Why US Orban and Putin lovers are delusional and and how they are dangerous

The mutual support and admiration society of US, Orban, and Putin lovers have a familiar ring. It is part of the same anti-democracy movement that permeates MAGA, and it starts with Donald Trump.  It is coming to a head with aid to Ukraine as House members and some Senators are whining; why doesn't Europe do more or let us just let them rot.  Yesterday, Orban of Hungry, the darling of CPAC, Trump, and the crazed MAGAs in Congress, revealed himself as a bonafide ally of Russia. Orban yesterday successfully blocked EU aid to Ukraine, just as the anti-democracy elements in Congress have done it so far by pulling a Tuberville, using an unrelated domestic issue of anti-immigrations on the Southern Border., They obviously do not care much for American national security with their irresponsible disregard,  using threats to undermine our national security as a tool to score points against Biden and his agenda and to promote Trump's attempt to get a second term...   Putin is just waiting for MAGA.Trump to get elected so they will do what he has been able to do: defeat the independence and pro-democracy war efforts in Ukraine and to absorb Ukraine eventually into Russia, having eliminated any viable opposition and with the knowledge the US will no longer come to Ukraine's defense.  Next are the Baltics. . There is already so much evidence of what each one of these participants in this axis of Putin lovers within the US and abroad want that they present both a threat to domestic pro-democracy and national security interests.,  Hungary blocks €50bn of EU funding for Ukraine (bbc.com)

.  This is so similar to 1938-1941 it should be instructive of what a loser this MAGA/isolationist/America First is. Making America weak again is no protection from empire-building dictators.  We know how that turned out.  It is not unlike the leadup to Pearl Harbor, so richly described by Rachel Maddow's recent book" Prequel," with allies of Htiler in the US as part of NAZI wannabes, agents, American Firsters, German-loving, and FDR haters did to keep the US out of the war in Europe during Hitler's march Poland, blitzing England, grabbing Sudetenland, and Poland. They succeeded...until Germany declared war on the United States.  The weakness of the US to keep on top of national security and defense protection against potential aggressive enemies also led to Pearl Harbor.  Before we knew it, we were fighting a two-front World War.   Appeasement of the US fascist sympathizers,, and appeasers in the US was what Hitler counted on to keep the US out of Europe, and with Pearl Harbor, he mistakenly calculated the US was too weak in both mind, will, and resources to fight back in a war with both Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

We are in danger of leading Putin down an illusional primrose path to his easy reassembling of the old USSR empire. The only difference is Putin is not advocating Marxism but Russian ultra-nationalism and a dictatorship that oppresses opposition, destroys smaller countries' independence to govern themselves and achieve their own prosperity, eliminates opposition press,  and protects the wealth and interests of the powerful, using force, assassination, and imprisonment as their tools.  It is a recipe for years of violence, conflict, and bloody revolt.

It is the ultimate stupidity for this minority of anti-democracy MAGAs to do what they are doing and, likewise, the ignorance and wrong-headedness of their supporters. This is undermining American national security interests that will eventually lead to the US being involved directly with not only contributions of treasure but also the loss of our own blood.  History will come back and bite us in the rump.

Dictator Putin has made it his goal to reassemble the empire that was once USSR .. His ultra-nationalism has Russian mass support.  That wannabe dictator Trump has made it clear he will end aid to Ukraine and just hand it on a silver platter to Russia, and Putin just has to hold on long enough of the trench warfare there until Trump gets his hands on the Oval Office. Putin will then be free to roll across their former satellites in Eastern Europe. because he will be under the impression no one will stop him. Putin’s plan for a new Russian Empire includes both Ukraine and Belarus - Atlantic Council    To think otherwise, you are kidding yourself.

This sabotaging Ukraine aid is because a small group of self-aggrandizing,  delusional, and isolationist politicians want to score anti-Biden points. They have figured out a strategy to do it in the face of much larger bi-partisan support of Ukraine. The Tuberville strategy of holding national security interests hostage to anti-abortion policy is working here, too.  The pro-Putin/Orban fawners are using immigration/southern border policies to hold hostage further Ukraine support. They are tail-wagging the dog, and they are the greatest danger to our national security interests that exist at the moment, with actions that will make America look weaker again, encouraging an empire-building Putin to continue his march into the rest of Eastern Europe.  The difference is that Biden appears ready to "compromise" on border policy; the goal is shared: getting those who truly are seeking refuge from home country oppression separated from those who are seeking a better economic future, as the current law requires..

The main difference on immigration between Biden and Trump/MAGA, though, is humane treatment, not putting "illegals" in concentration camps, deporting them even if kids and spouses are "documented" and they have been living here,  otherwise being law-abiding, for years. Trump's Orban-like attitude toward immigrants is the same that fueled that Hungarian dictator Orban to power in the face of Syrian refugees, that Immigrants need to be stopped from coming into the US because they are: poisoning our blood'. That is a racist bullhorn worthy of Hitler's fascists. Trump's anti-immigrant comments draw rebuke | CNN Politics

A word to those on the left from one who is hardly viewed as right-wing on civil rights and domestic issues. This initiative from the extremists on the right has nothing to do with the immorality of war; it is a political strategy to give them more power and an anti-democratic ideology. Playing their game of Putin love/isolationist/ appeasement will only lead to the possibility of getting ourselves involved in a hotter, wider war, not with a proxy like Ukraine, but actively ourselves. If we reduce our defense budget by the 10% Ukraine is costing us, do you really think the savings will be applied to domestic social programs instead of reducing taxes on the rich?    Do not be played.  The reason we are in this position now is because of a power-mad hyper-nationalist Putin, determined to recreate an empire they lost in ending the Cold War.

Learning from history a challenge: current events are not always connected

One of my most nagging puzzles is why voters do not see the connection between the emergence of fascism in the 1930s and the similarity of Donald Trump and his followers.  There are books devoted to making the connection, but frankly, few read books these days.  Rachel Maddow in her book Prequel has done a yeoman's job of educating so many about the history of how fascists were so influential in the US in the late 1930s and even into 1944 after Germany declared war on the US and the war effort was in full swing.   We know how that ended. Been there, done that.  The question becomes, could it have happened to the US, too?  Can it happen in 2024?  It came close in the late 1930's. What Donald Trump has been proposing to do lately if elected is "full-on Hitler," as Joe Scarborough tagged it recently.  Yawn.  More politics. Who cares? More over-the-top gibberish from the never-Trumpers, libtards.

Those of us who studied the years leading up to World War II as part of our academic studies in college were aware of what went down in 1930's -1944. I was in shock learning how JFK's father, the ambassador to the UK in those years, admired Hitler. There is nothing like having lived through post-war World War II as my generation did to wonder how we, the US, could have been so foolish and blind to fall for Father Coughlin as many other fascist lovers did. Influential Senators had such political power that it kept FDR from staying out of the armed conflict and just armed England with weapons as it was being reduced to rubble in the Blitz.  Unfortunately, there are not many of us left with that hands-on or immediate post-war experience. My reaction was to spend my junior year in Berlin, 1958-1959, to see if I could get a feel for how such a well-educated and civilized society like Germany could have bought into Hitler.  I never exactly got an answer because, looking back at it, the reason the surviving Germans were so similar to the people in the US.  Despite that, I never dreamed it could happen here because the fascists were considered so evil. Now, via Trump, it is revisiting us.  The folly of the American Firsters, the German-loving isolationists of the 1930s, and the same ones today is that the US is not an island. We are even more interconnected by the internet and trade pandemics, so our economy and national security are more intertwined with the world than in 1941. Europe fears a Trump second term for fear he would not support them and Ukraine. Economist calls Trump "biggest danger" for 2024 (axios.com)   One problem is that in today's media and life experience, we do not make that connection between history and current events that are happening at such speed and in such detail and conflicting opinions that we do not have time or brain bandwidth to absorb and reflect on what history teaches us about what we should not ever try again.

A perfect example of how current events not part of history books or connected to history are playing out in the Hamas-Israel war. Whether the plight of the Palestinians will be an issue a year from now is unknown.  The obvious unconcern for their safety by the IDF has hit a sympathetic vibe among younger voters and the public at large.  Biden's polls, already poor, took a very big dip in the past month with the messaging on the Hamas-Israel war. How short of our memories. However, much depends upon the progress made in the two-state solution and Biden's support for years and if he can engineer that, as well as to credit for his wisdom and skills.   In short,  much can happen between now and November 2024. Also, the participation by neo-Nazis in pro-Palestinian demonstrations should be a red flag to university students that are supposedly educated about history. They are being played by some ugly forces. . Neo-Nazis and the Far-Right Are Trying to Hijack Pro-Palestine Protests (vice.com)   Trump has also called to ban Gaza refugees from immigrating to the US and well as his history of stoking Islamaphobia.  That is the contrast that Biden can make.  Opinion | A short history of President Trump’s anti-Muslim bigotry - The Washington Post

Defacto appeasement: West's weak response to Russia's aggression in Georgia and Crimea greenlight Putin in Ukraine

Did the West's weak response to Russia's aggression in Georgia and Crimea greenlight Putin in Ukraine? In retrospect, the West's failure to object strongly enough to Putin's advancement and war in Georgia and his takeover of Crimea sent the message that his takeover of Ukraine would be met with the same tolerable slap on the hands.  This defacto appeasement by weak response did not prevent Putin's invasion of Ukraine but only greenlighted him. It contributed to Putin's misconception and an epic miscalculation that the West would not respond to Russia's invasion of Ukraine with a NATO in such disarray. Rattle a threat of nuclear war would be all that was needed to keep the west at bay. Putin had good reason to think that since Donald Trump had done little to object to Russia's grab of Crimea and the 8 years of fighting in the  Donbas region of Ukraine other than a slap on the hand of sanctions on oligarch friends of Putin, supplying anti-tank weapons, and retraining of Ukraine's army. Trump had done what he could to weaken NATO, threatening to end America's support or honor the mutual defense purpose of the alliance.

Trump attempted to make the case now as he kicked off the 2024 campaign that he alone could end the war in Ukraine that would prevent World War III.  Donald Trump speaking before CPAC said he knows how to end the Ukraine war and "prevent world war III" because only he "can talk with Putin".  He could end the war in one day even before he was sworn in, claimed. If it is appeasing Russia he has in mind, we have seen that scene before both in recent years and  85 years ago. There are those, fortunately still a minority in Congress, who agree with Trump. They are fools and history ignoramuses.

If we have learned nothing from history, it is that appeasement does not stop a war when the aggressor has made his intentions obvious, and public, and uses it to aggrandize his own power base. That was true of Hitler in 1938, and it is true of Putin in 2023. Appeaser is a toxic word to pin on politicians to all but the naive and uneducated who follow them. It is time we do some educating about how that has played out in both the past five years and 85 years ago.

Would Trump have his Chamberlain moment if he got his second term? "Anschluss" and "peace in our time" after Chamberlain's negotiations with Hitler that gave him what he wanted, " appeasement", "America First", and "Fortress America" are words that also come from the year of 1938 leading up to World War II. Presidential elections in 2024 could be our 1938 moment.  America First is also a political force in 2023. Appeasement is not yet in wide use in 2023, but it does describe Trump's policies toward Russia. Anschluss refers to Germany and Austria becoming one under Hitler, and Putin does not consider Ukraine an independent country, but part of Russia. The term Fortress America does not yet apply to isolationists, but should, because of the fallacy that America is not interconnected with the rest of the world and we, stupidly, can protect ourselves without the help of allies if we are armed enough because there are oceans on both sides of our continent.  The mentality exists in 2023, but the term went out of fashion with Pearl Harbor.

At this point, it appears that Trump will still win in the primaries and will be the GOP candidate in 2024. Looking at Trump's relations with Russia in his first term, we know what he has in mind if he ever got into the oval office again. Sure, he knows how to end the war in Ukraine. The problem is, if his past predicts his future action, it would put wind in Putin's sails to continue his Anschluss of Ukraine and return of the rest of eastern Europe into satellites again by subversion or invasion.

Trump's actions in his first term directly led to Putin's invasion of Ukraine and Putin's miscalculation. While prior administrations also looked the other way as Putin began to use force to grab his neighbors, Trump not only looked the other way at Putin's success in grabbing lands, he cleared the path by subverting NATO's power to block him. He also had a bromance with Putin, admiring his leadership style and trusting Putin's national security folks over his own in an infamous NATO meeting in Helsinki.  No wonder Putin miscalculated. He counted on Trump having a second term and Biden having lost a step in old age, so it is better to strike while he still could. He was wrong in one of the most epic miscalculations so far in this century. To think Trump ends the Ukraine conflict in minutes as he boasted at the early March  CPAC  convention is easy to predict based on his past actions. Speculation is well-founded that he would just hand over to Russia the eastern third of Ukraine and then stand by as Russia continues the march into the leftovers as the west stopped arming Ukraine, any treaty promises notwithstanding. That Trump would even honor NATO'S mutual defense clause is doubtful since he already tried to declare it dead once before, leading to Putin's continued march into the Baltics and Poland for starters, in spite of their NATO membership.  It would only take Trump a five-minute phone call to Putin to start the appeasement ball rolling.   Trump could crow "peace in our time" after that fateful phone call to Putin,  but peace would be short-lived as experience with Putin has already demonstrated and advocated publicly. . His ambitions lie further than Ukraine but to the nine countries bordering Russia.  Ukraine was just the low-hanging fruit, he thought. That Trump could be pinned down to say just how he would end the Ukraine war is a worthy, if futile, campaign attack by opponents, but his silence could also be damning and verification of his appeasement intent.

To say that appeasement would end Putin's stated goal to reassemble the old USSR's empire or lessen the chances of World War III is at best nuts.  Appeasement did not stop Hitler from seeking " lebensraum", nor would it stop Putin who has staked his continued dictatorship of Russia on hyper-nationalist appeal to a reincarnation of the USSR'S former glory days that is a rallying cry that is quite popular with the Russian masses. Putin's polls have never been higher.  It would also give a green light for President Xi to grab Taiwan and likewise extend the Chinese empire to southeast Asia and beyond.

This segment on America First and isolationism What is wrong about America First and isolationism. It depends. has been moved to its own separate blog posting: 3/7/23. This subject is a big one. It is not simple as sloganeering would make you think. So what's wrong with "America first" and isolationism?.  It depends if we are talking about national defense or economic interests.  Trump himself sneers at those who support strong military alliances, like NATO, as globalists.  When it comes to national defense and security, isolationist policies shoot us in our own feet by making America first America alone, with defense all by ourselves. National security interests are often entangled in trade and economic concerns, especially when China is involved. That takes a balancing act, targeted tradeoffs, in the extent of reliance on sensitive imports. For more, go to the 3/7/blog posting.

Why should "appeasement" be a dirty word. If  Trump followers have forgotten history or slept through that chapter in school. here is a refresher course in less than a one-minute read.: In March 1938 Hitler completed joining Austria with Germany,  Next on Hitler's list was Czechlovakia's Sudentenland and a few other smaller areas Chamberlain declared "peace in our time" as he made the deal with Hitler (he failed to read Mein Kampf) re: Czechoslovakia, September 1938. Within a year, Hitler had completed his takeover or placed Nazi Hungarians in charge of all of Czechoslovakia and marched into Poland.  World War II had begun. In June 1940, the Germans took over France. The German blitz bombing of England began in September 1940, two years after the declaration of "the peace in our time".  In June 1941, Germany began its invasion of Russia, betraying a pact with Stalin.  December 7, 1941, was Pearl Harbor, as imperial Japan also sensed our military weakness and devotion to isolationism to hold onto our Pacific dominance.   Its timeline to build an empire began in 1931 and included a treaty with Hitler and Italy in 1940.

Those who think Putin who has declared his intent to reassemble Russian influence in the USSR years over eastern Europe or that Chi in China is calculating US resolve to protect Taiwan from their publicly stated eventual goal are kidding themselves. Neither has made it a secret of their intent.

The ignorance and danger of 2023 right wing American Firsters

While the likelihood is faint now that the extreme right-wing nuts in the new Congress will get their way to damage support of Ukraine's war against the Russian invasion, they are still a danger to the US national security. If anything, they are ignorant of world reality and history.  Russians and Putin had publicly expressed designs on reassembling the Soviet empire boundaries, so Putin invaded Ukraine first. Consider it Putin's epic miscalculation valid only so long as US and NATO continue their support of Ukraine. Others like him wait in the wings in this test of US and NATO resolve: China and Formosa and Serbia/Russians in the Balkans. The GOP takeover of Congress will give these neo-American Firsters an opportunity to gain more power with an outsized megaphone and an aura of legitimacy. They may be a small minority now, but they may tap into a larger group of sympathizers. There has always been a vein of isolationists running through American political history, and their assumption is America is an island that does not need to care about the rest of the world or divert human and financial resources to deal with aggressors on another continent.

That isolationist and American Firsters' attitude existed before America finally entered World War I and II after the realization that national interests were fundamental and severe. It did take Pearl Harbor to even convince those who had prescribed to the American First movement, and the American First movement died temporarily. It has begun to emerge again in 2022 in the form of right-wingers making the same pre-WW II arguments that showed ignorance of reality and history and exhorting others to ignore the danger to US national security. Now, the GOP will control the House for at least the next two years, though narrowly, but the latter-day American Firsters will have a media platform, a shrill voice, to undermine Ukraine's support. They will have more power to give cover to fellow believers equally ignorant to join them. While the odds are they will not succeed, they cannot be ignored and must constantly be marginalized. Otherwise, those in the world who want to invade neighboring countries may miscalculate their odds of success and give themselves the green light to proceed.

Excerpts from my Feb. 24, 2022 post as Russia invaded Ukraine, I asked why should Americans care about Ukraine. In short, it is a stitch in time to save nine. How dangerous and unstable do we want this world to be? What is so great about having the freedom that these messy democracies offer? If the west does not inflict pain on Russia for this, it could inspire others elsewhere to go and do likewise out of lust for taking and invading other lands their ideology considers their own. The message we send should not be the west is so divided and weak that we can be ignored. Why wouldn't our adversaries think, why not give it a try when think they can succeed if the opposition is weak or unwilling to stop them? Trump refused to support the mutual defense clause of NATO, as well as indicating he would not defend the Baltic NATO members. Biden furthered the impression to Russia that the US was still on an isolationist path with his messy withdrawal from Afghanistan. Biden reversed Trump's sabotage of NATO, and Russia's threats of territorial grabs by military force also contributed to a rejuvenated NATO. The purpose of NATO was originally to stop Russian aggression just like what is happening today. Other areas of the world with predators waiting to invade their neighbors for their related ethnic makeup are North Korea v South Korea, China v Taiwan, Serbia v Bosnia. Except for Serbia (allied with Russia), all of these potential aggressors have nuclear weapons and could start World War III., as Putin reminded us yesterday that Russia has them, too.. There are those on the right in the US who think we should have moved US troops into Ukraine just like the Russians threatened to do. Biden wisely did not want to spark World War III and a nuclear confrontation with Russia. He took that risk off the table because 1) we did not have a treaty with Ukraine to require this because Ukraine was not a member of NATO. 2) we would be doing what Russia threatened and did that we said was so wrong, only we would have taken the first step. This is not a pre-nuclear world. Get real
World War II was Hitler's epic miscalculation based on his reading of western governments' weak resolve to defend themselves from Nazi control. In the 1930s, some of the same isolationist sentiments now espoused by FOX talkers flooded the radio waves, and radio demagogue Father Coughlin was a supporter of the style of Hitler. Such isolationists do not need a resurrection of Father Coughlin when we have Tucker Carlson and MAGA followers fawning over Russia and patting them on the back. Thanks to other similar America First and isolationists advocates and politicians in 1939-1941, public sentiment mostly opposed entry into World War II until after the Blitz in London, Czech's Sudetenland was handed over to Hitler to appease him, Austria was joined to Germany, Poland was conquered by the Nazis, and US looked useless and weak.
Japan then took this as evidence they could take over the South Pacific and Pearl Harbor happened

Trump's real suckers and the sucker punched

Donald Trump visiting the  troops over Christmas proclaimed a memorable line which will haunt him for years.   " We are no longer  the suckers of  the world." he declared to justify an order to  withdraw US troops from Syria. The real suckers  are those who believe that Trump's foreign policy is putting America First, when in reality it is making our adversaries stronger.  In tweeting the orders, he  blind sided and  sucker punched his own advisers who had tried to refrain  him from taking such a move..

The tweet was an abrupt  reversal of a prior policy and a slap in the face to his own national security advisers . In  their eyes withdrawal hurt  American national security interests and it gave a boost to the power of US adversaries, Russia and Iran, allowing them to increase their influence in the region at USA's  expense. The US national security advisers believed our effective allies, the Kurds, could not carry on  the fight without US air and US special forces' support. ISIS  may have lost the bulk of the territory they once controlled, but they were not defeated. They still had the knowhow and an appealing  ideology waiting for an opportunity to re-emerge.

Trump's tweeted orders resulted in the exit from his administration of those who were considered the adults in the room and  who were keeping America safe from some of his worst impulses. Trump made the spur of the moment decision to withdraw from Syira in the middle of a telephone conversation with the President of Turkey,  Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a dictator Trump  admires. Turkey views the US allies, the Kurds, as anti-Turk terrorists and a threat to their national security. Trump never bothered to give a heads up to the Secretary of Defense General James Mattis or the diplomat coordinating our allies' participation. Both Mattis and the diplomat quit.  Their advice was ignored and they could not in good conscience follow those orders.

Trump's timing and method of reversing policy may have been impulsive, but it should not have been a surprise. It was consistent with his  long held views. Trump's  policy wishes dated to his  campaign days. He often stated  foreign policy preferences were  to let Russia and Syria's President Assad take over the conflict.  Trump has  frequently indicated he was willing to lift sanctions and overlook Russia’s take over the Crimea. Weakening  NATO, a thorn in Russia's side, has also been Trump's goal. We do not know if Trump himself conspired with the Russians  to help him win in 2016.  That awaits Mueller's Special Counsel report. However, Mueller's  court filings reveal a Russia who took us for  suckers  by infiltrating , using and manipulating our media to influence the outcome of the 2016 Presidential campaign in order to elect a Russia friendly Trump.

Trump had always insisted  throughout the campaign and his presidency that the US has been taken for suckers for fighting for our allies who were unwilling to pay US for its assistance. He called that campaign plank “America First”. That helping allies  was in US national security interests was never a concept he understood or bought into. That it was better to fight our adversaries abroad instead of in the homeland did not concern him.  This isolationist viewpoint has surfaced before in our history. How did that work out?, These latter day American Firsters  believe isolationism will keep the US free of foreign control over our country. The lessons of post World War I exposed  the failure of isolationism, an American First movement that refused to provide the will or power to stop Hitler's rise.  Intentionally ignoring the threat of Japan contributed to the  Pearl Harbor surprise.
