilt for continuing democracy as we know it, and there are some of the 20% of fellow travelers favoring autocracy are not that solid. https://www.prri.org/research/threats-to-american-democracy-ahead-of-an-unprecedented-presidential-election/.

From the Washington Post article, here's why the legal issue facing Trump has little or no resonance with Republicans. 4 out 5 think it is political persecution: "Despite the obvious evidence for Trump’s wrongdoing — the Capitol riot, the documents found at Mar-a-Lago, the attempts to overturn the election results in Georgia — most Americans told YouGov pollsters in August that they viewed the charges as intended to block Trump politically. About 4 in 5 Republicans held that view." The significance of these trials is that they fortify fear of a second-term Trump. Still, the worst-case scenario is that they will not be resolved and will be slow walked to after November 2024 and fence-sitting voters will be left in ignorance about whether the Big Lie was truth or fantasy.  It is central to the democracy v dictatorship issue but not fatal because Trump's recent words about his future plans are plenty to make the case:  he is a wannabe dictator.

"Six in 10 voters cited protecting democracy as an extremely important reason that they decided to vote in November. This put the issue ahead of inflation (53%), abortion (47%) and crime (45%). When asked to choose the top two issues that motivated them to vote, 50% chose protecting democracy, second only to inflation at 55%.
