A humane approach to immigration policy is the bi-partisan bill Trump killed because he wanted the issue to still be hot as he campaigns. There is also a possibility to contrast policies that may have a broader appeal to those who indeed want the border crisis to be handled, but not with the cruelty of Trump's plan.  What the bi-partisan bill lacks is Trump's plan to use the US Army to break up families with mixed status (an estimated 6.7 million families) and deport 20K total without documents, putting them in concentration camps waiting for deportation. 

Harris  needed to revive flagging Hispanic support of Democrats (Trump 46%; Biden was 40%) that was a reverse of past statistics and the left flank of Democrats uneasy with even the bi-partisan bill Trump killed. The first step is to attack Trump for killing the bi-partisan bill. which Harris just did. Project 2025 head steps down, but their crusade continues with Trump their tool

The ideological shaping of the Project 2025 text may be stopped with a change in leadership of its authors, as Trump denies any connection. As a project of the Heritage Foundation, the recruiting and screening of applicants to replace civil servants with right-wing Christian ideologues continue, and Project 2025 remains the blueprint for any future president to use is still available. Trump looks like their tool to enact this subversion of the executive branch. Remember, he tried to replace career service employees with loyalists to him by abusing Schedule F when he was president, but his staff had convinced him it was against the law. In a Trump second term, with immunity from criminal prosecution Trump and a compliant Supreme Court could take a different take.

The Democrats need to take a stronger line of attack to keep Trump from distancing himself. Trump so far denies he knows anything about it, but his former staff wrote it. Trump should not get away with such vague or deceptive denials and be needs to be pinned on how he has supported specific parts of Project 2025, including replacing civil service, by using evidence and video clips documenting it.

Hot air or a real threat to democracy by Trump: Vote for him He will fix it so no need to be engaged in the next election?.

Was this hot air or another real threat to democracy by Trump in his recent speech to a Christian right-wing political group on July 27?.   Trump:  If elected, Christian-related agenda will be "fixed" so much so that they would no longer need to be politically engaged."You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what? It’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians."  Is this as bad as it sounds? Yes.  It could be seen as a threat to democracy in a couple of  ways

1)  Trump's "fix" speech was an ear-splitting dog whistle, a way to infer a promise of his implementation of an unpopular Christian right-wing agenda without being so obvious about it or addressing the details that would alarm other voters. 

 2) The votes of those opposing them would be suppressed or overturned.  Does he mean free and fair elections representing the will of the people, the fundamental characteristic of a democracy, will be "fixed" so it would not exist in the future?   This "fix" fits with another quotable slip of his tongue:" I will be a dictator on day one." 

 It is not puffery. Trump has credible plans to"fix"  both implementations of the policies and the election process. Project 2025 contains a plan for Trump to replace career service employees and appointees with loyalists and those who pass a litmus test approved by extremely conservative Christians, as well as implement the public policies they want with or without legislation. Trump's 2024 campaign promises and the Heritage Foundation all have plans for overturning the majority vote by such means as successfully carrying off the fake elector scheme in 2028 (JD Vance pledges to do what Pence failed to do if he is VP in 2028)  while undermining faith in the election's legitimacy with the "big lie", a redux of 2020.  https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/gop-group-project-2025-floats-conspiracy-theory-biden-111863482   The Supreme Court has made these plans even more possible with its bias toward Trump's interests, including granting him immunity from criminal prosecution and election-related rulings.

Yes, it does not specifically propose a federal abortion ban, but elsewhere in the document, it, in effect, does. Project 2025 supports the "culture of Life" and fetal personhood, which, if applied, would ban contraception and other related rights and procedures.

The work for the "fix" the Christian right wants is already underway and is well funded. The plan is in black and white in the 900-page document produced by Project 2025. The plan is already being excuted by the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025's mother ship, The Foundation is already screening and taking names of those applying for jobs in the next Trump administration, ready to go on day one.  A compliant Supreme Court giving Trump immunity from criminal prosecution is already in place.to deal with suits and decisions that arise.  If Harris is about the future of democracy, so are Trump's promises that should scare all but the MAGA faithful.

Trump wants to make us 1930 again while Biden points with pride at the present and Harris represents the future

 Trump's slogan should be revised to MAKE AMERICA 1930 AGAIN.   Trump opines that America is a failure, a stupid country, ignoring that America leads the world under Biden/Harris in economic recovery from COVID-19 and has formulated the strongest alliances since the end of World War II.  Instead, Trump sought a country that would join with Russia and dance to its tune on Ukraine, claiming peace in our time then, just like British PM Chamberlain gave away Czechoslovakia to the Nazis in 1937. Like then, there is a determined aggressor to establish a past greatness opening and publicly stated to establish Russia's boundaries of the old USSR now and to destroy the mutual defense treaties standing in its way. Not only does this mimic the influence of German sympathizers in America, which finally led to US involvement in WWII, but it even parrots the title of the 1930s isolationists, American First. Trump's economic policies also echo the mistakes and policies of the 1930s. In 1930,  tariffs were raised on imports, which kicked the Depression into high gear. Trump's plan to raise tariffs on all imports across the board, as was tried then, per 16 Nobel laureate economists recently, would cause both inflation and recession. Like in the 1930s, right-wingers fought tooth and nail against FDR's New Deal supporting access to health care and social security, while MAGA proposes to cut them both back in the Project 2025 vision. Like in the 1930s, the favored group in governance and policy were racially white, reflecting the faces raised at GOP conventions and Trump rallies. To preserve the JIM Crow era of the 1930s, Trump and his Project 2025 want to stamp out diversity and equity, DEI. in government, and his party schemes how to suppress minority voters' access to the ballot. If he loses the elections, Trump's advocacy of political violence will put January 6 on steroids. Like in the 1930s, women are to be relegated to subservient status. control over their own health decisions, or even birth control in the provisions of Project 2025. Taking this a step further is Trump's VP pick of, JD Vance, who says even abused women should stay in their marriage and take the beatings while eliminating no-fault divorce, just as it was in 1930.

Trump trash talks to convince voters that they should abandon democracy for his autocracy. Biden's reason for passing the torch to Kamala is to preserve the democracy we have had for 250 years, realizing his age was standing in the way of why he ran for president in the first place: to stop Trump. Trump's case: Only he can fix stupid and failing America. This contrasts with what Biden has accomplished in three and a half years.

There is unfinished business, but even despite Trump sabotaging a very conservative bi-partisan immigration reform bill, Biden has managed to reduce illegal migrant crossings to the same level they were when Trump left office.  

 Trump and their supporters are speaking the Kremlin line in contrast with Biden, who is building up alliances from NATO to Asia.  Biden's alliances have boxed in aggressive, expansionist countries like China and Russia. In the 1930's it was the rise of Nazi Germany and we know how that turned out. America Firsters opened appeasing doors to Germany then, and, unable to distinguish friends from enemies, they are at it once again in the face of a Russian land grab. That was as stupid in the 1930's as it is now. Even most of NATO is rearming, adding Sweden and Finland, and increasing defense budgets. Germany, which virtually has no standing army, is now rebuilding its military from the ground up.

 In the aftermath of the pandemic, America is leading the world in economic recovery by every measure, and the trend lines are still improving. We have the highest GDP growth, and inflation is down to manageable levels, as the unemployment level is the best in 50 years, and wages rise, too, for those employed. Is using DEI the new racist dog whistle?

 Getting rid of affirmative action has long been on the GOP agenda.  Is the DEI the new racist dog whistle?  DEI is the personnel policy reflecting diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout government. So it appears it is not only a code for a racist dog whistle to appeal to the racist elements of the Trump base, now with Kamala Harris, the adversary, it is also an encompassing of both racism and misogyny to be part of the MAGA campaign for the next 100 days.  If you hear Trmp or a GOP candidate use the term as an evil to be stamped out, you know the audience they are reaching.

DEI...I had to look it up because I first ran into it in reading Project 2025. Now we have it. Here is how I interpret it. All people of color and women are inferior to white males, and the only way they can get ahead and/or get to par is to give them extra points. They were not discriminated against that needs to be offset by inclusion; they were just inferior. They refer to not only people of color but women, too. Project 2025 iDEI is racist and discriminatory against their base and explains the incompetence they believe is in the current regime.'s administration. It turns the concept of affirmative action to mean the opposite of anti-racism because it puts white males at a disadvantage.

I have run into that attitude in a discussion with a Trumpist recently, claiming the reason 'the "military is so weak" (which I asked to provide evidence since I saw the military is strong), and there was no response). I also had it inferred from another source. The only difference between Trump and Biden I could see about the military is the color of the brass in the Biden administration. It should be crystal clear to those not in the Trump core in America, by Trump's own twisted definition, autocracy (dictatorship on day one) is not a democracy, yet that is what he is claiming when at a recent rally post-assassination attempt; he "took a bullet for democracy." By making America as weak as it was in the 1930s, America will not be as ""great again. This Trump mantra is upside-down crazy talk, and it takes low-information voters to swallow this as the gospel truth. When it finally gets its act together, the Democratic party has plenty of ammunition to make its case, but it needs to sharpen its messaging and get in the MAGA's face to succeed. As he speaks, Trmp's party already has minions in place to overturn the November 2024 election should he lose the electoral vote (the most fundamental element of democracy: rule by the people) using pre-positioned loyal election officials and even political violence. (This is not  election integrity, but the opposite by election administration manipulation ) The blueprint for becoming an autocrat is in black and white in Project 2025, turning the executive branch and 50 thousand federal employees staffed by ideologues into a spoils system demanding all adhere to an ideology instead of allegiance to the rule of law and the Constitution. Trump tried that through Schedule F when he was in office but was stopped by staff. Now, his staff will be yes men in another term. Names have already been taken, and replacements have been applied and verified as true to their allegiance to the Heritage Foundation ideology.  Trump is beginning to understand how obnoxious Project 2025 is and trying to distance himself. He needs to be forced to tell just what part of Project 2025 he does not support. He should not be allowed to weasel out with a blanket "Well, it is radical and parts unnamed I disagree with").

 Especially damning are those parts in Project 2025 and elsewhere. Trump tried before and failed, but now can do it and succeed thanks to the Supreme Court's presidential immunity gift and loyalist appointments. Among them is putting Schedule F on steroids to replace civil servants with loyalists to the Project 2025 manifesto.  Trump has a history of political violence regarding the January 6 riots by "patriots" he summoned to the Capitol;   his demand of generals to conduct armed active military suppression of demonstrations (Lafayetttte Square, later orating the generals should be executed for that): calling neo-Nazi's fine people (Charlottesville); and his attempt to force and scare Pence to join in the fake electors' scheme.

Trump opines that America is a failure, ignoring that America leads the world under Biden/Harris in the economy's recovery from Covid and has formulated the strongest alliances since the end of World War II.  Instead, he sought a country that would join with Russia and dance to its tune on Ukraine, claiming peace in our time then (just as Chamberlain gave away Czechoslovakia in 1937. Like then, there is a determined aggressor to establish a past greatness opening and publicly stated of Germany then and to establish Russia's boundaries of the old USSR now) and to destroy the mutual defense assistance to and from allies. Not only does this mimic the actions leading to US involvement in WWII, it even parrots the title of the 1930s isolationists, American First. Trump's economic policies also echo the mistakes and policies of the 1930s. In the 1930s, tariffs were raised on imports, which kicked the Depression into high gear. Trump's plan to raise tariffs on all imports across the board, as was tried then, Per 16 Nobel laureate economists, in modern times, would cause inflation and recession. Like in the 1930s, right-wingers fought tooth and nail against supporting access to health care and social security and weakening them both in the Project 2025 vision. Like in the 1930s, the favored group in governance and policy were racially white, reflecting the faces raised at GOP conventions and Trump rallies.   Like in the 1930's, women are to be relegated to subservient status and no control over their own health decisions, or even birth control,  both in the provisions of Project 2025 (ideal family: women at home, men working, etc) and in his political party, as well as in his VP pick of JD Vance, who says even abused women should stay in their marriage and take the beatings.

How Project 2025 plans to destroy consumer and environmental protections beginning Day One

(Update 8/8/2024   Why I am giving focus to consumer and environmental issues: Thanks to Gov. Tim Walz, I now have a name to what I have been philosophically for the years I have been active in politics and business:  I am a kitchen table populist..and, like Harris, earned my spurs in a prosecutor's office as director of the DA white collar crime and consumer affairs unit.. When some 40 years ago, I ran for mayor with a platform of combatting Denver's brown cloud, protecting neighborhood quality of life, and safe from being a commuter's freeway through them with alternative transportation and mass transit.  I did not win, but came in 2nd in a field of 13, and still continued advocating for consumers and neighborhoods (taking a view protection case to the US Supreme Court), a radio talk show host, and as Denver's Clerk and Recorder, part of duties as an election commissioner, expanding voter access to minority neighborhoods. Later, I was an executive with a non-profit debt counseling service.  I was inspired by having married an immigrant with no command of English and had to take over the family's financial management..  It was a wake-up call to learn all I could to be competent. I wrote a book on the subject, The Colorado Consumer Handbook, which is now out of print.  )   

How  Project 2025 plans to sabotage and destroy environmental and consumer protections. They do it by replacing the administrative state with their ideological loyalists.; They are poison pills, time releasing for years after Trump is long gone.  The part of the administrative state Project 2025 document contains a plan to dismantle the government mechanism that protects consumers and the environment from unfair, dangerous, fraudulent practices in whatever they buy, the air they breathe, the truth of the advertising they see and hear, the water they drink, the media you access, the financial credit they use, and even access to abortion and birth control..  The mother of Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation, is already taking applicants to replace civil servants and appointees. Lists are prepared to begin on Day One of the second Trump administration. Invoking Schedule F or similar acts will permit 50K civil servants to be replaced by ideological fellow travelers. 

If you breach the New York Times paywall, you will see how the Heritage Foundation screens for ideological purity to their cause and the questions they ask of applicants.  It is similar to how the Supreme Court became the Trump Court by engineering the appointees. Like the Supreme Court, those ideologues will be in power for years after Trump leaves office.  . Even if Congress does not revise laws or courts get involved, they still can reach their goal of removing or sabotaging consumer and environmental protections. This is why big businesses love Trump; they resent and detest having to comply. By appointing MAGA loyal flunkies to these regulatory agencies, the proverbial foxes at the hen house door, what we have taken for granted for 50 years, will be crippled if they even survive as agencies. Judgment calls about compliance with existing laws and rules or impact on citizens vs. business interests will not motivate ideologues but whether they support the goals of the one in control, the president, when federal agencies are the designated administrators.  The Constitution requires the executive branch to faithfully carry out the legislation passed by Congress. That means that the priority changes to compliance with the law to comply with their ideology and the demands of the president, Trump, and desire to keep their jobs, which will be in jeopardy if they do not. Project 2025 is designed to take away consumer and environmental protections and influence decisions even on abortion and birth control. by replacing technical experts in these agencies with those pledging loyalty to Trump and the Project ideology rather than abiding by the intent and purpose of the agencies, making judgment calls, ignoring consumer complaints, and sabotaging the enforcement of the laws. If the agencies are open, the result is to stack the cards against the rest of us, normal, common, regular people. The only tool left is to sue on a case-by-case basis...and we know what that means with the Supreme Court firmly in the hands of MAGA and the cost of any litigation.  Like Roe vs Wade, we consumers have had these protections on the books for 50 years. We just take it for granted until we get screwed when they are sabotaged or removed, and then it is too late to fix it until enough get screwed by the thousands of unkind cuts over many years.

A note:. the Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity protects the president from being prosecuted for crimes if they commit them as part of their official duties.  It may or may not extend to those with "executive privilege".  That is subject to definitions and judgment calls and left mostly undetermined..  However, it does not protect all the federal ministers in the executive branch who may commit crimes. "I just was following orders" is not always a sure defense for those not protected by the Supreme Court's presidential immunity decisions by the  Trump-aligned super majority.  

The recent Chevron decision by Trump's dominated Supreme Court further kneecaps the power of agencies that issue rules and regulations now after extensive hearings and public input to interpret the laws Congress passes. Project 2025 throws very technical issues at the courts, where judges are ill-equipped to grasp the arguments' concepts or validity.  This damaging delegation was approved under the banner of laws interpreted and enforced by unelected officials.  Likewise, with Chevron, un-elected judges will be calling the shots. Still, they are not educated or equipped with the technical or scientific knowledge the decisions may require and cannot sort out the BS from the actual situation.
