FYI Trump is not the friend you think he is if you are on a budget, a woman, a person of color,.....

As the campaigns lure "undecided" or targeted demographic groups, there are irrational honey lures that need a reality check. If you are smitten his glittering persona, he is not the friend you think he is. If you think he is good for the economy, especially consumers and ordinary Americans on a budget, he is not your friend. If you are a woman, he is especially not your friend. He will instead treat you as a "threat from within" if you do not show loyalty to him or object to his suppressive, harmful policies.

If you are taken by Trump's machismo,  weigh this. Trump has a lifetime of racism and racial discrimination, and what he is promising to do if elected is to benefit his core supporters and to suppress those who are not, especially if you are an immigrant or have ancestors of any color.    In his past is calling tiki torch neo nazis some fine people, housing discrimination, making it hard for minority groups to vote using various methods, a birtherism crusade against Obama and his ranting against the innocent Central Park Five, voter suppression including inconveniencing access to ballot drop off locations in certain zip codes, and putting up administrative barriers, or intimidating those voting in person..  If his supporters have their way, as their Project 2025  blueprint goes, all affirmative action and anti-discrimination rules will be ended administratively (not by law or Congressional action). If you raise a voice against discrimination, you will be faced with Trump's promised use of the Department of Justice to cause you or your group money and time at best by facing criminal prosecution as you defend your civil rights. A few such prosecutions can serve to frighten even those not in a leadership position. Participate in a demonstration to protest Trump's executive orders? Expect him to call in the active army to put it down. He is promising that. If you have immigrant members of your family who may not have documentation of legal status, expect them.to use the active army to hunt those without documents,  and place them in detention camps. 6.4 families are facing that vulnerability of having those in family both with legal status and not. If you choose to protest his policies, Trump will have your demonstrations ended by using active military to stop it. He has also whipped up into a froth with lies about the danger of all immigrants who are black or brown or are Muslim.  With friends like Trump, who needs enemies.

If you are a consumer on a budget, he has no plan to fight price gouging or fraud and he will cost your family money with his tariff scheme and raising prescription drug prices and harm your accesss to health care.  He himself has been convicted of fraud or forced to refund the money or his Trump University scheme to falsify business records to cheat banks and taxpayers, judged by jurors of his peers. His charitable foundations have been shut down because his family was using the money for personal benefit. He does have a plan to raise the cost of all imported goods across the board by imposing high tariffs on them to generate more money.  He also will continue the huge tax breaks to the rich and reverse forcing big pharma's prescription drug price costs. He has no plans to deal with high rent and price gouging by big corporations who control the housing markets. Obamacare is in jeopardy with his unspecified but suspected "concept," which would seriously harm those with pre-existing conditions with measures that have failed in the past. He refuses to be more specific because of the unpopularity of what he and his backers want. He spent his time trying to destroy Obamacare, not save it, FYI.  If you are a student, it is the mantra of MAGA to not give you any relief from student debt.

You are fooling yourselves into thinking that Trump had a great economy to which all will magicallyreturn and prices will go back upon his re-election. The great economy under Trump was an illusion. In the first two years, it was due to the handoff left by Obama's successful economy that he did not change. In the last two years of his term, thanks mainly to COVID, we have had the worst economic and job losses since the Great Depression, which was his handoff to Biden.  Biden has managed to stop inflation, provide record job figures, and wage increases to compensate for the inflation that followed in the recovery from COVID-19's devastating effect on the supply chain and pent-up demand. By most indicators, we are back to the growth and economic figures before COVID struck. Gas at the pump prices are only slightly above what they were before the Ukraine conflict caused shortages. Interest rates are on their way down since inflation is close to the goal of 2% per year.  We never had the post-COVID recession that was predicted.

If you are a woman, Trump says he will let the states decide after appointing "pro-life" Supreme Court justices who carried out his wish to overturn Roe v Wade.  He can keep his extreme right-wing happy without signing a federal abortion ban into law or depending on Congress to pass one. Discrimination against women will revert to the 1960s status. A government now controls the reproductive lives of a third of Americans. If Project 2025 is his blueprint, his appointees will be able to extend access to birth control or deny other rights women have fought for since the 1970s.  His appointees will be able to do that in all states regardless of their local wishes by administrative means and rules without going to Congress or having Trump sign anything into law. In addition, affirmative action will also not be enforced via Project 2025. Discrimination against women will revert to the 1960s status.

Seniors, once reliable Republicans, are becoming Democrats

This is a trend that was developing while Biden was still a candidate, but it has continued since the Harris candidacy.  This is an updated earlier version of several prior posts:

Will Project 2025 cut Medicare: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/fact-checking-warnings-from-democrats-about-project-2025-and-donald-trump   It proposes some cuts to Medicare but not to social security, and it would reverse prescription drug price cuts and stop negotiation to lower drug costs.

Updating three earlier posts: 9 4 2024

Kamala Harris Could Land Key Group of Voters, Polls Show (msn.com)   Per this recent Newsweek article 9/4/24,  the switch is continuing with Harris per an August 10 poll:" According to the most recent New York Times/Siena Poll on August 10, Harris is polling at 55 percent compared to Trump's 42 percent among voters age 65 and up. That advantage only slightly dips for Harris, 53-41, with third-party candidates included in the poll.

Sixty-seven percent of the 65-plus voters in the poll say they are "almost certain" to vote. In the last presidential election, roughly 52 percent of voters over 65 backed Trump."

Let me add one more reason seniors are switching to Biden. It is a generational change, per this piece in the New York Times. My silent generation has died off, with only 20 percent of us still living (the good news, bad news for me). Instead, it has been replaced by the All in the Family generation, disillusioned with the lies told us about Vietnam and the bigotry and xenophobia exposed in this classic TV sitcom.

My thoughts: The silent generation grew up with radio; the one now coming of old age had the visuals of TV with an impact much more visceral than movie newsreels, photos, and just voices. Once upon a time seniors were dependable GOP voters, but not any more

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/04/06/upshot/older-voters.html

FYI for political junkies concerned about voter/suppression "integrity" laws making it harder for minorities and seniors to vote. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/16-states-made-it-harder-to-vote-this-year-but-26-made-it-easier/
When, under the guise of combatting non-existent election fraud because mail-in ballots per Trump are corrupt, some states have made it harder to vote by mail, requiring documentation hard to get by older voters, including driver's licenses, and then restricting access to drop boxes. These suppression measures will hurt seniors the most.   Traditionally, Republicans have benefitted from absentee and mail-in voters because seniors were their traditional, dependable base, but this may change.  The impact of such voter suppression measures will be fodder for political scientists'  analysis post-November 2024.

From my March 12 post this year:

Trump seems determined to turn off older voters.   The demographic of voters over 65 is the second largest group of those who vote. " Cutting Medicare and Social Security" is not a phrase that will win friends and influence older voters.  He immediately backtracked, saying he would just cut waste. However, his GOP MAGA party is serious about cutting Medicare and Social Security, and the question becomes, if President, would he sign such legislation.  House Republicans float changes to Social Security in budget proposal (axios.com)

Trump had been losing them, and now he is actively turning them off of his MAGA world.  Vintage Trump.   Instead of trying to bring more into his base, he is committing political malpractice because now he is saying he is open to cutting Medicare and Social Security without saying how. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/11/politics/trump-entitlements-social-security-medicare/index.html#:~:text=Former%20President%20Donald%20Trump%20on,primary%20rivals%20over%20the%20issue.

Biden responded: “If anyone tries to cut Social Security or Medicare, or raise the retirement age again, I will stop them,” Biden said during a speech in New Hampshire. “This morning, Donald Trump said cuts to Social Security and Medicare are on the table again.”  https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/biden-pounces-trump-eyes-cuts-social-security-medicare-rcna142920

That there needs to be financial shoring up, who does it,  and who gets hurt just leaves the threat out there.  Do you really trust the GOP to do the best for Social Security and Medicare if they get their hands on Congress or the Oval Office? The GOP has had to destroy Medicare and Social Security on their radar, ideologically motivated since the day they were created. They seem to think turning it over to the Wall Street casino and letting for-profit insurers with their fancy advertising and high overhead run and ruin the programs. *

Going on the attack. A formula for Democrats keeping the House in 2022 (revised, updated))

Update May 5, 2022: This is more like it: Biden Comes Out Swinging Against GOP’s 'Extreme' MAGA Agenda | Politics | US News

Updated  May 2,2022 and revised from an April 9 post. What will make a difference in the 2022 midterms?  Slogans have a role in messaging. They put long lists into a context and can be used in both attacks and defense:  In 2022, they can be both national and locally applied. Some possibilities: the GOP is a" just to say no to fixes to family financial struggles", or a MAGA candidate can be tagged in a swing district as "just too extreme for us", or on Ukraine and democracy, and big pharma the question put to certain candidates becomes "on whose side are you on anyway?"

Here is how the races could be shaping up as seen in April 2022. and  a possible winning overarching themes and slogans for Democrats which puts their contrast with GOP candidates in context. . Going on the attack  instead of just playing defense is an old bit of wisdom: The best defense is a great offense. Calling out the GOP as the party of "just say no" to helping families with day-to-day finances or tagging Qnuts and MAGA  cult members as too extreme for the district are attack slogans that could be fortified with national messaging at the same time. After two years of trying, evidence of the steal has yet to be found and those who keep on spouting the fantasy are either lying or deaf, dumb and blind. We have witnessed the gut reaction of those immediately post January 6, especially from Kevin McCarthy even consider asking Trump to retire in taped conversations, and to reverse themselves when they realize Trump is still the power to which they must bow. The best I heard recently is to call the party a party dominated by "loonies and liars". Another is "The 2022 battle cry needs to be, "A vote for House Republicans, is a vote to destroy democracy."  Both of these attack slogans are credited to Tom Rogers,  of NEWSWEEK, and formr Colorado Senator Tim Wirth.  Attacks like these need to be direct, simple, and pointed and they should not leave voters having to listen to long lists just to extract and deduce the point being made.  .These slogans then should be followed up with what the Democrats have done for your family or national security as a contrast in context of the slogan and the details of why they think so.. How effective these slogans will be depends  how skillfully  it is applied to the more district, state, and local races given the opponents' records on these issues...  With MAGA and Trump still in control of primary elections, it is probable that GOP candidates will be chosen because of their loyalty to Trumpism.  That is an opportunity for Democrats in the general election to appeal to moderates and fence sitters in swing districts. .   All politics in 2022 is local and campaigns need to be tailored to each Congressional district though national themes and slogans can back up local campaigns and put them in context.

The focus in swing districts should be on reaching swing voters.A good way to look at this is which states flipped from voting for Donald Trump in 2016 to Joe Biden in 2020 and now have competitive congressional races in 2022? Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia flipped to Biden."   That same analysis can be applied to identifying  swing  House districts  there and elsewhere. Cultural issues, racism expressed now in CRT school and parental control battles, fear of brown people invading us from our borders, religious fervor against gays and trans, and anti-choice, will be the currents against which Democrats will be swimming. These issues have no impact on what bugs most voters: the economy. Those are value and belief issues that are not debatable  , but could be attacked as too extreme to the particular district, local and state races.

It might make a difference in contested districts if Democrats can go on the offensive and pin MAGA candidates as un-American, and not caring about democracy, preferring Putin- like autocracies. Ukraine support is similar to the dilemma facing American in 1940, 1941 when the US was toying with arming England before Pearl Harbor.. The deciding judgment call became based on making the world safe for democracy, our own democracy. (Thanks to historian Michael Beschloss for that observation of history)..Reminder: 63 House member (including a few Democrats) voted against a pro NATO resolution recently. All  Republicans voted against reducing the cost of diabetes drugs. For candidates in specific districts like them, they should be asked" on whose side are you, anyway?", Russia and Bid Pharma?

However,  above, cultural issues and democracy v autocracy, polls show the public policy issue on all minds is the economy  narrowed to a single problem, inflation, but the GOP persists as  the party of just saying no to family relief. The GOP has gone off on   tangents that have nothing to do with improving  the economy, dealing with inflation,  or pocket book relief health care costs, especially diabetes meds , and roads addressed because " Just saying no" fixes nothing that has to do with the economy..   This presents an opportunity to list what Democrats have accomplished in the past two years.  If the opposing candidate is not an incumbent, they still are talking the party line of just say no to any relief to families.

Dealing with the lingering "stop the steal" candidates, there is a  local Colorado race that  has national implications and interest regarding voter integrity. The GOP talks a game about voter integrity, but they want to rig it to be able to support the candidates they favor. Voter integrity as they define it only applies to them, enabling them to wreck the ability to provide safeguards for everyone and to trample the laws in place to protect ballots for all. Colorado, a candidate for Secretary of State,  Tina Peters, is  a county clerk indicted for criminal violation of duty to secure 2020 ballots as proscribed by law. She is a perfect candidate to hold up as a poster child of a QNUT  dominated political party and she just got the support in her party's state assembly, as did other "stop the steal" candidates for state wide office and Senate.. Her defense  against the criminal charge is being funded by My Pillow Guy.  Given the blue tint of the state, the state GOP is vulnerable to be branded as too extreme, just as their candidates for other state and district offices  are.
