How do you explain the gaining steam of Bernie Sanders and AOC's anti-oligarch tour?

I am watching the national media trying to explain why Bernie Sanders and AOC are getting traction. Why did this not happen in 2024? Something happened between then and now. Here is my observation:

1) The rise of the billionaires Trump has empowered them to act on his behalf, fitting them into a new classification term for the US, "oligarchs". Their ignorance and understanding of what services the government provided to the non-rich has been jaw-droppingly insensitive, out of touch with how others live, and angering. This will become even more controversial in any upcoming debate over tax cuts to the rich while cutting services and benefits to the lower and middle classes. https://www.forbes.com/sites/chasewithorn/2025/04/01/forbes-39th-annual-worlds-billionaires-list-more-than-3000-worth-16-trillion/

2) An administration that many voted for because Trump promised to make life cheaper for those struggling to cope with daily life they cannot afford. Some Trump voters had hoped for Trump, who claimed to represent them in 2024, but now ignores their priorities as he pursues his other own obsessions. This will become an even hotter issue since voters have not yet felt the full force of economic pain caused by the tariff wars and reduced access to veterans benefits, social security, Medicaid, medicare, school lunches, and consumer protections.

3) Public policies are implemented that most blue or red had not voted for...sabotaging social security, firing veterans and hurting their benefits, and removing help for students with disabilities, increasing costs of living instead of lowering them through nutty tariff wars.

4) Trump embracing a dictator like Putin as he ticks off our best foreign friends and makes us a pariah nation to the rest of the free world we used to lead by example and policies.

5) The upshot of 1-4 is happening in March 2025 . It is economic populism at the core, unlike the 2024 elections, which were dominated by cultural populism on issues of racism. It is also related to immigration, too much/ too little diversity, sexism, abortion, gender and LGBTQ issues, and book banning or not. The villains to blame now are the oligarchs who Trump empowered as personified by chainsaw-wielding Elon Musk instead of the libs or fascists.

Note: These are non-partisan issues but appeal to elements in both political parties to which AOC and Sanders appeal.

Note: none of this post is put in terms of ideology or political science concepts like democracy vs.autocracy/fascism, rule of law, constitutional crisis, populism, cultism, or Marxism, which the well-educated grasp. However, everyone else asks, what does this do for me, my family, and my daily life? If Democrats hope to reach more of those without a college education, they must re-orient their messaging terminology.

The anti-oligarch tour's success should not be a surprise: Tracking its rise

 https://mufticforumblog.blogspot.com/2024/12/new-resistance-opportunity-arises.html updated 3/23/2025

New resistance opportunity arises: Rule by oligarchs and class warfare updated through 3/23/ 2025 from its beginning in December, 2024

Update: 3/23/2025
Disturbed because of the growing crowds supporting the Bernie Sanders/AOC anti-oligarch tour? The rowdy, disruptive attendees at the GOP town halls? When MAGA controls the White House and the majority of Congress and proposes to end democracy as we know it, and Musk is empowered to take a chainsaw to government regardless of human casualties, that is darn radical from the extreme right, so do not be surprised as the left responses in radical terms, too. Extremism begets extremist responses. You should not have been surprised. Biden, by the way, hardly a radical, saw it coming, and kicked it off.

Update 3/31/2025: The accusation from the right wing is that those attending GOP townhalls are dominated by rowdy anti-trump crowds, are organized by left-leaning political organizers and are paid to attend, so it does not represent the voters is more than just being dismissive or smearing the attendees to explain why this is happening to their MAGA wing. Don't be fooled, exhorts Trump. First: prove the accusation that those attendees are paid. (Evidence is missing, so prove it.) Second: where are the MAGA counter crowds at the same events? (Not those that only allow screened MAGA attendees to the GOP townhalls). Those town halls are also open events, but MAGA could attend and push back. They do not. Why? Is it a lack of organization on MAGA's part, or a lack of enough enthusiasm for what Trump is doing? Or is it that anger is a greater motivator
for political action? If it is the latter, that should be a warning sign for the GOP in the midterms and they are fooling themselves.

One issue that has not gotten as much attention as it should is how corrupt the Trump regime is and the open corruption that oligarchs like Musk represents and fosters. Update: 4/1/2025 The  Trump administration is clearing the way for corruption. Corruption is being legitimized in various ways. Bribery and influence peddling are disguised as campaign contributions or buying Trump's enterprise offerings. Trump Store launched 168 products to profit off presidential transition period - CREW | Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington   In addition,, the Trump  family is heavily involved in their own crypto business. Trump Family Venture Plunges Deeper Into Crypto With New ‘Stablecoin’ - WSJ. Update: 1 16 2025:  Biden's farewell address: his warning about oligarchs' rule destroying democracy: Biden delivers farewell address, warns of 'oligarchy' taking shape in America | AP News

Update: 1 27 2025.  The left thinks Biden should be indicted for letting the billionaires get rich during his term, so he calls them oligarchs. Here is where this "indictment" went off the rails. Yes, the ultra-rich billionaires rose, but it took more than 4 years. That is not the issue: the issue is what the billionaires are doing, which is to take over the political power of the nation, having already conquered the economic power. When they merit an office in the West Wing and whisper daily into Trump's ear, that is when they leap from just a billionaire to oligarchdom. In fact, they are even more powerful than the oligarchs supporting Putin, who simply kills them off if they misbehave. The oligarchs put Putin in power, and once there, Putin kicked them out of his government. That may be the fate of the oligopoly under Trump, too. However, Trump is still consolidating his power and needs their help. Our version deserves the title of oligarch because of their political roles, which lifts them above the other extremely rich. They are robber barons, ok. Not just deserving that indictment as monopolists and vulture capitalists, they have branched out by trying to get more tax relief and do away with environmental and consumer protections and social programs to balance off their assault on the treasury. They stand ready and willing to buy any politician who stands in their way. The political power they now have is what needs to be indicted, along with Trump giving them the seat of honor at his table.

Update: 1 /14/2025
I picked up a disturbing line in last Monday's Rachel Maddow show: " We have already lost our democracy. " . My follow-up question is: Can we get it back, and how can we? Ideas, comments? My own thoughts are that on November 5, 2024, 49.9 of voters handed over governance to this country to an autocracy, fed and influenced by oligarchs, and enabled by his Supreme Court to give him immunity from prosecution for criminal acts while performing his official duties. On January 21, 2025, Trump will finalize the takeover by signing 100 executive orders, mostly concerning the implementation of Project 2025, an attempt to place all power in the hands of the executive branch, and reduce the influence of the two other branches by appointees and threats, including violence. The business community is already falling all over themselves bending their knees, ending DEI, and ending fact-checking, mostly out of fear of the abuse of power, from the DOJ and regulatory agencies.

Continuing the original 12/17/2024  post:Trump's reliance on oligarch contributions to his campaign and his fawning, and surrounding himself, his cabinet, and his advisers with the current crop of the ultra-rich is ripe for a resistance campaign issue for the midterms. Trump's rule by an administration filled with billionaires that he is planning for his next act is a gift to Democrats as they plot strategy for the midterms in 2026 to get back those working-class voters they lost in 2024. Democrats can and should make a bigger deal of class warfare. It is low-hanging fruit, obvious and visible, and Democrats have a tradition and a credible track record of supporting the middle class ' pocketbook interests.

From my blog posting 1/13/2025 :If we have lost our democracy,  can we get it back? Preserving and restoration of democracy is not an effective pitch to motivate voters. We just got a lesson in that. In fact, at the risk of stating the obvious, what works is understanding and illustrating what voters feel in their lives and directing messaging to their real-life concerns. If democracy is mentioned, it should be that democracy will and can be the best vehicle to reflect and fix the problems important to "ordinary people" rather than an out-of-control kleptocracy and corruption of a Trump autocracy.

The problem is that in 2024, the fear of the loss of democracy was not taken seriously, not understood, nor urgent, and not relevant to everyday life, in spite of the Democrats making Trump's threat to democracy a major campaign issue. Experience is the best teacher if the connection between who and what is at fault can be made and voters are made aware of how they have been hurt. If and when Trump fails to deliver on such promises as rolling back grocery prices, keeping gas at the pump affordable, stopping inflation, and making health care and general living more affordable, will those swing voters, the non-racist motivated ones, be receptive to the message and will the pendulum swing the other way. The trust in Trump, that whatever he does that is good for him is good for you and me too, is a bond that needs to be broken. Trump will continue to win the race-sensitive part of the MAGA block with his anti-DEI, Project 2025 White nationalist agenda, and cruel immigration policies.

GOP priorities regarding tax policy are designed to make the rich richer by extending the tax cuts the rich love. Either they blow the hole bigger than now in the deficit or cut social programs that benefit the middle class and the working poor. Health care, social security and Medicare are targets, among others. This one issue alone is ripe for class warfare. The burning question Democrats need to ask at every opportunity is "How does that benefit whom" and they need to then be ready to point out their alternatives. The GOP has been handed a gift: recovery from COVID-19, putting the breaks on inflation, and jobs for everyone who more or less paid enough to keep up with inflation. Now, let us see what they do with that.

This is a good summary of the GOP's legislative agenda:  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/119th-new-congress-to-do-list-priorities   If this is it, I see nothing in it that will improve the lives of "ordinary Americans". In the meantime, both the executive branch and Congress run by the GOP support and promise policies, including tariffs and immigration, guaranteed to stoke the flames of inflation again. The GOP has to get it right before the midterms for those who say they voted for Trump because of the economy. How the GOP will offset negative fallout will be carrying out their white Christian agenda as planned in Project 2025, which has little to do with Congressional action but relies on executive orders.   Expect every possible failure by the Trump administration on economic policies to blame immigrants who are black and brown or foreign.  So far, this racist, hate approach, fear, and blame the "others" has been a winning strategy for every wannabe and current strongman dictator from Putin to Orban to Erdogan to Trump.

The most damaging blow to democracy was Citizens United where contributions could be hidden by corporations in lobby and interest groups and political committees. We used to be able to see who contributed. Now they are hidden thanks to the absurd Scotus opinion corporations are people and have rights Musk was brazen. Nothing hidden there:$ 277 million. https://www.msn.com/.../elon-musk-put-277-million-into...       If there is one change that would help democracy survive as it was meant to be, it would be to undo the Citizens United opinion.  The other would be to undo political gerrymandering, another bad Scotus opinion. This permits those with money to determine the outcome of representative bodies by threatening to provide enough money to "primary" someone who steps out of line. Musk just did it. Republicans dismiss Elon Musk's threats after bill rejection

How Hungary's Orbán uses control of the media to escape scrutiny and keep the public in the dark | The Associated Press

Elon Musk, a person who could fit the definition of an oligarch, has recently become Trump's alter ego. Now that Elon Musk seems to be running the transition and Trump sits in Mar A Lago nodding his head, Musk deserves real scrutiny. Do we really want that powerful influence over Trump by Musk, who is revealing himself as a neo-Nazi sympathizer? He just congratulated the AFD party in Germany for its recent showing and called it the savior of Germany, a party widely recognized by many as a neo-nazi party. It should not come as a surprise.  Trump has given American neo-Nazis a public platform since taking over Twitter (now X).
He is under scrutiny by the Securities and Exchange Commission for failing to comply with the SEC rules in his purchase of X. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/14/sec-sues-musk-alleges-failure-to-properly-disclose-twitter-ownership.html  In the newTrump regime, we should be watching what happens with this suit and whether it is dropped.

Some (writing opinions) even think Musk wants to rule the world. This would explain his meddling in other countries' affairs.  We used to dismiss a person  who pulls the world's strings as nothing but a paranoid delusion. That thought the Musk would attempt to be such a force is frightening. Elon Musk seeks to install himself as global dictator – and 'so far it's working': expert

Update: 1 14 2025 In reaction to rumors that Musk is considering buying TikTok and Zuckerberg caved into Trump and stopped fact-checking on Facebook, this is very important; non-profit media is launching an effort to keep social media out of the hands of billionaires. In the meantime, like never before, social media should be treated as people's opinions but not as a source of credible facts and data. My policy is to list the sources of my facts and data cite and what is influencing my opinions on my blog or on social media postings. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/a-30-million-campaign-to-free-social-media-from-billionaire-control-is-now-underway/

In 2024,  Democrats raised the fear that oligarchs would damage democracy (https://mufticforumblog.blogspot.com/2024/10/democracy-has-oligarch-problem.html) and instead made combatting MAGA's extreme positions on choice and minority rights and other cultural issues their prime issues.Harris did her best to talk about grocery and gas prices and the high cost of housing and presented some constructive ideas to deal with it, but Trump, the ever real estate promoter and con man, sounded more credible, pointed to low prices pre COVID to make America great again  though he had no plans.  We know how that turned out. We also know he can't deliver, already saying" it is too hard to do it." Now, in Trump.2  it appears that the middle class and working families will also be the victims of the oligarch influence over Trump.

The rule of billionaires in this second Trump administration is likely to be Trump's Achilles heel. Dems can take aim at those super-rich to the extent that billionaires 1) do not know what wage earners have to do to make ends meet and 2) don't care because they only see public policy good that increases their wealth in tax policy and deregulation. 3) Billionaires often see offsetting the cost of their tax cuts and the damage of doing that by cutting social security health care, feeding the poor, etc, that make the middle-class and working poor's lives easier. Therein lies the reasons Dems can and should engage in class warfare as a contrast to their policies that help wage earners and, the middle class and the needy. They have a track record of advocating, supporting, and protecting the middle class that the GOP does not have. Trump's billionaire appointees plan is a new opportunity ripe for attack not available to Democrats in 2024.

https://mufticforumblog.blogspot.com/2024/11/resistance-is-not-enough-democrats-have.html

Post 2024 election, the billionaire contributions to Trump continued per this meme, data unverified but worthy of attention: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18SyzrraVK/

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BILLIONAIRES AND OLIGARCHS  Are all billionaires oligarchs? I have my own take on that. Oligarchs are those who participate in an oligarchy. is an interesting evolution of the usage of the word oligarchs that has roots in economic terms, in how many limited numbers of companies control a "market', or specific sectors of the economy.

Oligarchs also wield more power than just in business. They are politically involved and control more than one power center, such as the media and political positions, informal or formal.  An oligarch is now most frequently associated with political power.  Not all billionaires are oligarchs, but an oligarch is usually a billionaire or at least a multi-millionaire.
However, Putin's regime is supported by what Russians call oligarchs...very rich Russians who act on Putin's behalf (or meet unfortunate deaths if they do not). It has become more of a political term than a business/market term.   The term oligarch resembles the US. It has become a political description of a billionaire tied up in political power that resembles the Russian counterparts. I see it in that context.
.

Is Trump an oligarch? If not, he is at least an aspiring one. He acts like one and surrounds himself with bonafide ones to such an extent that at least he appears to treat them as his peer group. Recently, in the passage of the continuing resolution for keeping the government open and his failure to get what he wanted (ending the debt ceiling), he looked like he bowed to his peer, Elon Musk, and Musk's attempt to blow up the bi-partisan deal reached earlier.

This is a potential issue, and to the extent those like Elon Musk and others hurt ordinary Americans, it needs to be followed closely. It also depends upon the messaging skills of Democrats to make the connection, to date, at best, poor.  The opportunity is there. Not only is it a class clash, but it also has practical consequences that will hurt Americans in their gut of pocketbook issues. If what the oligarchs do appears to be self-serving, wealth-building while the rest of us take it on the chin can become a major issue.  It is especially ripe if what appears to ordinary people is that those like Musk who proposes hurting and cutting out federal programs such as Obamacare and Social Security, consumer protections from abusive business practices and unsafe products are the oligarch's way of offsetting the tax cuts and regulatory requirements.

Is Elon Musk an oligarch? He fits my definition of an oligarch, and he is an example of one who attempts to influence political policy and candidates to benefit him.  Musk controls many sectors, including automotive EVs. social media via Twitter/X , and space exploration. He seems to think at this moment that he also controls Congress, the executive branch, and the GOP.  MAGA seems willing to dance to his tune.  The significance of the House vote on whether to shut down the government or fund it on December 20 was that even Elon could not control that.  Trump looked like he, too, was dancing to Musk's tune, following his lead on the budget ceiling, which both Musk and Trump failed to get it included in the final version.
 .
Musk proposes to cut out the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau so he can avoid regulation when he turns X( formerly Twitter) into a consumer bank and service site. He also wants to destroy reports of Tesla crashes. Bad for business. (per an expose by Rachel Maddow 12/16/2024) and  Trump team set to end key vehicle safety rule opposed by Elon Musk's Tesla: report     So now the oligarchs are proposing to cut the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau over outrage that $35 late fee is being reduced to $5 in the waning days of the Biden administration.  The yelp from the finance companies over this outrageous money/profit generation that screwed consumers is heard on FOX.  Whose side is MAGA on? The finance companies or their loyal consumers? Obviously, those getting screwed by this are the consumers; those demanding this profit center are the finance companies.  Let's see how this one plays out.https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/cfpb-has-been-an-absolute-disaster-ej-antoni-explains-what-doge-should-cut-first/

The counter to Hillbilly Vance's remembering his roots in KY

Wherever you stand on Biden staying the candidate,  however you feel about Bernie Sanders or think he is too left, included in this interview, this bit from the first part of the interview with Bernie provides the very best substantive case for Democrats that they are the ones who really care about blue-collar white men in this interview, not billionaire-backed JD Vance.   It is worth listening and I hope this can be put into print. It represents the best rebuttal to Vance in the VP debates, and the content needs to be Dem messages and TV commercials. https://www.msnbc.com/morning-joe/watch/-focus-on-biden-s-record-and-what-he-s-trying-to-do-bernie-sanders-urges-support-for-biden-215248965869?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2R_8SArv87IMzn1TxG-vpAfN4T

Sober up, Democrats, or say goodbye to your dreams.

Updated 7/15/19
Sober up, Dems. I'll be putting my money in this presidential race on a  candidate with appeal in the key electoral states Democrats need to win or liberals can say goodbye to their dreams. What is becoming clear is that the Democrat's winning nominee must appeal to both blue-collar midwest and high African American turn out or Donald Trump will get his second term. What is at stake for Democrats and possible swing voters are policies fundamental to Democrats and independents. Should Trump gain a second term, it is bye, bye Roe v Wade as the Supreme Court gets more anti-Rove v Wade justices. A Trump second term would place in control more energy lobbyists and executives sabotaging climate change green goals., White nationalism would continue undermining meaningful protection of civil and minority voters rights. It means a veto pen in the White House sinking health care insurance, any expansion, more sabotage, if not completely ending any federal program like Obamacare. Trump's record is to kill affordable health care for millions of citizens and neither he nor the GOP has any feasible plan for a replacement. Democrats can quibble over totally replacing Obamacare with Medicare for All or making Medicare a public option and in debates lose any chance at either being implemented if they lose the electoral college vote.
The horse race White House winner is not determined by who gets the most popular votes. If we learned anything from 2016, Democrats won that race but they lost because of the electoral college that weights votes by each state in favor of smaller populated states and against mammoth blue New York and California. So far, the start of this presidential election cycle shows some hope for Democrats to win both the popular vote horse race and the electoral college vote. but it is not only early,  it is also marginal and iffy. In any recent popularity polls, Donald Trump has held onto his base of 42 to 44% losing to several leading Democratic contenders, but he has not expanded it, even with his job approval at 45 to 47%. Recent polls of demographic blocks, issues such as health care and immigration, swing states, and relative position of Democratic aspirants for their party's nomination provide a snapshot of where the race stands today, but as we have seen in these days of modern communication. much can happen quickly to change public opinion.
Early in the election cycle Joe Biden has shown the ability to appeal to win both key demographics and flip some states from red to blue, yet some of Democrats barking at his heels in the announced field have tried to take him down. Democrats should be wary of a circular firing squad of candidates attacking fellow aspirants to boost their own chances. Those lines of attacks could be used by the GOP to defeat them in a general election.

From a July 8 Washington Post email : The economy is the only major issue on which a majority of people approves of how Trump is doing. On foreign policy, it’s 40 percent. On taxes — remember, Republicans passed a tax bill in 2017 to try to get good marks here — it’s 42 percent. On health care — a potent issue Democrats championed to help them win back the House of Representatives last year — it’s 38 percent.
Voters would choose Trump over a socialist
Match-ups between Trump and most 2020 candidates are dead even (except for former vice president Joe Biden, who beats Trump by 10 points among registered voters in this poll). But the pendulum swings clearly toward Trump when voters are asked to choose between Trump and a “socialist." Trump is suddenly decisively ahead.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Where the race stands now
In June, some polls show Biden beating Trump is key states Trump carried in 2016, including Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan, as well as Florida, North Carolina and Arizona. A major portion of the Democratic party is the African American vote. Their turnout and enthusiasm are key to determining who becomes the Democratic candidate.
After the first debate, Kamala Harris attacked Biden on not being favorable enough of busing a decades ago as a way to try to paint him as a person not supportive of the Black community. This worked to her advantage and Biden was caught off guard and fumbled the answer. He took a hit in his polls but maintained his lead and support in the African American community.
As of July 13, Biden maintained a 20 point lead among African American voters in spite of Harris' strategy. Biden's 40 years in high profile public office is less a bane and more of a boon when it comes to appealing to the Black community. Not only does he have a record of defending civil rights on many more issues, but he also served as vice president with Barack Obama, America's first African American president, who trusted him explicitly. He is a known quantity which makes Harris' attacks less effective. Biden's track record is a safe one based on years of trust. Harris, African American/Asian, has been under fire for past support of law enforcement issues opposed by African Americans when she was attorney general of California. Her debate strategy of attacking Biden on busing was a breakout moment for her, showing her political acumen and her debate skills that could take on Trump, moving her up the polling ladder.
Trump and the GOP are banking on the white nationalist elements of their base. To solidify that support, they are launching extreme anti-immigrant and anti-minority policies, hyping fears of a large swath of voters, facing a future where whites will be a minority of voters. This month, Trump announced policies and actions to maintain his hate and fear bonafides, including ICE raids, Vice President Pence visited scary looking male migrants crammed into chain linked holding pens being treated badly. Pence did not visit the facilities housing children separated from parents. Trump announced he is planning to remove the ability of asylum seekers to reach US borders. by forcing them to remain in Mexico. He failed in his attempt to get a citizenship question on the 2020 census form as the SupremeCourt ruled against him, but his effort should at least keep his base happy. Trump media is attempting to paint four women Representatives of color who are outspokenly left of the rest of the Democratic caucus, as representative of all Democratic candidates, sending them "back" to where they came from. , The GOP is also attempting to brand all Democrats as being for open borders in spite of a difference among candidates on the issue of criminalization or decriminalization of undocumented migrants. or plans to secure and improve the immigration system. This may work for Trump, but Biden's 40-year history makes that a hard sell as an older white man with a known history and a reservoir of trust as a rational, thoughtful, public servant.
On health care, Biden has carved out the most moderate approach of the top four, whose position was announced July 13 as keeping Obamacare but providing a buy-in to Medicare, while permitting those who like their private, union, or employer-provided insurance to keep it. Advocates of the more extreme version of Medicare for All would do away with private insurance (except for supplementals) and move consumers into a single payer plan. The GOP's obvious strategy is to scare consumers away from any Democratic by charging them as socialists. Polls show that tagging any candidate as a socialist is a very effective strategy, with Trump beating any candidate branded with that term, fair or not. The tag of "socialism" is especially toxic to Democrats in swing states per an Axios poll. Biden's 40-year record makes sticking him with "socialist" a hard sell.
Obamacare was originally designed to have a public option, government-provided insurance plans like Medicare or one offered to federal employees, to provide competition that would force private insurers to become cheaper. Biden's plan for prescription drugs would be to permit Medicare to bargain with drug companies for the best price. Currently, drug companies and Medicare and Medicaid are forbidden by law to bargain, permitting drug companies to continue to gouge consumers with their own price setting. Biden would also allow consumers to get their prescriptions from providers abroad, giving US drug companies competition they do not have now. Both Sanders and Warren would eliminate private and employer insurance for a Medicare for All plan for everyone, a single payer system more like the Canadian model. Harris has supported legislation of both approaches, the public option, and the Sanders/Warren approach..

Democratic Party is on the verge of blowing it

As a variety of candidates take aim at front runner Joe Biden in order to increase their poll numbers by beating down Biden,  it is the usual Democratic party political stupidity. So like in 2016 the party splits, the losers sit on their hands, and Trump wins. Liberals and Progressives:  How did you like the way that worked out? Then what happens in 2020 and beyond to any form of Medicare for all..as a single payer or as a public option...neither. Then what happens to any steps to deal with global warming...nothing. Then what happens to the Supreme Court? For years to come, expect a Trump court ruling in favor of abolishing Roe v Wade, supporting an imperial presidency, and even declaring any federal health plan, including Obamacare unconstitutional. I hope many will join me in this pledge: I will refuse to support any candidate who speaks ill of another Democrat in the race.
Candidates need to make a case for their platform on issues and let their issue arguments and credentials speak for themselves as a way to differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack. Negative campaigns in primaries are losers for Democrats. They are a circular firing squad.

Recently, some press and candidates are aiming their weapons at the front runner Joe Biden for a history of not being in favor of pro-choice. He has evolved on the issue. In 2008 he announced he was pro-choice. A devout Catholic, he paid a price when the Archbishop of the diocese in Pennsylvania refused to give him communion.  Since 2008  Biden has had a NARAL rating of 100%. He supports Supreme Court appointees who support Roe v Wade. He had supported the Hyde Amendment that bans federal funds for abortions. June 6, he reversed his prior support, citing that formerly free services provided by Plan Parenthood clinics have been so restricted in certain states, that the poor no longer had access. ,  Other attacks have centered on his past hard-line support on law enforcement and other issues. Unlike many of his fellow aspirants,  he has baggage for being a public figure for 40 years at different times,, but what should count is where he stands now on issues and his more recent track record.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_positions_of_Joe_Biden#Abortion,_stem_cell_research,_cloning

Not only do politicians going negative on others competing for their party's nomination create sound bites for GOP general election campaign ads and video clips, but it can also divert or suppress votes to hurt the Democratic party candidate.  One fallout of a split party going for the throats of fellow candidates in order to gain a political advantage is that it generates "; a plague on both your houses; I don't like either candidates"  disgust factor. Bernie Sanders famously proclaimed on CNN during the run-up to the nomination that Clinton "was not qualified to be President" because she did not support the same issues as he did.   The result is for a group of voters to flee to a third party, Greens and Libertarians or sat on their hands.  There is a case to be made that votes for third parties swung the election to Trump by splitting the potential Clinton vote in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Florida and costing her electoral college votes.

Democrats cannot afford to have potential voters sit on their hands in 2020. A recent PEW study of 2016 demographics and attitudes concluded "The data also provide a profile of voting-eligible nonvoters. Four-in-ten Americans who were eligible to vote did not do so in 2016.  "Compared with validated voters,...and nonvoters were much more Democratic."

The Russians were very well aware of the importance of the disgust factor and aimed their very significant social media propaganda efforts to paint Hilliary Clinton in a very unfavorable light, even to the extent of targeting bots and lies and conspiracy theories aimed at her potential voters. Some of that social media targeting was aimed at supporting the candidacy of  Green candidate Jill Stein and Bernie Sanders as a way of splitting Democratic votes.  We know this from both the Mueller Report and the indictments of spies and GRU operatives.  This was not a matter of a few well placed online ads, either. Both the indictments of Russians and the content of the Mueller report reveals the significant extent and effectiveness of the Russian interference.

We have marveled at Russian's sophisticated knowledge of their targeting in key swing states and their knowledge of demographics.  The secret of their sophistication may have been revealed in the Mueller Report as Trump in house polling data was share with the Russians by Paul Manafort's contacts with his business associate, Konstantin Kilimnik, a suspected Russian intelligence operative, but so much of that connection has been  redacted in the Mueller Report version released to the public.  That is why it is important that Congress gets the full unredacted version.

"Trump won 290 Electoral College votes to 232 for Hillary Clinton, as of Wednesday evening, with Clinton topping him in the popular vote. But had the Democrats managed to capture the bulk of third-party voters in some of the closest contests -- Wisconsin (10), Pennsylvania (20), Michigan (16) and Florida (29) -- Clinton would have defeated Trump by earning 307 Electoral College votes, enough to secure the presidency." https://www.cnn.com/2016/11/10/politics/gary-johnson-jill-stein-spoiler/index.html

The gender gap is the GOP's own making

A version of this was published in the Sky Hi News online edition 3 6 2019
https://www.skyhinews.com/news/opinion-muftic-the-gender-gap-is-the-gops-own-making/

The gender gap facing Republicans is no surprise.  In the 2018 midterms, the gulf between women’s vote for Republicans and Democrats is huge. Per Pew Research 59 % of women voted for Democrats, 40% for Republicans. The GOP has become a political home for males, 51% who voted Republican and 47% who went blue in 2018. Demonizing powerful women has become their national past time.

Fox commentator Tucker Carlson has been on a campaign painting man as the victims and claiming the left is conducting a war on men. That is a strange case to make when Republicans have worked overtime to turn off female support. They support without shame or shaming the most amoral, adulterous, women grabber in the history of the White House.  They back anti-women rights in public policies and they become fixated on calling out and demonizing specific strong women politicians.

Three recent objects of disaffection are not even candidates for 2020 presidential cycles, but nonetheless, the attempted effect of their attacks is to paint all women candidates with the same brush. The women attacked have different ideological shades of the left from pragmatic power to traditional liberal to democratic socialists, as do Democratic men, so it is not just ideology driving their fixations.

The current object of right’s most disaffection is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  Her picture is an attention getter for social media postings and her outspoken fearless and clearly stated communication skills get under many skins.  She is as far left as another democratic socialist, Bernie Sanders, but she now occupies his spot as the greatest object to be feared by males on the right if the volume and content of social media postings by right-leaning men are any indications.

For years I have noted that Nancy Pelosi, now serving her second time as House Speaker, has been held up by the GOP as a demon.  Pelosi, too, will not be on the 2020 ballot, but she strikes fear in the hearts of the GOP, not so much because she is a traditional liberal, but because she knows how to wield power as the daughter of a Philadelphia political boss. She expresses herself in non-inflammatory terms, but she has a steely determination and fine-honed use of power.   Recently in a Chuck and Nancy White House meet she stared down President Trump.

The GOP should be proud of their success in turning Hillary Clinton, a traditional liberal, into an uber-demon, painting her as so dishonest she should be locked up.  She is still the object of their scorn and calls for Congressional investigations into her past endure. Why? She is no longer a factor in 2020; Donald Trump is.  She certainly serves as a handy diversion from the Mueller probe.  GOP members of Congress are still demanding investigations into her Uranium One dealings to call a kettle black in the face of Trump’s accused conflict of financial interests as if the allegations concern substance of equal weight and volume.  Multi committee probes and FBI investigations into Clinton resulted in no indictments and guilty pleas, but the story is quite different in the Trump reign.
The public policy initiatives of the GOP feed the impression that the party is anti-women. Rights.   70% of all Americans oppose overturning Roe v Wade but Donald Trump’s stuffing the Supreme Court and lower federal courts with anti-choice lifetime federal judges seriously threatens a woman’s right to choose.   The Kavanaugh hearings for Senate confirmation to the Supreme Court, left a bitter taste in women’s mouths as their GOP male-dominated Senate committee, right-leaning cable talk, and social media, turned Bret Kavanaugh into a victim of unfair attacks as they took   Kavanaugh’s word over Dr. Blasey Ford in a mostly he said, she said situation.  Only Chief Justice Roberts kept a Roe v Wade challenge from setting legal precedent last week that could have limited women’s access to abortion to one clinic in a whole state.
