We are no longer a nation that is a political 50-50 split; it is now 60-40 to 58-42 split: advantage Democrats

Common wisdom used to be this was a 50 /50 split in the American voters' opinion polls:..half for the GOP and half for Democrats.  That has shifted to about  58 percent to 60% for Democrats and 42 to 40 percent split in approval for the GOP. This is evident even in the 2025 data, study and it does not reflect the recent shift in Hispanic, independent, and young people's votes away from the GOP and MAGA. Today's polls may reflect the shift.  https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2026/03/19/donald-trump-approval-rating/89177997007/

https://yougov.com/en-us/articles/54341-worsening-economic-outlook-donald-trump-iran-voting-march-13-16-2026-economist-yougov-poll

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZTtTtR21YM   recent ABC/Washington Post poll

This is a macro view, but it does not apply to every voting district..

As the GOP loses ground. how much does the loyalty to the MAGA viewpoint play in the GOP. I would have thought it would have been higher than 50%, but that was the finding in a study. https://news.vanderbilt.edu/2025/02/24/majority-of-republicans-nationally-identify-as-maga-for-first-time-in-unity-poll.   The allegiance to MAGA is growing.  Nonetheless, the swing vote within the GOP is still large enough to make any rift significant.,  That does not mean it automatically translates into political power loss.

Support for one or the other side of this voter poll split is also specific to location and the number of Congressional districts, states, or electoral college votes, voting districts that have a record, demographic, and dominance of one side of the divide or another. What it does show is that whatever is considered a swing or near swing district will still determine outcome in both November 2026 midterms and in the 2028 presidential race..  The rest of the voting districts are set in concrete. The electoral college laws are also responsible for this imbalance, which has resulted in nearly every presidential election showing a larger popular vote for Democrats than the winning GOP candidate. The advantage favors the GOP, and Democrats must outperform them with the popular vote. Not every voter who contributed to the 60% non Trump vote wlll vote for Democrats. They could opt to stay at home on election day.

Three factors may influence the remainder of the year. GOP/Trump policies that threaten previous Hispanic voters with ICE cruelty, the struggles of young people saddled with student debt, and AI as an entry-level job opportunity killer. The other is voter suppression of perceived opponent groups:, ICE agents at polling places, and making it difficult for those who are large numbers unfriendly to the GOP, particularly women, such as the SAVE act attempts to do.  Disillusionment by independents and non-MAGA with Trump's promises and failures to make good on them is a third.  This one may be growing thanks to his damage to affordability and entanglement in foreign wars, such as Iran.

The SAVE Act is now being debated in the Senate and is predicted to go down in defeat, even if Trump vetoes the version that survives and needs a 60-vote count to override his veto. Senators, even in some safe states, are not sure who will be hurt more: women or their own, poorer, undereducated rural  White voter base.

The current version of the SAVE proposal makes it hard for those they see as their opponents to vote, but it has a serious backfire in it that makes even GOP Senators uneasy unless they come from ruby red states. The SAVE Act places a burden on women that most men do not have. It requires many women to jump through additional hoops in order to be able to vote. Married or divorced women have to tie their accepted picture ID to their birth certificate to make name changes via marriage or other situations. This will certainly hurt Democrats, but that also will hurt the MAGA base, which is mostly rural, poor, White,  working class, and with low education levels, because they too have to cough up money to get the right photo ID and the accepted documentation of their birth and make it through those administrative hurdles. Elderly in both parties will be hurt, but less in blue higher-income states because they are more likely to have a US passport, which is accepted proof of citizenship/and name conformity. Elderly voters usually trend heavily toward the GOP.  Because of the cost involved in getting a certified birth certificate, passports, or a conforming ID, this can be seen as an unconstitutional poll tax, but that will have to play out in the courts.

Why pick on the women voters anyway?

Today, a 56% majority of women identify as Democrats or lean Democratic, while 37% affiliate with or lean toward the GOP. up 4 percentage points since 2015 and is at one of its highest points since 1992. Among men, there has been less recent change: 48% of men identify with the GOP, and 44% are Democrats or lean Democratic, a long-standing divide. Both gender and educational gaps are expanding.  https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2018/03/20/wide-gender-gap-growing-educational-divide-in-voters-party-identification/

What impact will NO KINGS have on Democrat's prospects in the future?

An interesting discussion on MSNBC last night in the glow of 5 million turnout at No King's events nationwide. What now, and what good will it do from now on? My phrase: Was this preaching to the choir, and was it just the choir who turned out? Those who thought it would be helpful in 2026 believed it would encourage Democrats who did not vote for Harris to get off the couch. There is evidence of a drop-off in Democratic turnout from 2020.

My own thoughts: It was more than just getting more off the couch to actively support Democrats. It raised awareness of the democracy/autocracy issue; provided a training ground for new leaders, reached a needed demographic group, illustrated the advantage of peaceful resistance over violent political action, and may help inspire greater Hispanic support.

Details:
What No Kings did do is raise the fear of the loss of democracy as a critical issue, and it has been a teaching, learning, and inspirational moment, which is of great value.

-Training and inspiring a cadre of new young activist leadership for the future may be the greatest legacy of that day. The organization and techniques were top drawer
.
-The other, the demographics were overwhelmingly white and young enough to march for blocks...the demographic that is the weakest for Democrats. That is good.
we
-NO KINGS was a lesson to all of us that peaceful demonstrations could be organized and controlled if the preparation and training were successful, as the coalition of so many diverse groups joining together did to pull this off.. The positive press of the peaceful turnout overshadowed the negatives of the troublemakers, who were a minority. That may give fence-sitters and couch loungers a feeling of comfort in supporting the movement's aims of supporting democracy and opposing dictatorship/strong man lovers in the MAGA base.

The movement of a peaceful resistance in 2025 owes much to Gandhi in India, but civil disobedience was a feature of his methods. Martin Luther King adapted Gandhi's technique. Indivisible and 50501 honed it and appealed to mostly white crowds, but civil disobedience was replaced with obedience of local laws...staying on sidewalks, not blocking traffic, coordinating with local police for permits. Using social media and modern communications, accumulated lists of participants (I had registered with the local sponsoring group in advance) were a key to NO KING's success. The modern twists employed by these new political movement organizers, who tapped into a wide variety of existing organizations in a coalition, as well as an online system for individual participation and message notification, were impressive. The success depended on the masses of participants waving homemade signs. It succeeded.

It is also important to buck up opposition in ruby red towns and states: Not only does it give a backbone to local resisters to know they are not alone, but it also gives those who listen only to Trump supportive media to hear another side and to see the messages on the cardboard posters. It also sends a message that the Trumpster majority in that locale cannot bully to quiet and submission by their tactics of shaming and supression. In ruby red Douglas County , a southern suburb of Denver, local officials tried to snuff out an expected NO KINGs demonstrations by requesting they postpone it because they had another event scheduled. The result was a doubling of estimation of the turnout on June 14. Thousands march in "No Kings" rally in Douglas County

The removal of the civil disobedience element as a technique used by MLK and Gandhi made it possible and safer for those less brave, including children, the elderly, mothers, fathers, and grandparents, to participate. It was multi-generational and at times, joyful. It gave an outlet for many who wanted to express their resistance to Trump but were not violent or confrontational. The use of NO KINGS was the least partisan and anger-rousing substitute name for Trump possible. It was a group civics lesson as it inspired a deeper appreciation of the benefits of democracy. It was a history lesson, too, that highlighted the reason our form of democracy came about in the first place 250 years ago. It was the spirit of 1776 and the beginning of resistance against a tyrant, too. The children and young people who participated will probably never forget June 14.
June 14 NO KINGS and the numbers and kind who participated put a lie to Trump and his minions, who in advance tried to paint it as a bunch of paid professional demonstrators.

-What was not reflected in the marches were minorities ...especially Hispanics, who were likely in hiding (exception LA first generation). That may help inspire more support from the Hispanic community. That this was mostly white does not reflect the strength of the Hispanc vote. The anti-DEI racist agenda of MAGA is an accelerant. We cannot take this for granted..and make sure that NO Kings also implies support of minority and civil rights, too. I am closely monitoring the polling of Hispanics to see if the losses Democrats have experienced in recent years have been reversed, and it would be a significant advantage in 2026. The assumption that Hispanics would be for Democrats because of Trump's anti immigration stance was wrong. Many Hispanics also feared or looked down on the recent immigrants, and they too saw the economy as a problem that Trump promised to fix.. However, Trump's cruelty may change some minds there.

In the long run, which way the economy goes will still be a significant factor in where the swing and Hispanc vote goes. Trump is doing his best to increase the cost of living, but TACO Trump is showing flexibility daily on his policies.

Kamala Harris takes the offiense on immigration. There is more she needs to do.Updated 9/4/24

Update 9/4/24: (Also reproduced as a separate posting)  Fear and loathing of all immigrants is key to Trump's campaign. However, it is based on factual BS.  The facts on the immigrant crime wave? There is not one. Trump sabotaged the only bipartisan bill to address it this past winter. Biden used what executive powers he had and the result was the lowest illegal crossing in 3 years. Catch and release is down 65%. We would have been on our way to even lower figures without Trump's wrecking the bill..  The executive orders Biden utilized face court challenges, but for now it has been effective and is still in effect. In addition, Mexico has cracked down on migrants, too.  Trump's campaign of fear and hatred of immigrants causing crime is debunked by statistics, ignored by  Trump's MAGA.

Immigrants, as a whole, are less likely to commit violent crimes. https://www.npr.org/2024/03/08/1237103158/immigrants-are-less-likely-to-commit-crimes-than-us-born-americans-studies-find

Illegal immigrants are not more likely to commit violent crimes: in fact, the opposite is true: https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/debunking-myth-migrant-crime-wave

Will Biden's executive order survive a legal challenge? "Biden's proclamation leans on Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act that lets a president limit entry of specific migrants if it is "detrimental" to national interest. Trump used the same provisions with his 2017 banning of people from Muslim-majority countries and a later policy barring asylum seekers that was ultimately struck down by courts. Biden administration officials insist the new proposal is very different, but that will likely do little to prevent expected lawsuits to stop it. The American Civil Liberties Union vowed to challenge the order in court. "It was illegal when Trump did it, and it is no less illegal now," said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the organization's Immigrants’ Rights Project. "   https://www.texastribune.org/2024/06/04/texas-mexico-border-biden-immigration-asylum-poliBiden's exec order faces legal challengescy/

A humane approach to immigration policy is the bi-partisan bill Trump killed because he wanted the issue to still be hot as he campaigns. There is also a possibility to contrast policies that may have a broader appeal to those who indeed want the border crisis to be handled, but not with the cruelty of Trump's plan.  What the bi-partisan bill lacks is Trump's plan to use the US Army to break up families with mixed status (an estimated 6.7 million families) and deport 20K total without documents, putting them in concentration camps waiting for deportation.

Harris  needed to revive flagging Hispanic support of Democrats (Trump 46%; Biden was 40%) that was a reverse of past statistics and the left flank of Democrats uneasy with even the bi-partisan bill Trump killed. The first step is to attack Trump for killing the bi-partisan bill. which Harris just did. With illegal border crossings now equal to Trump's data as he left office, the Democrats have highlighted that update.  Harris has gained significant approval by Hispanics, but there is still more to do. https://www.semafor.com/article/09/03/2024/kamala-harris-poll-hispanic-voters-climate-healthcare The next could be to paint the Trump approach based on racism, hate, cruelty, and fear, while the bipartisan bill approach is both humane and effective. With many in the Latino community also resenting the flood of migrants at the border, the humane plan of Harris might have some appeal. Harris is following the old bit of wisdom: the best defense is a great offense. However, she still needs to reverse the loss of Hispanic voters...https://thehill.com/homenews/4801766-kamala-harris-donald-trump-border

Update 8/9/2024 (The amount of misinformation coming from Trump and his MAGA camp about immigration is in such volume, it is difficult to keep up. There was a comprehensive whistle blowing on a recent Trump ad hyping fear and hatred of immigrants that is worthy of keeping it pinned for future reference.  It was from my favorite fact checker FactCheck.org, non-partisan, non-profit.   https://www.factcheck.org/2024/08/trump-tv-ad-repeats-false-border-czar-illegal-immigration-claims/

(On Venezuelan elections, drama still unfolding, there is an example of how difficult it is to unseat an autocrat. Maduro has just provided a how to overturn an election course.  Elements of his attempts are can be attempted here, particularly with the MAGA emphasis in controlling the count at the very local election office, usually the County Clerk level...or in a county election board. Maduro is stealing Venezuela's election and the U.S. seems powerless to do anything about it (msnbc.com), It is happening in the US as well.  the recent Georgia GOP legislature just gave the County Clerk the power to make decisions about what they would certify contrary to their own state constitution which says they shall just forward results to the state.  Who controls the count at the local level in Colorado is central to the federal prosecution of a county clerk Tima Peters who gave an unauthorized partisan activist codes to the voting machine tabulators. Here case is going to trial this month.)

From an earlier Muftic Forum blog post: "46% of Latinos support Trump and 40% Biden via a recent NY Times poll. Perhaps those figures also include immigrants from Cuba and Venezuela who seem eager to substitute a Trump dictatorship for the ones they had fled. Latinos of all kinds make up 15% of the US vote. All migrants, documented or not, will be impacted. Every traffic stop or encounter or a nosy neighbor "turning them in" will cause anyone who looks "Mexican" to be "showing their papers" if they are documented. If they are not, they will be sent first to concentration camps and then deported. 16.7 million families have both documented and undocumented members in them, and all would be at risk if Trump/Vance won."

Trump is all about cruelty. Trump's putting undocumented residents in concentration camps as part of his draconian plan to deport 20 thousand from the US, wrecking many families with mixed documented/undocumented members with its cruelty. He tried to paint Kamala Harris as a failed immigration czar, but Harris quickly struck back from a rally platform on 7/30/24 in Atlanta and followed it up with an attack ad...turning the issue back on Trump for killing the bill...and "talk not walking the talk", not caring about immigration, but only himself.

Hispanic vote: GOP cruelty is their point; 16.7 million families could be ripped apart updated 9/1//2024

I don't get it: 46% of Latinos support Trump and 40% Biden via a recent NY Times poll. (Update: 7/31/2024:  A humane approach to immigration policy is the bi-partisan bill Trump killed because he wanted the issue to still be hot as he campaigns. What was in the bill Trump tanked:

“The bill provides funding to build the wall, increase technology at the border, and add more detention beds, more agents, and more deportation flights. The border security bill ends the abuse of parole on our southwest border that has waived in over a million people.Feb 4, 2024" https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/new-immigration-asylum-reform-bill-released-senate-text-rcna136602
In response, Pres. Biden issued an executive order that at least stopped the surge. This, of course, was not enough to do the whole job. but it does point to the need for Congress to act because executive orders are not enough.

Updated and edited:.7/19/2024 follows:

Trump's RNC Convention nomination acceptance speech was vintage Trump,  delivering the drumbeat of fear-mongering, deception, and lies. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/fact-checking-donald-trumps-rnc-speech-immigration-economy/story?id=112091019 The MAGA's vulnerability and fear have been given a dose of fear and a case of amnesia about how Trump's "crisis" was extended an extra year when he ordered the bi-partisan immigration bill crafted by the Senate killed in the House in February 2024.  Some crisis, Trump. I guess it was not so much it had to be fixed immediately.  The crisis was that the bi-partisan bill would have hurt the effectiveness of his main campaign plank: be very afraid of the invasion of brown people at the border and "only I can fix it"..That Biden could fix it was the crisis Trump faced.

Following media coverage of the RNC Convention, the greatest roar from the crowd was when speakers advocated mass deportation of as many as 20 million of undocumented migrants (called "illegals" by MAGA) , depriving them of human and civil rights, separating families, yanking them out of their homes and from their families, and hyping fears with lies that have failed fact checker reviews..  There is no more evidence of the racist and hatred-driven nature of the members of the GOP who cheered and heartily waved signs promoting mass deportations and ignoring the blatant lies of the rousing speakers. Any solution like the bi-partisan bill Trump shot down this year is not acceptable without the election of concentration camps holding mass deportees.. According to the Census Bureau, Hispanics comprise over 19% of the US population. That is over 65 million. .  Dreamers had no choice as babies carried by undocumented immigrants.

Trump's policies were not effective. Aside from Trump's cruelty and walls when he was in office, apprehensions at the southwest border were 14.7% higher in Trump’s final year in office, an (indication of how many attempts at illegal crossings,  compared with the last full year before he was sworn in.)  https://www.factcheck.org/2024/04/trumps-misleading-chart-on-illegal-immigration/ He ignores the impact of the pandemic and, in fact, uses it to take credit for doing such a good job.  The deception is where he placed the arrows and took credit for what the pandemic caused.

Funding border patrol and providing more court judges so they could screen border crossers for non-criminality and fit what the law provided for refugees seeking asylum., Economic opportunity, poverty bad governance are not qualifications for granting asylum, but it takes screening to separate the qualified from the others..Continuing to build more of the wall was also part of the bi-partisan, historically conservative Senate bill to immediately relieve the crossings surge.  However, Trump, the demagogue, told the House members to kill it because he needed the surge to continue as the fear factor appealing to his base.  Biden then took some actions using executive orders, and the attempted crossings are now cut in half, and in effect, closed the border to a surge that could not be handled by existing resources.

Fear and lies again are Trump's tools to hype fear and ride that to victory...  Fentanyl is carried mostly in trucks, not by migrants themselves, and there are very effective machines to detect that, but it also needs funding.   That gets ignored by the base of Trump's supporters.  Their goal, expressed on the poster waivers at the RNC convention, was "mass deportations," and anything less just was not cruel enough. Turning back illegal crossings is only part of the GOP's plan. The rest is to kick out those living in the USA, 20 million of them, who have been law-abiding and quietly good neighbors who are beloved and are already part of the fabric of US society but are "others" claiming Democrats want them here for their illegal votes. (Another big lie with no evidence or facts showing that is happening).

Alarms bells are ringing as Biden's approval declines among Hispanics/Latinos

This posting is an excerpt from  an earlier posting.  MUFTIC FORUM BLOG: What Trump plans for his second term and how he will do it

Alarm bells are ringing as Biden's support among Hispanics is eroding .  Biden's surprising vulnerability: non-white working-class voters (axios.com)(my own comment: Univision's new owner is aiming to turn Hispanics into Trumpsters on the basis that the ills they are escaping are socialism. The real evil is a dictatorship, socialist or communist or fascist, and the message to Hispanics is that they are trading one dictatorship for another one. (This mindset, fear of "socialism" as in Venezuela and Cuba, played a major motivation for Miami turning red and in Florida as a whole:  Listen up, Hispanics: Trump considers their kind who are here "illegally" as "vermin" who are adulterating "our blood". What sort of fools are Hispanics to swallow this?.) Univision Anchor Leon Krauze Exits After Network's Trump Interview (variety.com)  However, Biden's loss is now reaching past those recent immigrants from Cuba and Venezuela, Nicaragua,  per the Axios article, but not as much outside of Florida. GOP rides Latino support in Florida as Miami-Dade turns red | AP News.

Related  NYT article section head: "He intends to carry out an extreme immigration crackdown"  with sweeping raids, using military funds to camps to hold undocumented detainees (including those already here for decades), declaring public-health emergency law to shut down the border, ending birthright citizenship.     (My comment: Nearly every family I know with documented and legal members also has those Trump would consider illegal and subject to being sent to his detention camps, including Dreamers)

From the NYT section heading: "Trump has plans to use US military force closer to home", including using federal troops to crack down on protests and to intercept and detain undocumented migrants, using the insurrection act to get around possie comitatus laws forbidding using the active military to enforce domestic laws.  (My comment: General Mark Miley refused to use active troops either for January 6 or against civil unrest, but Trump has already said he should be executed for his treason ...committed against Trump: Mark Milley says Trump disrespected US military with execution comment | CNN Politics )

NYT section head: " Trump and his allies want greater control over the federal bureaucracy and work force"...which to alter civil service rules and "enabling him to fire thousands of federal workers and replace them with loyalists" and a related NYT section head: "Trump allies want lawyers who will not restrain him:" including replacing Federalist Society lawyers.

What Trump plans for his second term and how he will do it

This is not the prattling of a madman, but it is what he plans to do and the plank he will run on, with stealth or right out in the open for all to see.  He learned much from his first term and is determined not to repeat it.  His plans are straight out: to end democracy as we have known it and to become a dictator within four years.   This is not a fantasy; he could pull it off. Poll: Biden’s standing hits new lows amid Israel-Hamas war (nbcnews.com).Trump: 46%; Biden 44%. Believe him; he has been upfront on it, and it is being used as a sales pitch to recruit his campaign workers now.  The groundwork is already being laid by the misnamed Heritage Foundation, and money is being raised. Donations have surged to groups linked to conservative Project 2025 (nbcnews.com)  The related groups have issue agendas that would roll back any legislation that hurt their special interest groups or ideology.  Project 2025's issues agenda: Analysis Exposes Trumpian Project 2025 as 'Far-Right Playbook for American Authoritarianism' (commondreams.org)  in which it finds their agenda is to elevate Christian nationalism, gut civil service, reverse progress on racial, eviscerate LGBTQ+ rights, restrict reproductive freedom, roll back climate action, end "woke" military, overhaul public education, and curb human rights?  These are the money backers that would come into power as Trump, on his part, replaces those who are disloyal with his appointments, including replacing 50 thousand civil servants who do not pass the loyalty to Trump and MAGA and get purged and using the FBI and DOJ to go indict opponents, and continue to use fear of retribution to any in the federal government who would oppose him, while using the military to put down public demonstrations who object.  The damage to our foreign policy and the fear a Trump repeat would do to national security and the security of our allies is also major. Alarm bells are ringing worldwide..Donald Trump poses the biggest danger to the world in 2024 (economist.com).    Donny Deutsch, 11/20/23 on Morning Joe, the advertising guru, rang a bell with me when he said "to go for the gut" in Biden's campaign. "Trump is dangerous; Biden is safe". This depends on Biden and backers educating voters about why Trump is dangerous and convincing them, as well.  So far, not enough voters have gotten that message and will not, until Biden and his supporters start drawing that contrast as a major theme.

The Heritage Foundation wants to bring to the end the heritage of our kind of democracy.  It is the diametric opposite of the Federalist Society, which was basically state rightist. Trump's plan is to make the executive branch the governing tool over all the other branches, judiciary and legislative..  His first order of business is to get revenge against those who had and are opposing him.  It has nothing to do with issues or improving citizens' lives. Justice for him means getting revenge against his opponents of the past.  However, those organizations backing his proposals also have an issues agenda that is just plain scary.

From the New York Times article section headings: https://www.nytimes.com/article/trump-2025-second- If you can get the article, each paragraph contains links to Trump's own words made in public and how he tried before to do something similar.  If you get hit with the paywall, here is a summary, with some comments by me in italics.:

"Trump wants to use the Justice Department to take vengeance on his political adversaries."..  In an interview with Univision he declared" he could, if someone challenged him politically, have that person indicted,"   ‘That’s insane’: CNN panel on what Trump said he would do if re-elected (msn.com)

Are Florida’s Hispanic voters moving more to the right? – WFTV

A personal note: Why am I so interested in the Hispanic community.  My father's grandmother was from Spain, and as a child in eastern Colorado (Brush, Ft. Morgan, Hillrose), his family was bilingual. When I moved to Colorado in 1963, I made it my mission to help Hispanics get a leg up politically and economically in the community, and I began volunteering. My physician husband's closest associate was a Hispanic GP from southern Colorado practicing in Denver. His OB-GYN  practice was bilingual, as well. He was from southeastern Europe and a culture similar to his patients. Every governmental agency I headed or provided community relations services non-profit and private, offered bilingual services, and involved local Hispanics on staff.  I was cabinet and staff for nearly 8 years in the Federico Pena administration when he was Denver's mayor. My largest client as a PR consultant for almost 15 years was auto dealer Mike Shaw, who hailed from the Rio Grande Valley with deep Hispanic roots in Texas. He is a philanthropist at heart, focusing on helping Hispanic youth, among many other disadvantaged, get an education.  A few years ago, he was named National Dealer of the Year by his trade association (NADA) and was the first minority owner of dealerships to be so honored.  We did not share the same political party affiliation, but we shared his philanthropist goals.

Cuban and Venezuelan voters in Florida: do not confuse them with other Hispanics

 https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/cuban-american-voters-florida-trump-desantis-suarez-2024-president-rcna94253

Edited and updated: 7/15/23

The influence of the non-Cuban/Venezuelan outside of Florida should be considered separately from  other parts of the US.  Trump's racist attacks on Hispanic migrants and the growing demographics of young Latinos elsewhere played a role in putting Arizona in the blue-purple column recently, as well as Trump's nasty attacks on the memory of Arizona's hero, the late Sen. John McCain.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/how-suburbanites-latinos-and-the-ghost-of-john-mccain-turned-arizona-into-a-presidential-battleground/ar-AA1jcHYS?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=DCTS&cvid=0ebe0487102d4ec290e853e5d0eaf556&ei=7

The media sometimes just does not get it. They are confusing Cuban and Venezuelan voters with a larger body of many other Hispanics.   They are constantly pointing to "the Hispanic vote" that one or the other candidate for a federal position-national election or the current officeholder is supported more or less in the polls of this monolith of an ethnic block. They give verbal lip service to repeating to themselves this block is not monolithic but treat it as a monolith in the next sentence or paragraph.   They then express shock or breaking news when some Hispanics do not fit their pre-conceived notion of a monolith and leave it at that.  It is time that pundits begin to look at segments of the Hispanic vote and report that to their audiences.

Miami turned red recently and Florida moved into the deep red column after being purple and led by a governor who tried to position himself to the right of MAGA, Every time polls showing a political shift happens, the story becomes: Democrats are losing the Hispanic vote while polls of the monolithic view show the shift has been localized and intensified.  The polls of the body of Hispanics as a whole show little change but reveal some softening of support of Democrats, giving that party some angst. Poll: Hispanics aren’t flocking to the GOP, but Democrats still have problems (nbcnews.com)

Democrats rarely ever had more than 60% of the identified Hispanic vote as a monolith in any presidential election, but since 1984, with one exceptional year,  the "monolith" has voted for Democrats 57% of the time, including now.  The question posed for Democrats in the NBC article immediately above is how to stop any perceived hemorrhaging? The first step in reporting the real story is understanding why certain Hispanics zag one way and others in other parts of the country zag another and why.  Man-on-the-street interviews, as this above story illustrates, are fine, but putting this in a context of why and what, and how to fix it takes a more meaningful journalistic approach.

Culture, heritage, and life experiences explain much. Why did Miami turn so deeply red recently? Here is my theory.  Cuban and Venezuelans were already heavily GOP voters and those sitting on the fence got an added impetus to vote red from DeSantis' cultural wars against gays and a nearly total abortion ban. Religious and cultural beliefs were added to a long-standing affinity with GOP hard-line anti-Cuba policies and gratitude for their ability to seek refuge in the US after Communists took over both Cuba and later Venezuela.   Their views are shaped by communist repressive governments which persecuted the middle and upper classes and forced them to flee to the US.  Their life experiences and culture differ in many ways from Hispanic immigrants with roots in Mexico and Central America who were fleeing violent drug cartels and poverty. Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants, by and large, were once the wealthier elite of their countries and have more in common with Trump, who also considers himself the wealthy elite.  Some even look down on those racially mixed and the poor, including the recent poorer and younger wave of Venezuelans at our borders.. Trump's disdain for "others" confirms that he shares some of those same values. Therefore it is a mistake to assume that even earlier arrivals should support the more recent ones just because they share religion and language.

It is more than just which presidential candidate takes the hardest line against Cuba.  The affinity with MAGA runs deeper than that. How should politicians approach this voting block of Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants? Should they even try?    Empathize first and briefly acknowledge how they get the differences. Be respectful, but at least make the effort to make a case for their different views..Changing deep-seated ideas will be a slow process, and until then, the rest of us should not be surprised\ that the Cuban and Venezuelan Floridians support Trump and the right-leaning Desantis  Sadly, for now, it is what it is for the older generations, but the more assimilated younger generations may have open minds addresses issues affecting Florida Cubans and Venezuelans other than foreign policy toward Cuba or Venezuela.  In other parts of the country, the issues and attitudes, and experiences will differ, so remember, all politics are local, but Hispanic views may be local, too.

There are other issues raised by the Cuban and Venezuelan immigrant communities besides hardline foreign policies toward Cuba and Venezuela and DeSantis' cultural wars. They have some views of the meaning of democracy, justice, freedom, and immigration that are similar to the MAGA supporters.

Democracy  v Autocracy. The question that bugs me is how can those who fled dictatorships not be bothered by charges made that Trump is a wannabe dictator? Are they just trading one dictatorship for another?  If so, can Democrats convince them to vote bluer?

Connected to this is the concept of justice which is similar to MAGA views..  Indictments of Donald Trump only endear Trump to Florida Cubans and Venezuelan immigrants because the dictatorial and autocratic rules of Castro,  Chavez, and  Maduro abused the rule of law and the justice system to force the upper and middle class to flee.  The irony is that Donald Trump has often expressed admiration for dictatorial, non-democratic leaders, from Putin to the heads of N Korea and Hungary, yet the refugees from autocratic countries such as Cuba and Venezuela fail to understand or see that Trump has the same instincts as such autocrats, dictators, and tyrants from whom they fled.  Post-President Trump expressed a desire to take revenge/retribution and to use fear of enlisting the government to persecute his enemies if he got a second term.  An explanation for this blind spot and unconcern that Trump is a wannabe autocrat is a mindset that autocrats are OK with these Cuban and Venezuelan refugees if they are "their" autocrats who support their elite class or interests, or lifestyle.  It is an attitude similar to that held by the core Trump American-born followers, as well.

"New Deal and War on Poverty expansionism is communism and therefore Democrats are communists" is a concept frequently expressed by the Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants. The MAGA views are similar to the anti-social programs held by non-MAGAs, too, but not expressed in such extreme terms as communist.  Life experience could explain why Cubans and Venezuelans in Miami claim everyone left of center is a communist when they advocate social security, health care, and poverty programs because that is how the governments they fled rose to power by advocating and promising social programs for the poor.   There are no shades of gray in their concept.  Government social programs are communist. Expansion of them will lead to communism. Period.  In time, they may realize that there is a difference between the New Deal social programs and War on Poverty initiatives based on the need for the least of these and the kind of class warfare/ persecution by authoritarian/dictatorial governments of Cuba and Venezuela.

Those who immigrated to Florida from Cuba also have a view of  "freedom" that is shared by the Trumpist crowd.  Freedom for them appears to mean the freedom to live their past lifestyles, but it did not mean fighting for the same freedom for others.  It was a very self-centered view:. It was freedom for them to do their thing, but by implication and inference or even lack of realization, it did not mean they ought to support or advocate the same freedom for those of different socio, racial, sexual orientation,or country of origin backgrounds.  This may explain why  Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants are not bothered by the anti-immigrant rhetoric and harsh border policies of the Trump administration. Remember those Cubans who set foot on our beaches fleeing Castro were immediately granted refugee status and citizenship.

Personal notes:  So why am I sensitive to this failure to take into account the reasons for the angst or incomplete coverage of the Hispanic vote story?

Full disclosure: I had a great-grandmother from Tuero, Spain, who married a first-generation immigrant from France and settled in the eastern Colorado plains in the 1880s. My father grew up in a bilingual Spanish-speaking middle-class family of business owners in Hillrose, Colorado. My admiration for Hispanic culture runs deep, and I was proud to serve nearly 8 years in the Federico Peña administration when he was the Mayor of Denver before he served as US Secretary of Energy and Transportation. Peña is a native of Laredo, Texas. After that, I was a consultant to a local  Hispanic businessman, Mike Shaw, also with Texas roots, helping with his philanthropic projects in the  Hispanic and minority communities. His efforts were recognized nationally. mike shaw first minority dealer to be named Time auto dealer of year - Search (bing.com)

My views, too, are shaped by unusual life experiences. Members of our family and I have spent time in Florida and Miami, some living there for several years, others frequent visitors.  The contrast between the Floridian Hispanics and those  Hispanics in my own community was stark. It seemed even the only things they had in common were the Spanish language and the Catholic religion. We lived for over forty years in a heavily Hispanic Denver reflecting the first Hispanic arrivals from the poverty-struck San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado with inhabitants who can trace their ancestors to the Conquistadors. In more recent times, Denver is dominated by those immigrating from south of the border.  There have been cultural clashes as the south of the border groups became dominant. Both groups share more in common with themselves than with the first waves of Cubans in Florida or the more recent  Venezuelan arrivals in Miami.

I was married most of my adult life to a refugee from the communism of Eastern Europe, so the plight of refugees is more than just a political or abstract interest. I know firsthand of the differences between communism and the New Deal/War on Poverty programs. One did not lead to another. In any case, the concept of freedom and human and civil rights are colored by their experiences that motivated emigration.  My late husband, for example, was very relieved to be able to say and speak out what he wanted without fear of a knock on the door by police in the middle of the night. However, he was puzzled when not everyone appreciated his opinion (He was a Democratic national committeeman for three terms). I had to explain to him that freedom of speech did not mean everyone had to agree with him but that he did have a right to express it, even if it was not wise politics.

What both my husband and I and other family members did observe over the years as those who immigrated to Florida from Cuba had an entirely different view of freedom. Freedom for them meant the freedom to live their past lifestyles, but it did not mean fighting for the same freedom for others.  It was a very self-centered view:. It was freedom for them to do their thing, but by implication and inference or even lack of realization, it did not mean they ought to support or advocate the same freedom for those of different socio, racial, or country of origin backgrounds.  This, I think, may explain why the GOP and Trump have such appeal to those who advocate freedom for their followers but not the same freedom or equity for everyone.  The corollary to that is to approve or tolerate discrimination against those perceived as potential or actual enemies.

The fat lady has not yet sung. The FBI just lobbed an IED into the campaign, a true October surprise. This is tasty fodder for the GOP opposition anxious to jump to their conclusions.. The House email investigation is now reopened eleven days before the election, with the FBI reporting they found more emails that need to be investigated. Whether these new emails provide proof Clinton intentionally sent classified material and lied about, unlike the previous findings, is not known since the investigation has just started. If it is like the FBI’s previous meticulous investigation, we will not know until well after the election. Until then, expect GOP political operatives to act as jury, judge, and hangman.  Donald Trump’s rally audiences will raise their chant of ‘lock her up’ with even greater lynch mob fervor now. In the meantime, FBI director Comey indicated in his announcement “the FBI does not yet know if the new material in question is "significant."  The results could be or could not be the same as with the  earlier investigated emails.

Whether this will influence voters who have not voted already or have made up their minds because of other issues, is yet to be seen.  Both candidates have legal clouds hanging over them, now, though Clinton’s cloud is more threatening because the accusations could concern a crime. Donald Trump’s suit against him that he committed civil fraud regarding Trump University goes to trial after the election.

What is also yet unknown is voter turnout.  Both major party campaigns believe that unless their supporters actually vote instead of just answering polls, they could lose. According to Bloomberg News, insiders in the Trump campaign are trying to “suppress” the Clinton vote by last minute reminders of her negatives so that voters just leave that line on the ballot blank. This FBI action can help the voter suppression effort. The Clinton camp is also concerned that the media reports that she has the race already won, some will not make the effort to get their ballots in. Many a race has been lost or won by a vote or two in each precinct. Colorado is still considered a swing state.  The only poll that counts on election-day is the actual vote.

Pollsters tell us the most important factor that determines voter choice is “does he/she care about me “.Polls show more women have seen enough of Trump’s behavior to answer that with a  “no”.  For many women Trump is a reminder of their worst nightmare, of past unpleasant experiences with men of his personality traits...an intimidating bully and/or a groper who judges women as objects to be scored one to ten.

Only 4% of African Americans polled also supported Donald Trump. Many expressed they were insulted by Trump’s negative broad brush painting of their lives. A majority of Hispanics believe Trump is even hostile to themselves and their concerns. In Colorado Hispanics make up 14.5% of eligible voters, enough to swing the outcome if they turn out to vote.

The FBI's reopened investigation will probably eclipse stories concerning Wikileaks and Obamacare .. Wikileaks’ release of hacked emails  so far  only reinforced existing negative opinions about Clinton.  The Obamacare premium hikes had become a hot topic deceptively spun.Trump supporters made it sound like everyone’s premiums were going up 20%. Wrong.  Only a small percentage of consumers will be affected. Get your insurance from your employer, a subsidy (tax credit; premium assistance) from Connect for Health Colorado exchange with over 85,000 customers, Medicare, or Medicaid, or military related providers?  Obamacare premium increases will not cause your rates to increase. Those impacted with be those who make too much money to qualify for subsidies and who buy insurance through Connect for Health Colorado or other state exchanges.  Congress than fix that problem if they want.

After Iowa, the rest of the race to the White House is about demographics

Hillary Clinton became the first Clinton not to lose an Iowa caucus night and the first woman to “apparently” win it.  Whether it is a definite win and not a tie depends on the expectations of pundits and candidate supporters. By sheer numbers of delegate counts, a win is a win.
No doubt, Bernie Sanders exceeded expectations, but after New Hampshire, he will need to show he can cut into both the African American and Hispanic Democratic caucus or primary voters to continue his momentum.

Depending upon who becomes the GOP winner in the primaries, the Hispanic vote in swing electoral college states will become critical in November.  It is not a given that Democrats will retain over 70% of that group as they did in 2012.  The more virulent anti-immigrant, anti “amnesty” the GOP nominee is, the more either Clinton or Sanders in the general election will succeed in attracting Hispanics.

Clinton will have one more demographic advantage in the primaries: the women of a “certain age” ,middle and older, who have been waiting a long time for the US to join the UK, Germany, and India, among other countries, who have been or are now led by women.

Why Clinton cannot depend on the  under 30 year old women’s vote is because so many of the younger women have not yet dealt with the remaining parts of the  glass ceiling and pay inequality in advancing their careers. The generation to which students and young women belong is much more liberal and many are taken by Sander’s crusade against income inequality between economic classes.

There is also an element of women of that certain older age who have always been supportive of a single payer health care system.  Given the certainty that the House of Representatives will remain in GOP hands, and the probability that the Senate will continue to have a GOP majority, Medicare for all in the next four years is a hope without a prayer.

In the general election, most of the young women’s vote is likely to stay with Democrats, regardless of the nominee, because of the extreme position of GOP candidates on the matter of choice and/or on other issues.  Per a poll taken  a year ago reported by  Politico,” Female voters who care about the top four issues — the economy,  healthcare, education and jobs — vote overwhelmingly for Democrats. Most striking, Democrats hold a 35-point advantage with female voters who care about jobs.”

The greatest threat to women’s interests is the possibility of GOP control of Supreme Court appointments. Electability is an issue women cannot dismiss and Sanders’ self- identified socialist label could turn off enough swing vote moderates needed to win the general.  Control of the White House is critical to women who see choice and /or health care as being important to them. Most Court decisions important to women have been 5 to 4 or 4 to 5 splits.  If the GOP wins the Presidency, his court appointees would tilt the Court more their way.  A party will be in total control of a Congress and White House that could repeal Obamacare and replace it with either nothing or a more fiscally unsound system, unaffordable by many more.

Bob Beauprez, who is he?

Who is Bob Beauprez, the Republican taking on Gov. John Hickenlooper in November?  He is a relatively unknown to the general public since his last elected office ended seven years ago, and his stance on issues is missing on his website. Polls show a close race. The campaign will heat up after Labor Day, but what positions Beauprez takes on issues may change the poll numbers.
What we know is that Beauprez was a two-term congressman until 2007, serving western slope District 7, and he lost to Democrat Bill Ritter in the general election for governor in 2006 by 17 percentage points.  Since then he has served as editor in chief of A Line of Sight, an online magazine.  He published one book, “A Return to Values: A Conservative.” There is a limited record of public statements he made in 2012 and later.  From that, it is possible to get a sneak preview of what may come.
He will be a good fit for rural Colorado, but not necessarily for urban/suburban voters. He will perpetuate a gender gap, may neutralize an increase in the Hispanic vote gap, and will risk attacks that “he is too extreme for Colorado” in spite of his businessman demeanor.
Beauprez already had a Romney 47% moment caught on YouTube, similar to what many consider the turning point resulting in the reelection of President Obama. Four years ago Beauprez noted 47% do not pay federal income tax.  Failing to note that 47% percent do not earn enough to be taxed, he concluded, “Almost one half of the population is perfectly happy that someone else is paying the bill.”   He defended his remarks again on July 2, 2014, on KWGN.
A recent Quinnipiac poll concluded that issues of importance to Colorado are the economy, jobs, and health care, to the exclusion of the rest.  A poll revealed 60% say Colorado’s economy is “excellent” or “good” while viewing the national economy as the reverse.  Gov. Hickenlooper, also viewed as business- and energy sector-friendly, may neutralize or win that issue.
Regarding Obamacare, what Beauprez would do differently is not known.  Would he yank it from those who are already benefiting or find an acceptable substitute that provides the same protection from insurance company practices of denial for preexisting conditions and benefits of affordability for the 400,000 in Colorado who were uninsured prior to the ACA?  Colorado’s exchange marketplace is ranked as one of the top four most successful in the US.
A nonpartisan, nonprofit  group “On the Issues,” however, has looked at Beauprez’s positions on record and assessed  him to be a conservative on the right, opposing higher taxes on the wealthy, green energy as a priority, women’s unrestricted rights for abortion, and same-sex marriage. What he favors are school choice vouchers, absolute right to gun ownership, and privatizing social security.  He is neutral on a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens, perhaps recognizing that Hispanics comprise 12% of the state’s voters.

GOP's proposal to oppose the President's request of 3.7 billion dollars and come up with their own is even more a shame and a sham.. The GOP  seems determined to continue adding to the perception they are anti Latino and begging political trouble. Now they are quibbling over the amount and  proposing   changing  or violating current laws by  advocating putting  refugees  on the next plane back home . . It would  deprive these children  of a process that sorts out who is worthy of asylum,  subjecting some to dangerous conditions at home again,   opening up once again the ability of human traffickers to get away without scrutiny by  destroying any  ability to determine who is a victim .Making any appropriations conditioned  solely on “first securing the borders” does not address the current crisis   where apprehension is not the problem since the crossers just turn themselves in to the border officials.

This is an update on the prior posting," Border Crisis is a shame."

A version of this appeared  in the www.skyhidailynews.com July 18, 2014.  The impact of GOP policy on their ability to win the Senate is dimming...in part because of the Hispanic vote in Colorado...as the recent NBC/Marist poll shows. http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/poll-democrats-hang-slight-leads-key-senate-races-n155531
