Cracks in the MAGA base and lessons Democrats can learn from Democratic Socialists

A bevvy of polls this past week consistently show that Trump's approval ratings are sinking to his core base of true believers and core followers. https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/steve-kornacki-new-poll-shows-cracks-forming-in-trump-s-maga-base-254388805882

It remains to be seen how many of those left in Trump's 2024 winning coalition will suck it up like good patriots. The conclusions of a variety of pollsters are that some pretty angry and disillusioned MAGA voters feel Trump failed them to make good on the cost-of-living issues and feel he lied to them. However, there is also a word of warning for Democrats in the MAGA unrest. Democrats could also fail to deliver, as well, if they ever get both houses of Congress and the Oval Office again. The lesson is: do not make promises you know you cannot keep. The success of Democrat Socialists in the primaries contain some very good pointers for traditional Democrats as well.

The "old 'house built on sand is the first to perish ' "is as good as any old saying ever devised. That sand is what Trump promised to do what he did not have the power to do in 2024. He then doubled down on the inevitable failure by shoveling more sand into a developing sinkhole of quicksand while blaming Biden for it. (Given Biden left the economy with 3 percent inflation, now creeping up, and under $4 a gallon gas seems to have been conveniently forgotten by MAGA. )Wth Trump, the buck never stops at the Oval Office desk.

The issues that poll the worst are the management of the economy (the poor get poorer, and the oligarchs and the Trump family get richer). Even foreign policy, launching the Iran war, is hitting the part of the economy l already left in the dust, and most of them get the connection. In the price of oil per barrel raising costs to farmers). The tax cuts to benefit the rich obviously did not trickle down to the rest of us.  Subverting Obamacare and cutting health insurance coverage do not lower, but raise the cost of insurance. (Clever of the GOP to implement it after the midterms, but a warning will be mailed just before Nov. 3.) Launching foreign war ads to the cost of groceries, as well.

Bitten once, voters are not inclined to be bitten again soon. They rightly should be sceptical of anyone of any political stripe promising what they cannot deliver. The Democrats need to be specific about solutions that also sound plausible and limited to the doable.   A vague insinuation that voting for Democrats, instead,  will simply reverse the trend and punish the person causing it may sound appealing, but those who are specific about exactly what they plan to do and have the power and ability to do it will have the most credibility. The most disillusioned are the younger voters who have the sword of Damocles of student debt hanging over their ability to buy a home or even make day-to-day ends meet. It would be wise for Democrats to address these problems, too, if they fear the disillusioned younger generation flees our form of democracy and the wake of a run-amok capitalism that they feel failed them.

A reader responded that at least Trump is transparent when it comes to potential charges: what he is doing is criminal or in violation of the Constitution. Careful there: Transparency with Trump is not because he is honest. With him, it is a strategy to make you think that since it is in the open, it is not a crime. 1) We do not know what or if, anything else is not disclosed or if he is hiding it; especially any tit-for-tat, quid pro quo, and bribery. 2) he has immunity from prosecution thanks to SCOTUS. 3) He knows his immunity ends when he leaves office so he is trying to get immunity from IRS audits and other potential prosecutions.

There is much handwringing and fear permeating moderates in the Democratic Party, and all in MAGAland. Instead of quaking, there are some lessons for all to learn from these upstarts of Democratic Socialists (DA). Democratic Socialists have had some success in primaries, and here is what Democrats should take a page from their playbook. They are plainspoken, ID the winning issues, and give specific achievable solutions. Democratic Socialists have not promised blue sky, but they have been very specific in what they promise, while sounding feasible, too. (Yes, that current DSA message eclipses some of their very unpopular platform planks). They proposed Medicare for all, an easy-to-understand solution to the cost of health care, for example.  They propose building more low-income housing and flooding the market with availability and competition to lower rent costs or the ability to buy the American dream of homeownership., They propose fighting greedy corporations who try to buy up all of the housing they can to control the market, both purchase price and rental. That is another concept voters can grasp.   Getting the heck out of futile wars of choice in the Middle East may be a tough one, given the predicted Iranian chokehold on Hormuz. Simply declaring victory and withdrawing will leave Iran having the Western world slung over the high price per barrel for years is not a good outcome. However, doing stupid acts like Trump's war of choice again in the future is also an idea easily grasped.

However, the price of groceries and gas at the pump was never totally in Trump's power to make good on his promises, but they were in his power to make it worse, which he has done. We do not have a centrally planned economy, so "Zap", he could not edict prices, but he could monkey with elements that would affect grocery prices a bit. Instead, what he did do was tariffs, and Hormuz caused prices to rise. Voters seem to get that. He is right now proposing to flood the market with Argentine hamburger meat to force the price of beef down. In so doing, he is really ticking off ranchers and agriculture-related MAGAs within his base. I feel their pain living in an ag community, and I feel mine at the grocery store, too.

The price per barrel of oil is, and never was, in Trump'scontrol. It is a commodity that is marketed worldwide, immediately sensitive to the forces of supply and demand, and under the control of oil cartels.  One part of the world sneezes, and the rest of the world, including us in America, gets sick, too. Trump has already released oil reserves, and now our reserves are among the lowest in our post WWII history.

Parts of the following also appear in my Substack and Facebook posts and comments :

Semantics:: Democrats do have a problem in messaging. They sometimes use more than 3-syllable words or words not in common usage by "ordinary" people. Trump ridiculed "affordability". Whoever used that in a conversation, he asked.. Maybe it works (and so far it has) because the first four syllables are in plain English. (affordable, get it?). The other pet peeve I have is the use of "grift".  Even I had to run to Webster's for that one to see what it encompassed. However, "grift " for sure was never used as a common term in our family, but it covers much,  from padding one's pockets, greed, to bribery and a lot of dirt in between.  Corruption comes close enough to be nearly encompassing. (Being greedy does not always result in getting rich) . Whatever both are, affordability and corruption, they are part of the same: unfairness. ...which is very much in common usage. "Fairness" brings up another overriding issue: the rich are getting very rich, and the rest of us are seeing our standard of living decrease.  There is a growing outrage that "It just ain't fair!"

"No Kings" served for a time as a substitute for Trump's non-democratic behavior and power grabs, but that sounds quaint, even if it is a non-hackle-raising accusation. Actually, the best parallel to Trump's obsession with gathering all the wealth he can while he can, issuing his own laws, ignoring laws that stand in his way, and punishing those who disobey them or him, or do not comply,  fits the "mob boss" role model the best. Since the venue is government, the best tag is "political mobster" or "political mob boss". Dictator or autocrat he may aspire to be, but he has not beaten down the lower courts totally yet. His preoccupation with vengeance, punishment,  and greed for power and wealth, only for him and those loyal to him, qualifies him as a "mob boss" the best. His corruption is in your face and in the open. The problem with tagging him as a mob boss is he does not look like one; he just acts like one.  The failure of the GOP-dominated Congress and the 6 Trump loyal justices on the Supreme Court who have not put the brakes on him, who have approved his power grabs, are this political mobster's enablers.

We are no longer a nation that is a political 50-50 split; it is now 60-40 to 58-42 split: advantage Democrats

Common wisdom used to be this was a 50 /50 split in the American voters' opinion polls:..half for the GOP and half for Democrats.  That has shifted to about  58 percent to 60% for Democrats and 42 to 40 percent split in approval for the GOP. This is evident even in the 2025 data, study and it does not reflect the recent shift in Hispanic, independent, and young people's votes away from the GOP and MAGA. Today's polls may reflect the shift.  https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2026/03/19/donald-trump-approval-rating/89177997007/

https://yougov.com/en-us/articles/54341-worsening-economic-outlook-donald-trump-iran-voting-march-13-16-2026-economist-yougov-poll

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZTtTtR21YM   recent ABC/Washington Post poll

This is a macro view, but it does not apply to every voting district..

As the GOP loses ground. how much does the loyalty to the MAGA viewpoint play in the GOP. I would have thought it would have been higher than 50%, but that was the finding in a study. https://news.vanderbilt.edu/2025/02/24/majority-of-republicans-nationally-identify-as-maga-for-first-time-in-unity-poll.   The allegiance to MAGA is growing.  Nonetheless, the swing vote within the GOP is still large enough to make any rift significant.,  That does not mean it automatically translates into political power loss.

Support for one or the other side of this voter poll split is also specific to location and the number of Congressional districts, states, or electoral college votes, voting districts that have a record, demographic, and dominance of one side of the divide or another. What it does show is that whatever is considered a swing or near swing district will still determine outcome in both November 2026 midterms and in the 2028 presidential race..  The rest of the voting districts are set in concrete. The electoral college laws are also responsible for this imbalance, which has resulted in nearly every presidential election showing a larger popular vote for Democrats than the winning GOP candidate. The advantage favors the GOP, and Democrats must outperform them with the popular vote. Not every voter who contributed to the 60% non Trump vote wlll vote for Democrats. They could opt to stay at home on election day.

Three factors may influence the remainder of the year. GOP/Trump policies that threaten previous Hispanic voters with ICE cruelty, the struggles of young people saddled with student debt, and AI as an entry-level job opportunity killer. The other is voter suppression of perceived opponent groups:, ICE agents at polling places, and making it difficult for those who are large numbers unfriendly to the GOP, particularly women, such as the SAVE act attempts to do.  Disillusionment by independents and non-MAGA with Trump's promises and failures to make good on them is a third.  This one may be growing thanks to his damage to affordability and entanglement in foreign wars, such as Iran.

The SAVE Act is now being debated in the Senate and is predicted to go down in defeat, even if Trump vetoes the version that survives and needs a 60-vote count to override his veto. Senators, even in some safe states, are not sure who will be hurt more: women or their own, poorer, undereducated rural  White voter base.

The current version of the SAVE proposal makes it hard for those they see as their opponents to vote, but it has a serious backfire in it that makes even GOP Senators uneasy unless they come from ruby red states. The SAVE Act places a burden on women that most men do not have. It requires many women to jump through additional hoops in order to be able to vote. Married or divorced women have to tie their accepted picture ID to their birth certificate to make name changes via marriage or other situations. This will certainly hurt Democrats, but that also will hurt the MAGA base, which is mostly rural, poor, White,  working class, and with low education levels, because they too have to cough up money to get the right photo ID and the accepted documentation of their birth and make it through those administrative hurdles. Elderly in both parties will be hurt, but less in blue higher-income states because they are more likely to have a US passport, which is accepted proof of citizenship/and name conformity. Elderly voters usually trend heavily toward the GOP.  Because of the cost involved in getting a certified birth certificate, passports, or a conforming ID, this can be seen as an unconstitutional poll tax, but that will have to play out in the courts.

Why pick on the women voters anyway?

Today, a 56% majority of women identify as Democrats or lean Democratic, while 37% affiliate with or lean toward the GOP. up 4 percentage points since 2015 and is at one of its highest points since 1992. Among men, there has been less recent change: 48% of men identify with the GOP, and 44% are Democrats or lean Democratic, a long-standing divide. Both gender and educational gaps are expanding.  https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2018/03/20/wide-gender-gap-growing-educational-divide-in-voters-party-identification/

What is fascism and does Trump meet the definition rev.8/13/2025 updated 8/14- 15/2025

Is Trump a fascist of the 1930s type?  If you do not like to call someone a fascist because it is too inflammatory, then call it what you want and look at what he does. The similarity is hard to deny, however. At the very least, Trump is acting like a dictator (a tyrant, a king, an autocrat who rules by a single strong man and ignores or subverts the rule of law and lower court rulings, or creates his own rules and laws  ), the very reason our form of democracy was constructed to prevent.  MUFTIC FORUM BLOG: So is Trump now running for dictator. Fools might hope so.

.The next question is what kind of dictator, a fascist one?  Trump is acting like a dictator and, in many respects, like a fascist one, depending on the definition or criteria. An Australian political scientist in 2013 published a study of 1930s fascist dictators and identified some common characteristics.  In any case, you do not have to have Nazi extermination ovens to still be called a fascist. Are those who support Trump fascists, too? Take the Britt test below. Dr. Lawrence Britt, an Australian political scientist, wrote "14 Defining Characteristics of Fascism" after studying the fascists of the 1930s.

Update: 8/14/2025https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/border-patrol-gov-gavin-newsom-news-conference-los-angeles/#:~:text=Chelsea%20Hylton%20is%20a%20web,WE%20WILL%20NOT%20BE%20INTIMIDATED!%22   This is what fascism looks like. Did the guards go rogue or were they acting on instructions from the White House or a Trump official?  The issue was Texas's dirty trick of attempting to do a mid-decade carve-up of congressional districts so that Trump's minions could fix the 2026 midterms and get more GOP seats.  Newsom was announcing his fighting fire with fire, and this show of Trump's paramilitary border guards, heavily armed, is engaged in pure military-like fear tactics. Welcome to fascism: 2025 style.

Update 8/15/2025  A recruitment poster/ad by ICE:" Join to defend our culture". Homeland Security on X: "Serve your country! Defend your culture! No undergraduate degree required! https://t.co/eKOWvUl2uK https://t.co/IflX0u9Tb8" / X That is an overt appeal to those who like using armed force and being secret masked armed men to "defend your culture". Whose culture? This is not even subtle. It is a dog whistle to those who want to rid our country of migrants who are not white, and so they would show no mercy to anyone, citizens, green card holders, or even those who have no criminal record, grabbing them without warrants, to heck with due process,  if they even looked "Mexican" or Asian..  That is not my culture.  The type of person this ad would have appealed to in the 1930s in Germany would have joined the brown shirts, the SS, and the Gestapo.   This is what fascism looks like.

Update: 8/20/2025:  As part of the White Nationalist influence ii the GOP as personified by Project 2025's anti-DEI purpose, now the Trump regime is trying to rewrite official history (revisionism like the Chinese and Russian communists undertook to justify their policies) by pressuring the Smithsonian to stop portraying slavery as so terrible. Trump says the Smithsonian focuses too much on 'how bad slavery was' If the Smithsonian complies, it will become the Trump Propaganda History icon.  Its lies will be revealed by the preservation of the real history of slavery in America by many institutions not dependent on federal funding.

This recent outrage, coupled with recruitment appeals to racists to join ICE "to defend your culture", is the newest example of the racist nature of some of Trump's core supporters.. The setting up of those who are of a different color as a threat to the ruling race to rationalize such behavior is also a characteristic of fascism.

If you accept the idea that Trump is a dictator and probably a fascist one,  are those who support Trump fascists, too? His support is holding firm with a very slight erosion. My guess is either those still in the GOP think this is a bunch of liberal noise or they are fine with having a dictator or even a fascist as their leader/president. He has a tiny slippage in the most reliable public poll I consult. Has Trump lost any support from Republicans? Here's what a new Pew poll found If there is any slippage in general polls o voters, it is that he has turned off significant numbers of independents who are not smitten with hero worship and blind faith in him or who fear his damage to the economy in the near future and/or still care whether democracy survives. Polls turn sour on Trump as he hits new lows with independents     The worst stuff has not hit the economy yet. MUFTIC FORUM BLOG: MAGA supporters cheer Trump's economy, but the stuff has not hit the fan yet

For those who wonder where they fit in, take the Britt test

In bold print are Britt's defining characteristics of fascism. In Italics, my reason for contending Trump is meeting or not meeting those characteristics.

Nationalism: saying one's own country is better than other countries. Not exactly: Trump contends the US is failing and other countries are taking advantage of us.
Disdain for human rights: The core issues are around due process, and cruelty in imprisonment and snatching off the street because a person looks like a "Mexican". Trump would welcome those from Norway, however, to migrate to the US. Obviously, white people are not targeted.
Scapegoating: blaming someone else for the country's problems: Trump is constantly whining about migrants from south of the border who are rapists and murderers and criminals; now he and his supporters are hinting they want to stop birthright citizenship and revoke refugee status, as well as revoke already granted citizenships.
Putting the military first: Only if it pledges loyalty to Trump, passes his test for that, or is not led by women, non white people, gays, etc. The assumption is that black and brown people and women are inherently not as competent as men. More faith is put in paramilitary ICE, masked, not in uniform, pardoning militias, unregulated, from violent acts that were found guilty by juries for insurrection. Insurrection is fine if it is done in support of Trump, is the message. His use of the national guard on streets does not address underlying problems of homelessness and crime, but is only for show, a temporary drama, and an attempt to see if he can get away with declaring a bogus emergency, nationally or locally as a way to assert his willingness to use the military against their own fellow citizens as his campaign of fear and suppression of demonstrations of opposition.
Sexism: saying men are better than women: End DEI, equal rights for genders, and a mantra incompetent in military (as above) and tolerates Hegseth's religion that women shouldn't even be able to vote; found in civil suit Trump was liable for rape, has: boasted of p grabbing and now his relationship with Epstein, his attempt to sidestep and hide evidence. is causing suspicion as he is hiding something and apparently fears exposure.
Control of mass media: telling newspapers and other sources of news what they can and cannot tell the people: Threatens to yank broadcast licenses, forces broadcast media mergers until they fire objectionable comedians; cuts funding the public broadcasting; stops access to White House briefings if he does not like the reporter.
Focus on national security: Crickets on this one. Trump undermines cybersecurity funding, trusts Russia's CRU more than the US CIA,... Uses bogus claims of national emergency to bring in active military and national guard; once, Trump tried to get the military to shoot black lives matter protestors in the legs. Ok if Russia interferes in elections or land-grabbing aggression, undermines NATO. Hints would not honor article 5, does not care if Europe feels threatened if Russia takes all of Ukraine, advocates peace at any price, even if it endangers world or regional peace. Thinks appeasement works.
Close ties between religion and government: Follows and achieves white nationalist Christian plan (Project 2025) to replace the personnel in the various branches and agencies with their ideologues..
Protection of businesses and corporations: Destroys or subverts consumer and environmental protection agencies; gives special tax breaks to corporations; tells lies that tariff costs are not passed on to customers in higher prices
Suppression of labor power: preventing labor unions from becoming powerful: against right-to-work laws; promotes non-union auto assembly shops, puts flunkies in charge of the NLRB
Disdain for intellectuals and the arts: telling people not to listen to scientists, scholars, and artists, took over the Kennedy Center; trashes White House historical decor with gold gilt; anti-science in control of scientific agencies like Robert Kennedy Jr.; calls any evidence of global warming a fraud; disbands key climate and weather forecasting agencies. Dictates to Harvard and Columbia what curriculum should be, or lose government contracts, and then uses them to cow every other research institute associated with a private university with similar threats
Focus on crime and crimefighting: Ignores crimes that are committed by supporters or pardons those convicted of crimes who he likes, January 6 rioters, and even criminals and murderers imprisoned in foreign prisons. Using "national security" bogus excuses to crack down on local enforcement agencies in DC and LA, while threatening other major cities that have black mayors.
Corruption: conducted in plain sight with his cryptocurrency, with sales and investments based on his name and position, selling access to foreign interests to him for dinners, etc, hiding campaign contributions in crypto; accepts gifts (747) from princes;
.Fraudulent elections: Claims any vote where the tally goes against him is always because the election was stolen or there was fraud, always without evidence. Tried to get loyalists to get control of voting machines; claimed over 60 state elections were fraudulent in 2020, and no court found evidence of it; Still claims the 2020 election was stolen but never coughed up evidence after 5 years of trying.. Instructed Texas to start gerrymandering districts to get 5 more House seats and in order to misrepresent voters' will, deprive racial minorities of Congressional representation, and fix the 2026 elections. They want to federalize elections and take the administrative power away from states, giving Trump the power to more easily control the outcome to benefit him. Trump wants to control the vote count by federal control of voting machines and banning mail in ballots. He got his advice from Putin, per the New York Times. MUFTIC FORUM BLOG: Trump's newest attack democracy's rule by people via a vote. ban mail in ballots and voting machines

Still riding with Biden July 11 and July 12,13, 14.15

July 15 update: The discussion topic about changing horses in the middle of the race is now on ice due to the near-assassination attempt on Trump. By the time the RNC convention is over, it will be even closer to the middle of the race, where campaign organization, funding, and delegates are already in place and will be seriously disrupted, too late to reorient to a different candidate. Internal polling will have been digested, and Biden will have had even more opportunities to demonstrate his mental acuity, putting "concerns" on ice also, as he has done post-debate and as he "gets his Irish up".

If turning down the heated rhetoric, fascism, and other trigger words are avoided, it is easier than ever to make the points of what Trump's 2nd term would bring that would be a danger to ordinary Americans and make America weaker, not greater. Trump's personal toughness only reveals better judgment or change in his caring about others other than himself or the middle class.  Running against Project 2025 and the RNC platform related to it gives that chance.  Trump will be put in a bind distancing himself on issues in risking ticking off the base who support the contents of either.  Trump cannot get away with distancing itself from such very unpopular positions.

July 12 update: I am listening to comments about Biden, his impressive performance at the NATO presser, and his mental acuity. One of the strangest was, well, he showed great acuity when he talked about foreign policy but not when he talked about his own health. Come on....either he has sufficient acuity in his brain, or he doesn't. There may be other matters at work here...like he is getting attacked because of his age. How does acuity disappear or appear, given the topic???????

It appears that the political professionals look at their polls and get cold feet. Past polls show no Democrat can beat Trump, including Harris, and Biden has historically low approval rates. Sure, he does; if you ask, he is too old, and that has been consistent for the last 3 years as, yes, while Biden guided us for the best recovery from COVID in the world. If you ask if given the choice between Trump and him nationally in public polls (very unreliable), the answer is different: a tie. His approval ratings may be historically low, but his opponent is historically a fright, called by those close to him when he was president unfit for the job, determined to upend democracy and establish a dictatorship/(kindliy called an autocracy,0 with Trump at the top and a supreme court already in his pocket greenlighting criminal acts. The GOP anointed candidate is threatening to upend very popular government policies such as saving Ukraine and NATO while making his Project 2025 administration the 'culture of life", replacing civil service with a corrupt and incompetent spoils system full of political hacks, and ending any programs that benefit even their own constituents like, Medicaid and further destroying rural health providers whose funding has been saved by getting paid for their services via Medicaid. I live in a rural area, and I get it. If Democrats can get heads out of their behinds, maybe others in the MAGA rural world could get that message, too.

My thoughts about the political pros who said, well, Trump will attack him for being feeble are In these past two weeks, all that has happened is that Trump has been given the gift of sound bites uttered by fearful once-Biden supporters. It is as if the press and those wanting the torch to be passed are laying the groundwork for self-fulfilling their own prophecy. The ultimate key to Biden's decision is as he said it: no path to victory, even as Harris would do worse. The final decider will be internal polls of 3 battleground states and Biden's own interpretation of them.

The past two weeks after the awful debate have been nothing about that, so Biden should remove himself. This reminds me of the FDR phrase, but in the reverse of their cold feet, it is: you are fearing your fear itself. What if internal polls (more accurate) show even Harris cannot beat Trump? In fact, the whole nature of the Trump campaign will turn this into the most racist white nationalist/misogynist campaign in history, fearing Harris' credentials as the point person on women's rights, Trump's Achilles heel. In short, if Biden defers to Harris as the candidate, the entire focus of the rest of the presidential campaign will be different. It is still a crap shoot, a gamble,., but a different game with a new deck of cards dealt.

July 11 We need to get this settled ASAP/ So far, all we have done has made it harder for Biden to win, giving Trump et al. sound bites ad infitim.   Of all the nerve: after engineering the flubbed and awful reporting and opinion pages demanding Biden step down, the New York Times dares write the opinion piece today that Trump is unfit to be president. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/11/trump-new-york-times-00167529 ThNYT: Trump unfit to lead  after they just gave Trump a boost to his campaign. Let's get this matter settled now, but what is happening is that everyone is looking at internal polling (these public polls are all over the place). They often ask the wrong questions anyway. Four different questions get four different answers:

1), is Biden too old? That one in any poll is "yes".

The question #2 is: Given what you know now, which would you vote for: Biden or Trump. Still, a tie, unchanged, in national public opinion polls, but the real polls that count are in 3 battleground states. Voters had already "discounted" Biden's age.

#3 The third question is whether Kamala Harris's poll would be better in question number 2 than Biden's. So far, I haven't heard anything. Notice that the Black Caucus voted to support Biden over anyone else, including Harris. Maybe they know something the rest of us do not. Above all, they are realists.

#4. What if Biden fails to complete the term? Who cares if Trump wins. My answer:If Biden wins, the team with Harris at the top is more than capable of continuing on.

Simple minds for simple solutions explains US anti democracy MAGA

One of the most appalling crowd reactions I have seen recently was of a MAGA rally that responded with cheers to Trump when he proclaimed that he would be a dictator for one day.  I have come to the conclusion that the problem is that those with simplicity-loving minds want direct lines to the simple solutions they seek. They do not welcome clutter like facts, data,  logic, and warnings of unintended consequences. Simple minds for simple solutions explain the USA's anti-democracy MAGA. If the enemy of Trump is the kind of today's democracy, simply replace it with an autocracy/dictatorship pledged to Trump. Simple, right?. That control of the"deep state"  and replacing all branches with loyalists would get Trump's agenda  (whatever that is) done. It is a very simple concept.

Why do I think that?

Many MAGAs I encounter on social media or see and hear/see interviews of "persons on the street', or attendees at Trump rallies on TV and think they must like it simple. For them often slogans, insults,  and memes,  parroting back Trump and MAGA's phrase of the day,  suffice to advocate for their candidate. Repeat it enough and flood the zone with them. We'll eventually get it and agree, they think. Arguments and evidence to the contrary are dismissed as  "ramblings" and are irrelevant or fake or just too complex, attention-diverting,  and confusing.

Some simplistic thinking is because Americans do not know even the basics of the "blessings of liberty" our democracy brings.s National Survey Finds Just 1 in 3 Americans Would Pass Citizenship Test - Institute for Citizens & Scholars (citizensandscholars.org)

In Trump's occupancy of the White House ending January 2021, he frequently tried to increase his power but those around him told him he could not because of laws and the Constitution, and he had to back off. (Use of active military to put down street demonstrations, firing and replacing the Justice Department and the FBI with loyalists,  and firing 50K civil servants, replacing them with loyalists using schedule F, for example).  The current practice of democracy gets in his way, so he promises to finish what he started in a second term.  Immediately, he would replace those loyal to the Constitution with "yes people"(Project 2025), including regulatory agencies (delicensing opposition media), and continue his campaign to control Congress with threats of primaries, revenge, and retribution. The Justice Department would threaten and be weaponized against his political opponents  He already thinks he has control of the  Supreme Court dominated by loyalists he appointed .. Once in control of all three branches comes the next step. He has said he wanted to tear up, alter, or gut enforcement of, the Constitution itself.

That control of the"deep state"  and replacing all branches with loyalists would get Trump's agenda  (whatever that is) done. It is a very simple concept. It is also the end of democracy as we have known it. Therefore, simplistic slogans and memes, parroting back Trump and MAGA's lines of the day, suffice to advocate their simple solutions and are the only proof and evidence they need. Arguments and evidence to the contrary are "ramblings" and are irrelevant or fake or just too complex to comprehend..

Most recent polls peg those and fellow travelers of MAGA at somewhere between 30 and 43 percent of the GOP, depending on the degree of agreement or vested self-interest in business and political job positions. The goal is then for MAGA to rule over everyone else who, they hope, has other things to worry about in their lives than some abstract theory of democracy.

MAGA is indeed simple, and MAGA is indeed foolish and dangerous. The" tear down democracy" crowd is besotted with it or dismisses it as a joke, Trump being Trump, and he is a martyr dumped on with so many court filings.. If Trump were to get into the Oval Office again, on day one, he could spend all day signing decrees, orders, and appointments to advance his control and power, which would have forever repercussions. It depends on how quickly and effectively he is in the four years we foolishly gave him to consolidate his control over all three branches of government with his promoting the tools of fear and favor.

The only barriers to Trump after day one would be the wide variety of state and federal judges who have sworn to uphold the rule of law, not the rule of a person. MAGA takeover of the GOP House is complete, as those who oppose him simply resign or bow to the threat of primaries in their gerrymandered safe districts. The same fate without the gerrymander opportunity would contaminate the Senate if they got the majority. again. The executive branch is the easiest to dominate using Schedule F and the" ready to go day one Project 2025'. Trump has made it clear he will appoint only loyalists to him to the military brass and advisors who always say "Yes boss", as they take over the voting machines and shut down opposition media via delicensing and put the fear of loss of jobs in the 50 thousand federal civil servants.

This is not a fantasy or an apocalyptic prediction because the same story has been repeated time and again without exception, from Putin to Tito (my hands-on, personal experience) to Orban to Moduro., They got there initially through the consent of the mobs or were viewed as heroes bringing help to the working poor and the end of lawless chaos.. In the long term, as every instance in modern post-World War II history has shown, once that autocrat's power is consolidated, it rarely is reversed. peacefully or by violence.. Control is gained and kept by fear and favor. The autocrat and his minions and their subjects had adjusted, and as time went on, they became even more dedicated to keeping the favor of power and feared the loss of it and their jobs if they did not pledge their allegiance to the "boss", the system of corruption favoring them, controlling the voting process, and what information the populace gets ( no dissension, please), always waiting in the wings. the iron fist of the active military to put down the "street."

Trump has not ceased touting that the 2020 election was stolen from him.  That is his core rationale to the crowd for taking over the deep state, wanting to call on the active military to seize voting machines, inciting the January 6 militia and rioters,  and becoming a dictator. Those who continue to think simply, who still believe that Trump won the 2020 election, can only be intentionally blind and willfully and conveniently ignorant to keep swallowing that Trump claim. In the past three years, no forensic audits or research funded by the Trump campaign or allies found enough fraud to overturn the 2020 elections, nor did over 60 court cases.  The real fraud is Trump's "Stop the Steal" rhetoric or as his opponents call it "the big lie".Trump has not ceased touting that the 2020 election was stolen from him.  That is his core rationale to the crowd for taking over the deep state, wanting to call on the active military to seize voting machines, inciting the January 6 militia and rioters,  and becoming a dictator.

Trump whines and claims he is the victim of all of the criminal charges and lawsuits. For those who think Trump is a victim of the legal process, no one in history has ever been treated like this, as he and his loyal advocates and followers turn a blind eye to any evidence or data revealed to them by people under oath. No sitting president has ever tried to stay in office when they lost an election, either.

The Supreme Court ruled that Trump was not immune from civil suits for his behavior while president. Some of those court cases he whines against re Stormy Daniels, rape, Colorado ballot eligibility,  and his company's fraud are civil. It does not result if found liable in jail (if perjury in trial not committed), but either loss of money or stopping an activity.  The main criminal case ot watch could result in jail time if Trump loses is Jack Smith's federal DOJ case against his part in January 6.  If Trump is elected in Nov. 2024, he could pardon himself if he is found guilty.  However, the Georgia case is a state criminal case, and he could not pardon himself if found guilty.

Why Biden feels frustrated that Biden'economics are not felt in the polls, but it is temporary.

This post has been incorporated in January 7 and 17, 2024, updates on the topic.

Americans are actually pretty happy with their finances (axios.com)

Recently there was some good news. US Consumer Confidence Increased Again in December (conference-board.org)  Consumer confidence indicators improved, but not before Biden's approval ratings tanked (his handling of the Israel-Hamas war was a factor too), but long term and until  November 2024, it will be about how consumers feel themselves about the economy.

Consumer confidence is also tied to consumer price inex, as well.  Prices go up, and they lose confidence.  Going down, prices are slow to register, but it happens eventually.  The most sensitive to consumers are prices at the pump. The reason Biden gets frustrated is that one fact playing the most in consumers' minds is how much it costs to fill up a tank at the pump.  The problem is, that Biden has little control over it since prices per barrel are set by the oil cartels abroad, and demand and supply depend upon consumers' actions, refinery capacity, and supply availability.. One thing Biden should get credit for is increasing supply. Record U.S. oil production is pushing prices down (axios.com)

‘Pipin’ Hot’: Fox Business Gleefully Reports on Record U.S. Oil Production, Gives Biden Credit For Replenishing Strategic Reserve (msn.com)

Prices always peak in spring and summer and decline later. https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/gasoline-prices-explained#:~:text=Retail%20gasoline%20prices%20are%20mainly,intense%20pressure%20on%20available%20supplies.  That is also true for Trump if he gets another term.  If that is so, November 2024 should help Biden if prices go down.   Measures of gasoline price change : Beyond the Numbers: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov)    When Trump left office, national price at the pump per gallon was $2.20, but that was because, between 2019 and November 2020, demand went down 14+%.  Demand dropped, and prices followed.  Nonetheless, he likes to take credit for it." But looking just at the recent rise can be misleading, or at least incomplete. For one thing, a year ago, the United States was battling yet another wave of COVID-19 cases, large parts of the economy were still shuttered, and demand for gas was way down. Estimated consumption in 2020 was 534 gallons per driver, down 14.4% from 624 gallons in 2019"  Gas prices are up, but this has happened many times for many reasons | Pew Research Center

Drill baby drill, shouts Trump from his platform and the gullible cheer. Wait a minute, uninformed, the US is producing and exporting the most oil in history.  Not only that, we have offset Russian and OPEC, and Ukriane factors.    "Not only is the U.S. producing more oil than any country in history, but the amount of oil (crude oil, refined products and natural gas liquids) that it is exporting is near the total production of Saudi Arabia." As 2024 Approaches U.S. Leads Global Crude Oil Production (forbes.com)    Biden can take credit for increasing supply,Record U.S. oil production is pushing prices down (axios.com)

Nonetheless, that is politics, like it or not.  Prices go up, and opponents point blame; prices go down, and opponents shut up.    So...let us look at the relationship between price per gallon and how consumers feel (confidence).   Now that the price per gallon has really dropped, consumer confidence is going back up.as the price at the pump goes down.  Today, it is good news for Biden...and again in November 2024.

We are no longer a 50-50 nation but a 60-40 one on public policy issues

One of the dilemmas of politics is that when it comes to public opinion of Biden v Trump, it looks like, given the moment, it is 46% v 46 percent, but on  certain public policy issues, the GOP polling is at best around 40% and below.   That is true whether the question is about abortion, Obamacare,, and democracy v autocracy/dictatorship. The wind is in Biden's sails on all three because all three will affect individuals' lives for the following reasons: keeping women in control of their lives instead of a  government telling them, giving people a chance to protest, make their case, and be heard and then counted in a fair and free vote, and a feeling of security that they can continue to afford health care for themselves and their family, thanks to Obamacare and whether they depend on it now or may see a need in the future.

Trump is on the wrong side of those three issues, bent on consolidating his appeal to the 40% with his newest call for ending Obamacare. Why Trump's vow to repeal Obamacare is a gift to Democrats (axios.com)   https://www.kff.org/interactive/kff-health-tracking-poll-the-publics-views-on-the-aca

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/trump-vows-to-replace-obamacare-with-his-own-alternative/ar-AA1m1tQH?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=DCTS&cvid=98071fbc094c42be8ac2b13479f19510&ei=24

We have heard that from the GOP the day Obamacare became law. They have this great plan which somehow never materializes. Just trust them, they say. Then comes Trump. Trust him, he says. Ok. Show us how and what. Otherwise it is the usual GOP BS, only you make it your brand as well.

It is also true about democracy v autocracy. About 18%  of Americans want an autocracy; another 22% lean that way or are tolerant.  That 40% either favor or don't care whether we have a democracy or actually support a dictatorship like Trump is promising is frightening, but not a majority either. However, 48% of Republicans favor authoritarianism.  The good news is that there is a 20% tilt for continuing democracy as we know it, and there are some of the 20% of fellow travelers favoring autocracy are not that solid. https://www.prri.org/research/threats-to-american-democracy-ahead-of-an-unprecedented-presidential-election/.

So far as abortion is concerned, every red state permitting something similar to Roe V Wade to be voted on has supported choice. Few US adults support full abortion bans, an AP-NORC poll finds | AP News

The economy and Biden's economics are praised by the experts but not by the voters, and we have no idea what they will be the mood a year from now. Making a positive case for the economy has been a bust. Biden delivers, ok, but voters still resent prices have not returned to pre-covid, and interest rates are a killer. Border security is an unresolved issue.  The answer is that Biden and the Democrats need to make their case for re-election to stop Trump and MAGA to protect choice, democracy, and their health care for now, as it appears Trump has the GOP nomination sewed up.

From the Washington Post article, here's why the legal issue facing Trump has little or no resonance with Republicans. 4 out 5 think it is political persecution: "Despite the obvious evidence for Trump’s wrongdoing — the Capitol riot, the documents found at Mar-a-Lago, the attempts to overturn the election results in Georgia — most Americans told YouGov pollsters in August that they viewed the charges as intended to block Trump politically. About 4 in 5 Republicans held that view." The significance of these trials is that they fortify fear of a second-term Trump. Still, the worst-case scenario is that they will not be resolved and will be slow walked to after November 2024 and fence-sitting voters will be left in ignorance about whether the Big Lie was truth or fantasy.  It is central to the democracy v dictatorship issue but not fatal because Trump's recent words about his future plans are plenty to make the case:  he is a wannabe dictator.  MUFTIC FORUM BLOG: Trump is running on a platform to become a dictator, updated 12/11/2023

Here's the problem: National polls mean little if they are not overwhelmingly widespread.  They must be more than majority opinion in a specific number of swing states to affect the outcome of the electoral college, which, right now, tilts the election to exaggerate the impact of rural, conservative states.   The bad news is that the electoral college system causes outcomes that do not favor the majority of public opinion to be the winners. For that reason, for any issue to determine the outcome of the presidential race, public opinion must be in the 60% range in favor of continuing democracy or pro-choice, for example. 50-50 split is not good enough. Why fewer American voters matter in presidential elections - The Washington Post  The presidential elections may be rigged, but they are rigged in favor of Trump and the GOP..  The Republican Electoral College Advantage | Cook Political Report s Why fewer American voters matter in presidential elections - The Washington Post  The issues of abortion, democracy v dictatorship, and keeping Obamacare have that widespread and public opinion-supported potential.

Grannies' revolt against Trump's COVID19 attitudes updated December 7, 2020

And here is how it played out in the November election.
https://www.brookings.edu/research/2020-exit-polls-show-a-scrambling-of-democrats-and-republicans-traditional-bases/ Noteworthy:" There was also less Republican support among older segments of the population: ages 45 to 64 and ages 65 and older. This decrease in Republican support was even more pronounced for 45- to 64-year-old whites: from 28% in 2016 to 19% in 2020 (see downloadable Table A). This is evident in several battleground states."  It was a shift from 2016 ,  particularly significant in heavily retirement population in Arizona which helped Biden win there.

GRANNIES' REVOLT updated September 1, 2020

Joe Biden, August 31 speech, said that the social security fund would be depleted by 2023. That is because social security funding depends on payroll tax which has been suspended as part of the COVID stimulus. It could be saved by paying for it from the general fund. which Biden prefers. Trump and the GOP for years have wanted to privatize it.. Paying for it would be by the casino of Wall Street. If Trump is re=elected and the Senate is still in GOP hands.and that the legislative fight will be epic. Trump cannot enact that big of change by executive order, but like so many issues like he tries to move funds around to legislate changes in legislatively approved uses.. He has often been rebuffed by the Supreme Court, but as he stuffs the Court with conservatives, and will complete his control of the Court in a second term if the GOP remains red..

Released figures July 24 were the deaths attributed to COVID and 8 out of 10 of them were senior, those over 65.

Update July 29, per a July 22 poll: The revolt continues: https://www.nbcnews.com/…/who-s-behind-trump-s-big-polling-…
Per NBC News and republished in Cook's Political Report show huge shifts in voter demographics since 2016. The most dramatic are seniors, showing a 20 point swing, now favoring Biden, and impressive college-educated whites showing a 12 point swing, also now more than ever favoring Biden. These two blocks are likely voters. Seniors got the message: COVID and Trump's willingness to throw them under the bus in a haste to open for business...and they are the most vulnerable group to COVID-19.

Update July 4. 2020
For those over 65, the message should be"we need to keep older people from dying from it". Older people are the ones who die; 80% of the deaths from COVID 19 are older ones. Even if older people follow every guideline and follow safer at home or stay at home, those who are younger are the spreaders and bring it home. So long as the virus rages in the younger population, the danger to seniors will not diminish. What this shows is that the administration does not care about older people, and given his plunging polls with that group, they have gotten the message. Update: July 21, 2020. The last to get the message are residents of the Villages, a huge retirement settlement in Florida, where 2/3 are registered Republicans and "they can tell who are Democrats by the ones who wear masks". They swallowed the Trump cool-aid. They had kept the virus out until recently and now they are experiencing it themselves. The President was caught recently wearing a mask. Something as gotten to him that perhaps he is indeed in danger of losing some of the most hard-core White senior support to be found..in the Villages itself., if not owed to a political conversion but to the experience of having the disease and surviving. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/20/us/coronavirus-florida-elderly.html
https://www.newyorker.com/…/donald-trumps-big-problem-with-…
This article, drawing from numerous polls, shows this group he carried in 2016 has flipped to favor Biden. In some instances, it is as much as a 12% swing in that demographic. The swing is particularly noticeable in the swing states that gave him the electoral college win in 2016 with narrow margins.

Retaining the support of seniors is central to Trump’s reëlection chances. But a number of recent polls show that he has slipped badly in this key demographic.

Some pointed Facebook remarks from ordinary people: https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/dontkillgrandma?__eep__=6&hc_location=ufi

July 2020

  • Trent Todd You are correct. The reason we have been asked is to sow down the spread for hospital capacity. Where your comment got my dander up. For only 1% we are to tank our economy.?  As a person in my 80's 80% of the dead are over 65. What that means for me is that if I get to a hospital there may be a ventilator should I need one. If I go on a ventilator, I have a 20% chance of surviving. If I survive in the hospital, and was sick enough,to be there, I will have lung damage. Pray I am not in a nursing home, either. If you are sick enough to go to the hospital, you will be rejected to join the military at any age now. Lung damage is anticipated and found. The only protection seniors have is to stay at home and pray no one, even my kids bring it home. In New York, at one point, 66% o new hospital cases were of stay at home seniors who brought the disease to them. The masks are the only defense we have, and there are knuckleheads who think they are immune, but who are asymptomatic who take it to anyone else...so they do no wear masks. So when you say: live with it or tank the economy, for me it is a matter of life or death. You may see it as a trade off,; I see it as quite something else...
July 13, 2020: Dialog with a knucklehead

Continuing with the June 13 posting.

Trump made a devil's bargain and seniors noticed they drew the short stick. His callous attitudes toward seniors have taken a toll. So what if the infection death rate increases. for seniors The administration looks at it as a tradeoff; a balancing act. However, there has been an unanticipated political price to pay for it. The political backlash is already being felt as Trump's polls show seniors' support of Trump had swung to Biden in a short time as the number of dead from COVID-19 rose to over 100,000 by the end of May, and was projected to be 134,000 by August 1. Seniors have been the most predictable voters and Trump-supporting demographic until late April, but no longer., especially in swing states Trump needs to win, per https://www.usnews.com/news/elections/articles/2020-05-29/older-voters-support-joe-biden-over-trump-amid-coronavirus-pandemic This is no minor loss for Trump. Seniors make up one-quarter of voters and the most reliable voters who turn out to vote. In 2016, Trump carried seniors by 10 points It is now reversed. Morning Consult tracking poll April 20, "By a nearly 6-to-1 margin, people 65 years old and older say it’s more important for the government to address the spread of coronavirus than it is to focus on the economy. "  It is especially true in states with large numbers of seniors, such as Arizona.
https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2020-06-10/trump-coronavirus-protests-senior-voters-arizona
Even in spite of senior support tanking, Trump beat the drum for the nation to open for business, ready or not, as he tried to bury the CDC handbook on how to do it safely. (It was finally released with administration pleasing revisions) The cost of increased deaths is worth reviving the economy is his implied message. Trump doubled down May 21 when he made it clear that if there is a return of the virus in the fall, he will not close down the country (though he does not have the power to require states to comply). May 22, again he ruled all houses of worship re-open, though he likewise does not have the power to force states to comply. In both cases, he is doing nothing but harming seniors, the most frequent churchgoers, and the most vulnerable under a live and let die "edict". He does not care about seniors' health yet he hopes to get their vote. Seniors take little comfort from Trump's right-wing supporters who poopoo the death rate of seniors from COVID, since there are so many "co-morbidity" questions. Seniors are not stupid. They know their age makes the more vulnerable to death if they do get COVID 19 and they need special care and attention. The callousness of such Trumpers toward their condition adds fuel to the fires of their disillusionment with Trump.
One senator estimates that the good news is only 3.4% of the US population will die from COVId 19. At least he thinks that is good news.  https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/gop-senator-no-more-than-3-4-of-our-population-may-die.html?fbclid=IwAR0fPPTXAGrBKSqP_LmTzOP4175TsMqm60-P3RrMOW3QuOjCsqcO6T3xGLI
"White House National Economic Council chairman Larry Kudlow claimed in an interview that “The cure can’t be worse than the disease, and we’re gonna have to make some difficult trade-offs.” Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said on live television that “lots of grandparents” are willing to “take a chance” on their survival for the good of the economy. Brit Hume of Fox News said it’s “entirely reasonable” to let family members die for the stock market. "
Then there was FOX person Bill O'Reilly who callously proclaimed ""many were dying from coronavirus were on their last legs anyway: https://thehill.com/homenews/media/491994-bill-oreilly-many-dying-from-coronavirus-were-on-last-legs-anyway Glad I am not a grandparent of Kudlow, Patrick, Johnson, O'Reilly, and Hume" given how much they care about older people.

The silliness from the rightwing Trumpers is also not lost on seniors when they hear from Trumpers who claim COVID 19 is a hoax, a conspiracy by the left to make Trump look bad or to hurt business.by exaggerating death and cause of death statistics.  Particularly hard hit were senior care facilities, accounting for half of seniors' death in some countries.  To turn the virus into a left-wing conspiracy assumes that every country in the world was in on the plans, too,(their findings were similar, especially in Sweden that did not close down business) and almost every  US coroner or the MD stating the cause of death (held to a uniform standard, too) was in on the conspiracy. The conspiracy would have to assume tests for the virus were mostly false positive. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/16/across-the-world-figures-reveal-horrific-covid-19-toll-of-care-home-deaths

Trump's antidote to his tanking polls is not to become more loving and caring for elders. The reason older people are reconsidering their past support him is not limited to his response to COVID 19, as the LA Times article suggests, but to make "law and order" an issue, to scare seniors back into the fold., making them think rioting Black people are out to get them. His plans took an unexpected turn when his November rival Joe Biden was quick to oppose the slogan of "defund police"., too. Biden yanked the rug from under Trump's strategy. Incoming attacks from the left-wing of Biden's party who backed the anti defund police advocacy was hefty, but polls are showing Biden was on the right track in this semantics war,. The slogan,"defund police', is getting little support (16-32% depending on the poll). The left also failed to listen to what Biden was saying: He wanted to use federal dollars as a carrot and stick to induce changes in policing and to give more to mental health and social services support of police.

The criteria for reporting deaths to officials have been changed: one figure is for those whose death certificates have COVID 19 as the cause of death and one figure is for those whose cause of death may not be listed as COVID 19 but occurs among people with COVID 19.

From the Colorado State Health Department web site.:
Beginning May 15, the department began reporting the number of deaths in two ways:
  • The number of deaths among people with COVID-19. This represents the total number of deaths reported among people who have COVID-19, but COVID-19 may not have been the cause of death listed on the death certificate. This information is required by the CDC and is crucial for public health surveillance, as it provides more information about disease transmission and can help identify risk factors among all deaths across populations.

  • The number of deaths among people who died from COVID-19: This represents the total number of people whose death was attributed to COVID-19 as indicated on a death certificate. This number is determined by the CDC and is updated daily for dates through the previous Saturday.
Important things to know about these two datasets:

  • The numbers of deaths due to COVID-19 and deaths among people with COVID-19 should not be added together to determine a total death count. They are separate numbers.

  • The numbers of deaths due to COVID-19 and deaths among people with COVID-19 are reported from two different systems that are updated on different timelines. These numbers cannot be compared day-to-day to determine how many deaths have occurred in each category.

  • The number of deaths due to COVID-19 are not necessarily included in the number of deaths among people with COVID-19. After review, at either the state or national level, some deaths may not be counted as COVID-19 deaths. This is rare, and the expectation is in the end, the numbers will closely align.

  • The deaths due to COVID-19 are provisional counts and often track several weeks behind other data. The number reported indicates the number of deaths from records that have been analyzed as of the date indicated. However, due to the one- to eight-week timeframe it can take to completely process death records, counts from previous weeks are continually revised as more records are received and processed.
